Sister-in-law is getting a french bulldog puppy and am feeling very judgemental about it!

From all I’ve read, this breed is riddled with health problems. And the mothers can’t give birth, they have to have c-sections.

I think my sister-in-law is being superficial to get such a breed. I think she likes them because celebrities have them.

I’m being a judgey cow, aren’t I? But who would get such a breed? It must be a vanity thing, right?

I hate the fact that there are thousands of dogs looking for homes and yet people breed dogs to make money for them and people ignore those dogs in desperate need of hones and buy from breeders and puppy farms.
I hate it too but I understand it in a way. We have 4 children under 12 (one that has bad asthma) and everyone pointing us to rescues have dogs from rescue centres that theyve had huge problems with, dogs that are out of control, nervy and seemingly untrainable (none of the people recognise it but looking at other people who have dogs because a friend's dog had a puppy or they bought from a breeder it's so visible!!!) . Rescue centres seem to be made up of huskies, Rottweilers and terriers. We're at the point it seems unattainable to just get a kid friendly, not so allergenic dog.

I really like the French Bulldog but am disgusted by the way that they are breed and the inherent health problems that they as a breed generally suffer from. This is not to say that every FBD will have an issue but more often than not they will. So the FBD is off the list for us as we cant/wont support the people that make money from perpetuating this cruelty.

A lot of people seem to be taken by 'didn't that talentless no-nothing on the TV that's famous for no reason have one of these? Cool, i must get me one' and for my mind those people should never adopt a canine. I say adopt as that is what a true canine lover would do but as a lot of these types of people treat a canine as a fashion accessory, buy is probably a better word...

Until the whole procedure is policed from start to finish, i.e. breeders must be licenced and monitored, owners must be licenced (and possibly monitored) and everything in between is watched, there are always going to be issues.

We as a family adopted a Huntaway (New Zealand Sheepdog). Apart from the fact that i was raised on a NZ hill country farm and it just wanted one back in my life it had as much to do with their health as anything. They are breed more for what they do than how they look so the issue with breeding too close to the bloodline to achieve a certain look is not an issue on the whole. Whilst it is a breed of dog its a bit of a mongrel breed (not recognised by the UK Kennel Club.... which is probably its saving grace..)

No canine is without potentially health issues, just like people, but with a mongrel you might have more luck

CheekyFuckerHQ · 28/11/2019 07:28

@frostedviolets like I said, all my dogs are rescued. I wouldn’t have chosen a Merle Collie otherwise, I am well aware of the issues with Merle. For the record I wouldn’t have an unneutered dog either.

Ferret27 · 28/11/2019 07:34

Call her out on it... I had a Family that bought a Rhodesian Ridgeback ..kept it in the kitchen and never took it for walks ...to avoid family rifts we did not call rspca and regret it ....people should have to have a licence to own dogs...
we did take him out when visiting and told them constantly to Re home him.... but he was selfishly kept until put down. because he nipped a child that pulled his tail in that recent heatwave🙁

Whenever you see a 'fatty' shout out, you might get a hole lot of snogs before it will actually be lincoln

You never wonder if your pugs might actually enjoy a longer walk if they could actually do it?!

There's a woman I meet on walks who has three pugs. Two drag their corpulent little bodies around, gasping for breath; the third can't even do that - he is so massively obese that he has to sit in state in one of theses doggy pushchairs and be pushed round the park. That poor dog is like Jabba the Hutt!

We've chatted - she seems a nice enough person be totally lacking in awareness of what she is doing to her dogs.

NO dog benefits from being overweight - but for brachycephalic breeds it is sentencing them to a lifetime of painful heart and breathing problems, and an early and unpleasant death.

Please don't let your dog get fat.

frostedviolets · 28/11/2019 11:37

I don't see the problem as long as it has a loving caring home !!!

But it's suffering...?
Caring home or not that is a problem no?

adaline · 28/11/2019 11:37

Ffs that is the point- not all dogs are the same. Frenchies and pugs shouldn't be walking miles a day. Part of owning the breed is knowing their limitations.

Of course all dogs should be able to walk several miles per day - what a nonsense statement!

Zaphodsotherhead · 28/11/2019 11:40

The trouble is that dogs are like children. Everyone thinks they are doing their best for their dog (or child) when it might be obvious to everyone else that their little darling is overweight, badly socialised and completely out of control.

adaline · 28/11/2019 11:41

I don't see the problem as long as it has a loving caring home !!!

So as long as it's loved, it doesn't matter that it can't breathe properly?

MurrayTheMonk · 28/11/2019 11:45

YANBU. DD's have been nagging me for a bull dog or a pug for years. We got two Jack Russells instead.

Auberjean · 28/11/2019 12:08

Zaph that's so true.

DeadButDelicious · 28/11/2019 12:16

I've always had a soft spot for pugs. I worked in rescue many moons ago and was put in charge of about a dozen pugs and Pekingese that had been rescued from
a hoarder and I just fell in love with the breed. When it came time that I could have a dog of my own I knew I wanted a rescue pug. I couldn't in good conscience buy a puppy but offering a home to one in need? That I could do.

