This is sort of a potty training thread with an AIBU twist - I don't know if I am going about this the wrong way.

DS just turned 3 and it has been suggested by the nursery (in a nice way, we really like our nursery) that we start potty training. Most of the kids his age at nursery are potty trained. We attempted it a few months ago (almost a year) but it just wasn't working so aborted.

Now I really want to get it done and in some ways he seems ready - he is aware, verbal etc. And some times wants to sit on the potty but never when he actually wants to pee. He just copies us. The nursery suggested that he won't get there by himself and will need our guidance. Which of course we are here to give.

My DM seems to think we should do it now - and apparently both my DSis and I were already potty trained by his age and very easily so too.

The nursery on the other hand said we should expect lots of accidents and daily washes for a few weeks but he will eventually get it. Is it normal to take this long?

We have him in underpants and sweatpants so he can pull them down.

Now, we are one day on and he just doesn't seem to get it AT ALL. He literally goes as soon as we are sat on the sofa after I have taken him to the loo for an attempt. He gives no sign he wants to go and does nothing when I take him to sit on the potty (every 45mins or so). And then gets wet.

He does get annoyed when I take him now as I think he gets bored and doesn't seem to have made the connection. (We read books etc there)

Is this normal part of the process? AIBU to keep going? I would like to get it done but not to the detriment of his confidence obviously.
I keep hearing of children who get it immediately within a day, and they are much younger too...

I wouldn't take him every 45 mins.....ask him every 20 mins or so if he needs to go?

give him one of those fruit shoot drinks as they go straight through them and every 5 mins ask if he needs a wee, about 20mins after the drink put him on the loo

Repeat ALL weekend 🤣

Thanks @itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted I will try the fruit juice. I have a box somewhere.
I have been asking but just worried he will get too self conscious to go if I keep talking about it! I might be overthinking it though.

This is def my weekend sorted 😂
Nothing planned but loo trips at the moment. Thankfully DH is back home soon and he can be on loo duty for a while. I am already exhausted!
