It's a tight loop and "mottled" colour iyswim.
No pets, older children. No shoes but dh often forgets 😡
I love the look and feel of it but is it too impractical?

My parents’ wool carpet in their hall, stairs and landing has been destroyed by moths. They are a nightmare to get rid of. I would not buy a wool carpet for my own house

FamilyOfAliens · 23/11/2019 10:11

I used to work for the International Wool Secretariat, which owned the Woolmark and Woolblendmark trademarks and did all the quality control for products bearing the trademarks.

If you buy a carpet with one of these symbols it’s your guarantee that the carpet will have been mothproofed to the quality standards set by the owners of the trademark.

You can obviously buy wool carpets without the Woolmark but I wouldn’t.

We've got 100% wool loop on our stairs and landings. 3 story Victorian townhouse so 2 flights of stairs and 2 landings and was definitely expensive and we thought carefully. We loved the texture and didn't really want synthetic. It's been down 2 years and we still love it but we don't wear shoes upstairs and we don't have pets (I think sometimes with a loop claws can pull it?). No moths at all and I grew up in a house with 100% wool berber all over again no moths.

Howshelaughed · 23/11/2019 10:24

I've just replaced a wool carpet on my stairs & landing with a synthetic one. Wool was a nightmare. Any mark can't be scrubbed as it goes all fuzzy. It looked a bit grubby after a few months. I'm embarrassed to say I had no idea about moths but it's my lightbulb moment. I was always finding moths all over the house. Now I know why! I had a small bathroom flood & it went out to landing & the wool carpet shrunk! Hence it's been replaced. I feel I'm much more relaxed as not always worrying about marks getting on carpet.

Etinox · 23/11/2019 10:34

Is it very bad that I’m heartened by all the other moth hosts?
It’s cost us £££ over the years in failed eradication and repairing rugs and all the time I was blaming my poor housekeeping skills.
Blummin’ mil keeps asking if we’ve got rid of them yet as she eyes her precious rugs and thinks about decluttering No we haven’t and it stresses me out!

MrsMaiselsMuff · 23/11/2019 10:36

Just replacing my wool carpets with PP. They've worn well but they every spill (or spew - cat!) has marked so the colour is uneven.

Our fitter doesn't recommend nylon. Not sure why, as they were more expensive, possibly to do with cleaning. I'll ask.

wonkylegs · 23/11/2019 10:52

My in-laws have a mottled light brown wool carpet on their stairs and hall and it wasn't anywhere near new when I met DH 20yrs ago - it's still in good condition and even though my FIL comes in from running in his muddy shoes it comes up fine.
No problems with moths and all their carpets are 100% wool and ancient but again they live up north in the cold so maybe it depends where you live.

My Mum in S. wales has had real problems with carpet moths in the past 5years.

YouJustDoYou · 23/11/2019 10:56

We had to rip all ours put after they got totally and irrevocably infested with carpet moths. Never again.

AvenueQ · 23/11/2019 11:03

Every time I'm thinking right synthetic it has to be someone comes along and pulls me back to wool Grin

@AvenueQ
Where do you live? It does seem that London is especially moth prone and that does seem to be the main argument against wool.

AvenueQ · 23/11/2019 15:51

Not in London but in the Southwest

Ohyesiam · 23/11/2019 15:56

The only carpet in our house is will and on the stairs and landing.
It’s kind of porridge colour. We’ve j had it almost 20 years and I’ve found it’s very hard to clean, the bottom step is almost completely bald ( don’t now went just the bottom) and it never looks good, even when it’s just been hovered. Just very mildly tatty looking, except for the bottom stair which is hugely tatty looking.
I love natural fibres so I’m disappointed.

Ohyesiam · 23/11/2019 15:57

Sorry, almost 10 years! Not 20, but it’s never looked smart.

Span1elsRock · 23/11/2019 16:03

We've lived in our house for 21 years, have got 100% wool carpets in most rooms and have never had a moth.......... they're incredibly hard wearing and so much better for the environment than synthetic.

Most of our carpets are Westex.

daisypond · 23/11/2019 16:07

Our carpets were wrecked within six months. I’m in London. I just live with them now.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 23/11/2019 16:18

Are there moths and moths? Or will all moths eat carpet?

I'm in NI and we get moths in the house. The carpet shop was advising that wool wears better but this thread is scaring me.

funnelfanjo · 23/11/2019 16:25

I live in Yorkshire, and moths have ruined our nasty cheap synthetic stair carpet. I can only presume it’s the glue or hessian backing they’ve been munching. So avoiding wool doesn’t guarantee no moths.

If you’ve never had moths before, I wouldn't let it put you off. However, once you e got them I think it’s best to avoid in the future.

ILearnedItFromABook · 23/11/2019 17:22

NAMALT. (Not All Men Moths Are Like That.)

MoltoAgitato · 23/11/2019 17:26

We have 100% wool on stairs and landing. To be honest it’s not that hard wearing and needs replacing at about 7 years old.

VeryLittleOwl · 23/11/2019 17:40

I've got an 80% wool carpet on the stairs and upstairs in our holiday let. The carpet shop warned me that pure wool or high wool content carpets are more prone to pile reversal, where for no reason whatsoever the fibres in one section will decide to lie in the opposite direction to the rest and makes it look like there's a big wet patch. Hasn't happened to mine yet, but they were right about it being a lot harder to get stains out of as well (curses the guest who dropped a mug of tea on the floor in one of the bedrooms...). Other than that, it's held up well to 2 years of guests.

madcatladyforever · 23/11/2019 17:44

No wool for me. My 18 year old cat can poop in inappropriate places at times and I need to be able to aquavac it off easily.

MrsPerfect12 · 23/11/2019 17:55

I have put down a wool carpet in my hall and starts. I can never seem to hoover all the fluff off it. It's also suffering from reverse pile on the landing despite being hoovered every other day. I'm desperate to replace it and won't be buying another wool.

ChocolateOrangeIsAFruit · 23/11/2019 17:58

I would definitely buy wool

LatteLady · 23/11/2019 18:28

OP, it is not the moths but the grub that eat the wool... you won't know they are there until the holes appear. Unfortunately unlike jumpers and yarn stash you cannot stick a carpet in the freezer.

I know it feels amazing but I think you would spare yourself a lot of angst by buying a mix.

Quiettimeplease · 23/11/2019 18:47

We have it. It’s lovely.