Our first, Lola, who we adopted at a year old, developed necrotising meningoencephalitis when she was about to turn 4. Thankfully we had insurance. It cost verging on £10,000 to diagnose and treat her for a year. She had a nasty relapse and the damage was just too great and we had to let her go. My heart broke. It was 18 long months before I could countenance getting another dog but when I saw my current rescue pug I had to give her a home, she was 3 when we adopted her, about to turn 4 and was an ex breeding bitch. She has since been spayed (she was on the verge of developing pyo so it was done days after we got her) and is a very happy 5 year old. The only issue we've had is an eye ulcer that responded very well to treatment and was resolved in less than a week. We love her and wouldn't be without her.

I guess the point to my looooong ramble is this. Pugs, frenchies, bulldogs etc are high needs dogs and when something goes wrong it gets expensive. Quick. This is why so many end up in rescue.

I would urge anyone who wants a brachy breed to do their research so they understand what they are taking on and to get a rescue rather than a puppy that just continues to fuel the demand for these dogs.

They aren't easy dogs, they can't be left for hours on end, they don't cope well in hot weather and I haven't met a frenchie yet that hasn't needed some sort of BOAS surgery. Insurance (good insurance with lifetime cover) is an absolute necessity with these kinds of dogs.

LolaLovett · 28/11/2019 12:18

You are being judgy. Most breeds have health issues due to their breeding these days. But I know loads of people with FBDogs which are lovely healthy family pets. As long as you look after and commit to your dog for life, it doesn’t matter what you get. I do get fed up with people preaching about only getting rescue dogs, so holier than thou.

DeadButDelicious · 28/11/2019 12:21

I should add that I work really hard at keeping my Pug at a good weight and make sure she gets plenty of exercise. She can easily walk 3 miles a day. Unless it's the height of summer. Then it's short walks morning and night.

adaline · 28/11/2019 12:24

As long as you look after and commit to your dog for life, it doesn’t matter what you get.

So it doesn't matter if your dog is so poorly bred it needs surgery to breathe properly, so long as it's looked after? It doesn't matter that it can't run or chase or go out in warm weather so long as it's loved?

I don't care if I'm called judgemental - people shouldn't be encouraging the popularity of poorly bred pets. That doesn't just apply to pugs or whatever either - people should do their research and go via decent breeders who look after their animals and care about the overall health of the breed.

I'm sure there are good breeders of bulldogs and pugs - but the vast majority of people don't use them.

Radarrooney · 28/11/2019 12:33

First off why is it any of your business what you SIL does dlid.she ask you to ask you to pay for it ? And to proudpeacock oh God no! !the horror don't give a kid a puppy for Christmas why don't you run right over and tell them there is no santa .I have owned French bulldogs for 17 years and I'm sure most of you know they aren't really from France in fact the breed was developed in England it's an English dog part terrier part bulldog English bulldog go figure leave it to the Brits Yes I will never own another breed of dog I my husband and I have rescued countless countless dogs I rescued a pony I found a pony on the side of the road and a rescue to pony I love the personality of the French bulldog it's a perfect dog for me It is a true companion it wants to be with you every minute It doesn't want to go hiking biking triking It just wants to love you warts and all it's kind of like my opinion is guns don't kill people people kill people with guns let's educate and go after these breeders that are breeding subpar quality dogs as far as of course I'm anti-puppy mill and the French bulldog can breathe naturally it is harder for them The breeders wanted I mean they want to know that they're going to get a puppie so they are artificially inseminat them and for the health of the puppy and the health of the mother that's why they do the cesareans there I've never had health problems with my French bulldogs and by the way golden retrievers had the highest incident of cancer than any breed of dog Yes there are a lot of dogs that need to be rescued however these puppies need a home too I'm tired of being judged because of my breed of dog I adore mine I have a black female French bulldog and I bought her the most hideous bougie pink pearls and a makeover in them everyday because if you're going to think I'm bougie I'm going to make the dog look pushy I like it's personality and quite frankly it's not our place to judge for any reason if somebody does my dog as an accessory that is why there are dogs in the pound and then the shelters and did you know that the highest incident of dog breed in the shelter is the Labrador retriever or part Labrador retriever because they remain puppies for 3 years and people don't know too that is where I think we need to pay attention people are getting dogs that are not the appropriate breed they didn't or they and it doesn't work out because not every dog is for every person And then the dogs in the shelter was shame on the person that got it and put it there not shame on me because I did my research and I know what kind of dog I want and not every dog again I'll say it again not every dog is for every person but why do we judge the center job set my job to judge you because you have a rescue and it's not your job to judge me because I love my French bulldog I agree they're being overbread and they're these rare colors that they're bringing back Ashley bread out of the Frenchie because more health problems they're not recognized here in the United States for the AKC and it pisses me off when I see them advertise and they're extremely expensive and I know these people are buying a health problem and yes that pisses me off people but I know several breeders whose soul purpose for breathing is to breathe the health problems out of the Frenchie so the dogs can have a wonderful life and they don't all have health problem I mean they don't all have health problems and they don't all have breathing problems If your sister couldn't be out in the sun would you ask your mom what you have her for no when you're judging somebody And don't know the whole situation you can be missing a great opportunity frenchies are kind and they're funny and they're silly and they love you to death and when my husband died that was exactly what I needed so I didn't buy as a fashion accessory I stumble on my first Frenchie so think about it before you judge the next French bulldog owner that you see maybe say hello the owner talk to him Frenchie people are always happy to talk to you about their dog all of them Do you want to keep peace in your family don't judge your sister-in-law you put your brother in a bad situation when you do that supporter lover helper their job here on Earth not just here people down but to lift them up peace love and French bulldogs

