To not put the heating on for the cleaner?

It's 13 degrees today and feels very mild. I work from home and I'm perfectly comfortable. I don't like being too hot and we only put the heating on if it drops below 16 in the house. It's about 18 currently.

Anyway, just had an arsey message from the cleaning company saying my cleaner has complained about the cold and that all clients must ensure their houses are heated to at least 22 degrees whilst the cleaners are there.

AIBU to think this is ridiculous? I'm in the bloody house myself! Surely if I'm comfortable sitting at my desk, the cleaner (who is being active) should be able to cope?

Fuck me - 22 degrees. Bikini weather!

diddl · 26/11/2019 13:12

"So to have the heating on at 22 degrees for the cleaner would mean I'd have to sit at my desk sweltering with the window open for hours."

That's not her fault though, is it?

So because you don't want to be too hot, she must be too cold!

juneybean · 26/11/2019 13:12

Maybe she should move more if she's cold?

dottiedodah · 26/11/2019 13:12

If she doesnt speak any English ,the maybe from a hot country recently ? Will feel cold as not used to our chilly climate?

Notwiththeseknees · 26/11/2019 13:14

I would be googling for another cleaning company personally.....

Aderyn19 · 26/11/2019 13:14

You can't move from a hot country and then complain about being cold or expect everyone else to boil so that you feel comfortable.

Babybel90 · 26/11/2019 13:15

I think 21 would be reasonable but I wouldn’t expect her to complain unless it went under 18, she should bring a jumper with her if she feels the cold.

Notwiththeseknees · 26/11/2019 13:15

But before you do, try greeting her at the door next week with a massive bobble hat & scarf :D

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 26/11/2019 13:16

Get your radiator valve fixed? If you want someone to work for you at least compromise and have the house a little warmer it’s really not difficult. I doubt you’d want to work in an environment you felt was cold & the excuse from your employer was “my radiator valve is broke I’d be too hot soooo you must be cold”

Megan2018 · 26/11/2019 13:16

We have our house downstairs at 22/23, as we both run cold (upstairs cooler) but we have a very energy efficient house that holds heat so the heating isn’t on that much to achieve it.
I think your house sounds freezing but a requirement to heat to 22 seems OTT too, I think 18-20 is average.

Drum2018 · 26/11/2019 13:16

YANBU. 22 degrees is nuts.

diddl · 26/11/2019 13:17

" expect everyone else to boil so that you feel comfortable."

But if Op fixed her radiator, they could both be comfortable!

Aderyn19 · 26/11/2019 13:20

At 22 degrees the OP would be opening her windows to let out the excess heat.

CatUnderTheStairs · 26/11/2019 13:22

Where's she from - if she's from somewhere more tropical this could all be freezing for her.

Ginseng1 · 26/11/2019 13:23

Think it's really cheeky to ask to heat houses to 22 for someone doing physical work. Maybe if had a newborn baby in the house but even still that's above the recommended! I'd give them a ring - after 10 years if they want to keep your business they'll listen.

DarlingNikita · 26/11/2019 13:24

Well, 13 degrees to me is a bit chilly and I'd certainly have some warm layers on (I work at home, largely sitting still, by a somewhat draughty window!) but 22 seems excessive and the 'rule' that all clients must ensure their houses are heated to at least 22 degrees is just laughable.

I'd politely enquire after the legality of this 'rule' of theirs.

Bluerussian · 26/11/2019 13:24

I don't think it would hurt to put the heating up for the period in which your cleaner is there.

It is fairly mild at the moment and I am someone who feels the cold very much, however the comfort of employees is very important and if they are cold, they are cold and deserve to be warm.

crosspelican · 26/11/2019 13:26

22 degrees is ridiculous and i'm ALL about having the heating on. I work from home too and right now it's 19 degrees in my living room. The heating was on earlier. I like it to be 20 in the evenings though, but we also have a couple of fancy cashmere blankets on the sofa for if we're cold watching a movie at night.

18 is a TINY bit cold. 19 during the day is about right.

SayOohLaLa · 26/11/2019 13:26

Ask the company where it states that all homes / premises must be heated to 22 degrees, in your contract. They can buy their cleaners a company branded fleece each can't they?

NamedyChangedy · 26/11/2019 13:28

She's within her rights to ask (she was perhaps more polite than the email you received), but you're also within your rights to get a new cleaner. I run hot so that wouldn't be workable for me, especially if I was working in the house at the same time. Hiring a cleaner is supposed to make your life easier.

Ayemama · 26/11/2019 13:29

Where is she from? She's maybe used to warmer weather and can't stand the cold.
Our house is normally
Around 20ish and that's perfect for us but 16/17 would be too cold even while cleaning

Zaphodsotherhead · 26/11/2019 13:29

I'm a cold arse, I feel the cold horribly and am currently sitting in front of a roaring fire wearing three fleeces.

But. 22 degrees is fine if you are sitting still; it's perfectly pleasant. If you are pushing a hoover, dusting, making beds etc, it's far too warm. Even I have to take a layer off when I hoover!

I think they may have taken their temperature guidelines from office working. Maybe ask them what they think is reasonable as a compromise?

StripeyDeckchair · 26/11/2019 13:30

22 is way to high. Mines only 20 for the evening when I'm lounging around watching TV
18 max and if shes woking that should be too hot - it would be for me.

ANiceLuxury · 26/11/2019 13:30

My houses is about 25 degrees during the day and 20 at night.

Id be freezing my tits off if it was any lower

Majorcollywobble · 26/11/2019 13:31

Cricket ? My cleaning lady would melt in that sort of temperature! Get another cleaning firm .
