Nope, 3 dogs and six cats here, the cats personalities are just as big as the dogs. Dogs are more in your face and predictable imo.

Ericaceae · 26/11/2019 23:05

Nah, I've lived with cats all my life and they're complex, clever wee creatures. Can take longer to get to know one compared to a dog right enough.

Celebelly · 26/11/2019 23:06

I think you get much more back from dogs. I have both but my relationship with my dog feels much more like a two-way thing and it's more rewarding for me personally. I enjoy her a lot more than I enjoy the cats, possibly because we can do a lot more together. But this will just end up as dog people v cat people Grin

Ginkypig · 26/11/2019 23:09

No they must have simpler personalities that are easier to read than a cats.

Iv never met two cats that are the same even from the same litter and that is also true of dogs but in a different way

Obviously that is my opinion based on my own experiences from the very small amount of the populations of animals Iv met or lived with and others may well disagree!

sweetkitty · 26/11/2019 23:12

Dogs just adore you, they just follow you around all day being your best friend loving you and wanting to be with you.

Cats are more complex, they know they would be perfectly fine without you, they honour you with their presence, if they want affection you are so pleased and they know it. They have us well trained with dogs it’s the other way around.

ClientListQueen · 26/11/2019 23:14

@sweetkitty my cat is the opposite! He follows me around gazing at me, blinking madly. When I come home he runs to the door and throws himself at me. I got a defective one Grin

Stuckinarut81 · 26/11/2019 23:15

Cats are arseholes.

Dogs are ace.

Bluerussian · 26/11/2019 23:17

You can't compare them, they are totally different. To make a comparison it has to be like to like, eg a dachsund and a golden retriever.

Cats are all different, I've had a few and no two were alike. Some were very funny, intuitive, affectionate, even kind. Others very independent, wanting everything on their terms. When they play they are individual. They are good company and soothing, especially as they get older and do less - but terribly amusing when young.

Dogs have similar tendencies to each other, are more obedient and respond to instructions. Lovely to take out too.

Ideally I would have one of each, if you get them together young they generally get on.

Chocmallows · 26/11/2019 23:18

My cat owns me, has me firmly under her paw. It's possibly the same for dog owners, but on the basis that you are saying cats lack character I think YABU.

Thehagonthehill · 26/11/2019 23:18

Having a dog is like having a permant toddler. They are needy.
I prefer an independent cat.How can you say that cats, who rule the roost in most homes have less 'personality'.

ClientListQueen · 26/11/2019 23:18

This is how mine spends his whole life

Sotoes · 26/11/2019 23:20

I've had plenty of both. The dogs were all eager to please and similar. The cats all had very different personalities.

MonstranceClock · 26/11/2019 23:20

Dogs are needy and annoying. Cats are intelligent and house mates rather than something to have to look after.

dontalltalkatonce · 26/11/2019 23:25

We have one dog and two cats, the cats definitely have more personality, no bow wow about it!

altiara · 26/11/2019 23:29

My cat was a pet, but my dog is family. Well cat was family too but aloof and mean, whereas dog is in the gang. Wouldn’t say dog had a bigger personality though, we’re just not scared of him Grin

Twofurrycatsagain · 26/11/2019 23:29

I've read the op to the cat. He disagrees

Mermaidoutofwater · 26/11/2019 23:33

It totally depends on the animal and the way you are with them. I’ve had two cats with very definite personalities but they have been doted on from kittenhood. I have a golden retriever now with a HUGE personality but she’s quite intelligent and we spend a lot of time together so she’s probably developed that way.

UnaCorda · 26/11/2019 23:37

My cat exhibits lots of different moods, makes a big range of sounds and communicates quite effectively.

BBInGinDrinking · 26/11/2019 23:39

We are cat people and dog people equally. They can both have big personalities in our experience.

YABU.

Elieza · 26/11/2019 23:40

Depends on the animal. I’ve had thick dogs and affectionate funny cats that behaved more like dogs! My horse had some personality too. Smart as anything. Sneaky. Funny. I’d swear he was a person in a previous life.

UsedtobeFeckless · 26/11/2019 23:50

I had dogs growing up at home and cats as an adult - to be honest the dogs were lovely, aimiable souls but the various cats - six so far - are light years ahead in the personality stakes. They are really affectionate too! People who think cats are cold are just wrong! Grin

pigsDOfly · 26/11/2019 23:51

My dog doesn't follow me around. She's actually really independent.

She grew up with my two cats though, and I do wonder if they taught her how to be a cat as everything seems to be on her terms.

I think the size of personality depends entirely on the animal. I've had cats with huge personalities and a very strong idea of fun. And when my DCs were young we had a gorgeous long haired hamster with a very big personality.

I've only ever had one dog so only have her to go on and if I'm honest, as much as I love her, I would never describe her as having a big personality.

scaryteacher · 26/11/2019 23:51

My cats think you don't know what you are talking about OP.

FlashesOfRage · 27/11/2019 00:02

My cat has such a big personality that all of my neighbors ask after him if they haven’t seen him about. Even the ones whose dog he chases 😂

He is like our child, (we’re infertile so please no one say anything mean about that!).
He follows us everywhere (including on walks sometimes). He has to be in the same room as one of us and is always waiting at the door when we get home.

He always sleeps lying against our legs at night and wakes us up purring for cuddles in the morning.

He’s also properly clawed loads of our house guests who didn’t take our advice not to hassle him lol

toffeeapplesgalore · 27/11/2019 00:07

Cats are amazing! I've had cats all my life and love them to bits. We have dogs also but tbh I find them very needy and annoying. I love how the dog shows so much love but it's gets overwhelming and annoying as it's constant! My cats are very funny and extremely loving but are not needy like the dogs.
