To ask what you think is worth spending a bit extra on?

And what you think isn’t?
Can be anything - food, clothes, holidays etc etc?

For example, I’ve just bought some socks that are a cashmere blend and wonder how I could now ever go back to boring old cotton.
Likewise, I usually spend a bit more on coffee for good quality. But some food items such as tinned pulses - I don’t think it matters buying cheap.

What items do you spend a little more on because you think they’re worth it? And which do you buy the cheapest of because you can’t notice any difference?

Thanks for taking part in a mundane thread Smile

Sofas.

Auberjean · 26/11/2019 08:46

. -After seeing several accidents and knowing someone who work in motor insurance litigation I would never buy a car that isn’t a merc/bmw/jag etc. It’s a death wish-

Last time I bought a car, Ford Focus was reviewed as one of the safest, because of the roll bars.

Bed linen
Hummus
Tomatoes
Foundation
Garden furniture

Biggobyboo · 26/11/2019 09:06

Make up and skincare
Business class on flights - I won’t go longhaul if I can’t go business class!
Hotels - must be 4 star, preferably 5.
Clothes - I like Hobbs etc but only buy when there’s 20% off or on in the sale.
Coffee

I buy own brand bleach and Lidl laundry pods and dishwasher tablets.

Biggobyboo · 26/11/2019 09:06

First class trains - I have a HM Forces railcard so save a third! When booking in advance they are savings to be had!

Moominfan · 26/11/2019 09:13

You do realise that some poor goats were tortured for your cashmere? Wow. So selfish.

This is news to me 🤷🏾‍♀️

FloraGreysteel · 26/11/2019 09:23

Tech, meat/cheese/eggs, makeup, clothes, bedding and gyms. Shit gyms are a disincentive - if you're going to sign up for one, make it somewhere you actively want to go.

FloraGreysteel · 26/11/2019 09:24

@ethelfleda OMG and coffee!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/11/2019 09:27

Coffee.

Holidays - I only go to 5 star hotels, it's a treat.

Foundation.

Shoes and boots. Cheap ones fall apart so quickly as I do a lot of walking. (I don't own a car)

Hahahaha. This is a hilarious comment. I am definitely on a death wish then for driving my 11 year old 207. I had better rush out to get an FPace right now Hmm

I completely agree with your comment on diamonds. My wedding and engagement rings are both moissanite. I wouldn’t allow DH to buy diamonds.

I like the idea of good time flights..Wink
I spend my money on decent yoghurt and nice jam!

Me neither, it's a bloody industry that lies (even more than most big business) to support the prices. Diamonds are actually quite common, there's no rarity. DeBeers set the price (three months salary) in an advertising campaign while using near slave labour to extract the stones with no environmental concern at all. Hideous business.

I would like to add bedding to the list. The gulf between supermarket poly/cotton blend and 400 thread count long staple cotton is vast and deep. Nice bedding makes your bed feel 5* hotel-ish!

shearwater · 26/11/2019 14:32

I was really disappointed with high thread count Egyptian cotton bed linen. It was so cold and slippery- ok for summer I guess, but I prefer brushed cotton bed linen for most of the year. Cosy.

Anyway my answer is anything, but only if I can't get it at Aldi.

Jeleste · 26/11/2019 14:36

Jeans! I have name brand jeans that ive worn for over 10 years. My weight went up and down 2 stone in that time.
All my cheap jeans stretched out and look really worn and dont have a shape anymore. The expensive once stretched out and bounced back and still look new!
Never buying cheap ones again.

serenajayne1047 · 26/11/2019 14:38

Will always buy more expensive toys so they're better quality. Totally worth it. Would rather buy a good quality £50 doll, not a £10 piece of crap.

DarlingNikita · 26/11/2019 17:28

Can't think of much apart from high-welfare meat, which I buy really rarely anyway as we mostly eat meat-free.

Oh, and I suppose Apple computer/iPad as I just find them easier and more intuitive to use.

My favourite jeans are from Uniqlo and cost about £30 a go. And I really can't bear the idea of spending £1.40 on something like a tin of chickpeas when a corner shop has them for 49p.

Lilyflower1 · 26/11/2019 17:36

Coffee
Some Champagne sometimes such as the Bolly/Taittinger/Heidseck we had when DD was married (otherwise will swill cheap Champagne to celebrate, say, Saturday)
Lampshades
Rugs
Sofas
Chocolate
Jewellery (Have never worn anything not genuine)
Haircuts
Lighting
Bedding
Antiques
Antique Porcelain

I hasten to add I was very poor when I was young and pay for all this with my own earned money.

Lilyflower1 · 26/11/2019 17:43

Things I buy cheaply:-

Cars (Fords not Mercs)
Some clothes (keep fit so reasonably slim and wear with expensive bling and good haircut)
Value label for some food and cleaning products (Yellow sticker high end food)
Books (library & charity shop)
Bedding plants (Tesco's planted in proper pots)
Never waste money on me-stuff or pampering

Lilyflower1 · 26/11/2019 17:44

It occurs to me that I might be thinking I am spending a lot on something and another Mumsnetter would laugh me out of court for being a cheapskate.

FastLane46 · 26/11/2019 17:46

Tyres. I'll never understand why anyone would choose cheap tyres 😐

Anything else I'll buy cheaply lol

easyandy101 · 26/11/2019 17:47

Safety equipment
Food

milliefiori · 26/11/2019 17:47

Cashmere. I am amazed when I see acrylic sweaters on sale for £80, when for £100 you can get pure cashmere. Soft as a baby's skin and super warm. Washes well and looks new forever.

Computers. I despise Apple as a company but Macs last longer and never get viruses.

Foundation · 26/11/2019 17:59

Travel insurance

StarlightLady · 26/11/2019 18:04

I splash out on:

Nice matching lingerie.
Quality coffee.
Cocktails.

I go cheap on:

Fixed priced menus in restaurants.
Jeans.
Shop around for flight and hotel deals.
