Immigration comment from colleague, AIBU

Name changed.

Myself and a couple of colleagues were talking about the upcoming general election, just about the debates that were on television last week.
Colleague stated she was voting conservatives because she wants brexit (fair enough) but then went on to say it's because of immigration and doesn't want anymore people coming in to the UK because we're a 'small island' and can't home any more people, she went on to say refugees are fine but that's it, then said 'I'm not racist' but just my opinion.

Now my grandparents were immigrants and I wouldn't be here without them coming from Asia, I was a bit offended by her comments.

Aibu?

What you propose would have the effect of leaving just the unskilled jobs for native born people there will always be unskilled British people, they don’t suddenly decide to become lawyers when they struggle to get a job due to competition.
Why would we as a country choose to bring in more unskilled workers who will need additional propping up from the state.

This flooded island is just going to disapear in a few decades so whats the point discussing immigration. Who would want to move here now? Rain, racists, reccession. Leave brits to their own shite

BrainAcheRemedy · 28/11/2019 08:15

Thank you for your well considered and evidenced contribution, Justme9 Hmm.

YABU. She is entitled to her opinion and being offensive isn't a crime.

How is it racist to want to limit immigration? Most immigrants are white and from the EU.

Also, loads of countries (even non-white/western ones) have strict immigration policies. Japan has the one of the strictest immigration policies in the world but nobody calls them racist. They are almost completely homogenous. Saudi Arabia likewise. Do you consider the Japanese and Arab states racists?

*If agricultural labour prices go up, so will food prices - its basic supply and demand.
Pay cabbage pickers 20% more Cabbages in the shop cost more

It's either paying more for food (to be picked by the millions of unemployed/part time workers already here) or pay higher taxes to subsidise ever increasing tax credits and housing benefits and all the associated benefits to low paid immigrants workers who are exploited by big business not wanting to pay a decent wage and would rather have UK tax payers subsidise their profits.

AllergicToAMop · 28/11/2019 11:07

I personally don't mind paying bit more if wages go up.
General public on the other hand...
I was screamed at by more people than you would believe when we upped our prices whole 10p so staff's wages could keep up with living wage...
How the fuck dare we...

This thread has gotten very racist in tone. I cannot understand why so much anti-British racist comments are being allowed to be left up.

I won’t repeat them but they are horrible and are perpetuating the myth that only immigrants work in low paid agriculture, factory and health care jobs. A quick google of the U.K. ONS can tell you that British workers are still the vast majority of workers in those sectors.

As a French person, I am shocked that a U.K. website is allowing racism against its own nationality to stand.

Most MN people could never leave the UK. Meanwhile, in the world, here's what we do. We migrate, economically to places who need us. We have great education and Healthcare (which costs money) we adopt the values of our host and get on with life. I have been non resident in the UK for many years but can't get the NHS to bill me for holiday treatment, they don't have the staff. In Poole, they say so many HIV and maternity cases slip through because they don't have the admin staff to bill their governments. I have gold star insurance and try to pay because I will get it back but they always ask me to use a UK address to save the admin. I never do so end up out of pocket as they are unable to bill. I rarely used the NHS but out of UK for 20 years so occasional need.

Shit pay is due to the UK Government Laws
which will get worse after Brexit look at the UK for evidence

ther IS a massive problem with the EU posted workers scheme
but Brexit has nadgered improving it

The UK is not crowded
many areas are underpopulated

let them in and let them work
is not my idea
but its the right one

BrainAcheRemedy · 03/12/2019 19:07

So all those people who want to come here want to go and live in the underpopulated areas? Rightyho. Not going to happen. There are no jobs in underpopulated areas. In any event, we need to protect our environment in the face of climate change.

Unlimited immigration is a very, very bad idea only supported by those rich enough not to have to compete for housing and jobs (and the privileged half of the Labour Party, which needs the votes).

Having said that, I agree with you that poor pay and working conditions is down to the government, but it is enabled by a constant supply of cheap labour. As for whether Brexit will make it better or worse, who really knows, but I don’t blame the working classes for taking a risk that it might improve things for them.