Grimbles · 28/11/2019 12:42

Umm.

Paragraphs might help.

DogAndCatPerson · 28/11/2019 13:01

What in holy hell was that ramble?

Labs and lab x are also a high % of the dogs in rescue because they are the most popular dog breed in the UK and have been for decades. Yes, they have a long adolescence (like most large breeds) but it is also a basic common sense numbers game, the more of a certain type of dog in the general population, the more you’ll see in the rescue population. The numbers of Labs & lab x in rescue aren’t disproportionate to the numbers in ownership in the general population.

Dogs generally are like people. Some die very young from weird genetic problems, cancers, etc. and some, like my soon to be 15 year old goldie defy all the odds and soldier on.

Flatcoated retrievers are known to suffer from hystiocytic carcinoma and many don’t make it to much beyond 9 years. I’ve had a flatty who died at 9 from that terrible disease and I’ve had another succumb to terminal renal failure shortly after his second birthday. I’ve also had one who made 15 and another who lived to be 17, although he was very deaf and his eyes weren’t too good at the end.

I totally agree that dogs should never be bred for looks. As I said earlier, my boys are genuine working dogs but certainly one or two that I’ve had would have failed the KC rules! One of my boys had odd eyes p, one dark brown and the other amber - we nicknamed him David Bowie.

My youngest flattie is a stunning looking dog. He’s tall and slim and his coat glows (salmon oil is great for skin and fur if you’re wondering). I’ve been asked whether I intend showing him! Not on your life! He’s not a prancing poodle.

Until the KC stop this rubbish of breeding dogs for looks, the health problems of flat faced dogs, the heart problems of Cavalier King Charles, the hip problems in all the big breeds will go on. In the litter that Blake was from, two of the pups were yellow (golden retriever colour). His mum was a liver (Brown) and his dad, like him, jet black. The two yellows have exactly the same parents but can’t be ‘registered’ because KC don’t ‘recognise’ yellow flatcoats! What rubbish!

YOLO1975 · 28/11/2019 15:07

😂😂😂😂 it’s nobody else’s business what anyone else does. As long as it’s not hurting you directly then you need to keep your opinions to yourself ! I’m pretty sure if the boot was on the other foot you would be saying exactly the same ! Any dog can have health issues but as long as it’s come from a reputable breeder , been fully checked out at the vets , has had all its vaccinations & a loving home what is the problem .. we can’t wait to collect our Frenchie tomorrow .. & no it’s not for vanity purposes it’s because we know we can give him a very loving home. My friend who’s dog had the pups has made sure each one goes to someone she knows so they can stay in contact with the mum .. x

Ilovesunshine22 · 28/11/2019 15:19

Judgemental yes! Lots of breeds have health problems for example German shepherds have lots of health problems but are still very popular and used in the police force despite the fact they will be in severe pain with there back legs and spines as most of them get older. Not all French bulldogs have health problems just like not all German shepherds and other breeds that have notorious health problems will suffer so you can't say it so matter of fact like ALL french bulldogs will have health problems because that is just not true! it confuses me why no one says about other breeds of dogs to stop being breed that have been popular for decades. Yes celebrities have made it seem like people are getting them for a fashion accessorie just like other small breeds have done over the years like, the andrex puppy aka Labrador, chi's , also datchhounds but you can not judge everyone on this planet to be one of those vein people because that just isn't fair. I researched and researched the hell out of the breed before getting ours and I'm so glad we did! Any one who has or met a French bulldog will understand they have the best little personalities that you fall in love with its not there looks, they are brilliant with children, loving, loyal and adapt to any family. So please don't judge people for trying to be fashionable because for alot of us it's not about that like any dog they become a huge part of the family and mine is very very loved.

CripsSandwiches · 28/11/2019 15:21

YANBU I don't mind judging people for animal cruelty. I knew a woman who got a bloody sheep dog in a 2 bed city flat when she had a full time job. Then had a baby 2 years later and had to get rid of it. Selfish behaviour.
