Immigration comment from colleague, AIBU

Myself and a couple of colleagues were talking about the upcoming general election, just about the debates that were on television last week.
Colleague stated she was voting conservatives because she wants brexit (fair enough) but then went on to say it's because of immigration and doesn't want anymore people coming in to the UK because we're a 'small island' and can't home any more people, she went on to say refugees are fine but that's it, then said 'I'm not racist' but just my opinion.

Now my grandparents were immigrants and I wouldn't be here without them coming from Asia, I was a bit offended by her comments.

Do the migrants themselves not need healthcare and services? Perhaps if we hadn't had so much immigration recently we wouldn't need so many staff in the NHS etc.

What a shame we haven't trained the people already here to do these jobs and scrapped the bursaries and fees.

Immigrants aren’t just work horses they rightly build lives, need homes, need to use the nhs, the school system- all legal all fair all over stretched !!!!

Veg picking etc is - and has always been - seasonal work

since the EU, the young chaps come over here, work their backsides off, live in caravans and save every penny they can

at the end of the season they go back south and rest

they do not have kids here
they do not retire here
they do not use schools
they do not use the NHS

all the stats bear that out

if they lose free movement, they will stay and claim benefits

Immigrants are just people: and like all people some get married some don’t, some commit crime some don’t, some have children some don’t, some become high flyers some become benefit scrounges ...they aren’t all single nurses single handily saving the nhs- a points system is fair!

I don’t think a non skilled migrant who doesn’t earn enough to pay income tax is warrant of a work visa. Is it for me to list out a whole visa program = no. Is it for you outline a whole social care program for this vastly growing population of the Uk for the next 20-40 years?!

Nope. We have encouraged young people here to strive for more. Go up to your nearest 2 year old and ask them if they'd get a job right now picking Brussels sprouts in a cold wet field, for double what a foreign worker will do it for. And they'll say "No - I'm better than that"

Shes entitled to her opinion. It doesnt mean shes right but it doesnt make her racist either.

To those saying she's entitled to her opinion - where do you draw the line then? What if someone's opinions cause harm to others? For example there was a recent story that was reported quite widely in the media of an NHS consultant who had been living and working in the UK for decades, and he was now being told by some patients they wanted their operation to be done by a "white" doctor and not to be treated by him.

I honestly think this country should close the borders and only allow in educated individuals or ones with a trade like Australia

I suspect many people do. The poor in their proper place, doing the manual jobs for shit pay.

Yanbu like someone else said, brexit/johnson/trump are fueling and normalising racism and its horrible to watch. The fact that people are more angry at you having a moral stance on this than a person being racist just shows how messed up this country has got. It's really depressing tbh

I voted Brexit and so did everyone I know for one reason only. IMMIGRATION. Less Europeans just walking in to our ISLAND.
