www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/nov/22/question-time-80000-super-rich-earning-workers

This article is saying 1.6mil ppl are on 80k. How is that possible when a salary thread comes up on mumsnet, practically everyone claims to have a 100k plus salary?!!

@fromnowhere I have been wondering about this point as well. Any consultant, working via a Personal Service Company, in addition to other more traditional business owners will likely post relatively small "Salaries" but they may still earn quite large amounts each year. It would be good to understand whether the statistics quoted include or exclude these individuals.

I personally suspect that the figures are based purely on amounts earned via Salaries and taxed under PAYE. Many higher "earners" will not fall into this pool.

(I take the point from @BarbaraofSeville that there will also be other non-salaried workers who earn relatively low amounts as e.g. drivers. It would be equally valuable to know whether including this group would shift the 5% mark to a higher or lower annual income.)

@BaloneyInMySlacks I see that you have covered this point. It would seem that the HMRC figures do cover all income sources. I will try and remember that.

Agree with @GooseFeather

‘ The MN demographic is middle class in the main and women with more time on their hands to be on the internet than average. Therefore, there will be higher than 5% of the MN population who have a DH on >80k. Ditto private education.‘

I am not middle class. However, as. HOUSEHOLD we earn more than 80k, and I know 3 other close families who earn similar.

It is quite amusing that Corbyn classes the rich as those with about £500 more than an MP's salary. perhaps rich is always someone who earns more than you do.

Mumsnet is extremely London centric. That's where the big bucks are.
