It's a tight loop and "mottled" colour iyswim.
No pets, older children. No shoes but dh often forgets 😡
I love the look and feel of it but is it too impractical?

Don't do it! We had an 80% wool carpet and the carpet moths destroyed it, despite every powder, spray and chemical we could get our hands on. The only way to fully eradicate was to remove the carpet. It was a lovely carpet and I'm still slightly bitter about it.

On the other hand, do they offer a guarantee about it being carpet moth free? Will they replace with non-wool if the horrors descend?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/11/2019 08:44

We need to replace the carpet throughout our whole house because of carpet moths. They started underneath furniture and have left large bare patches. We will not be replacing with wool.

Grafittiqueen · 23/11/2019 08:45

I'm never buying wool carpet again. Moths have absolutely wrecked ours.

AvenueQ · 23/11/2019 09:13

Classic aibu - I so want to be told I am not unreasonable 🤣

Sorry, another moth victim here!

flirtygirl · 23/11/2019 09:22

Moths depend where you live. I've had two wool mottled carpets a flat loop twist style over 16 years as one is still going strong in house u sold. Very easy to keep clean. No moths and I like the fact it's natural.

Also had them on stairs and landing. I think the first one would still be going string if builders had not trashed it at around 8 years old.

Hoppinggreen · 23/11/2019 09:24

We had 80/20 mix in the bedrooms and the moths are the bits under the beds we couldn’t immediately see.
Hd no idea moths were so common

DisplayPurposesOnly · 23/11/2019 09:25

Always had 80:20 wool carpets growing up and now in my own home. Never even heard of carpet moths until mumsnet.

Ask them about the moth guarantee.

YANBU Wink

MyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 23/11/2019 09:25

I struggle with the idea of supporting the purchase of something that will end up as "plastic soup" in landfill once the hoover fluff is emptied into the bin so YANBU in my book to buy wool.

Ladybirdman · 23/11/2019 09:26

Most wool for carpets should be treated for moths these days. If I was going to put any carpet in my house it would on my be 100% wool so I say go for it.

perpetuallybewildered · 23/11/2019 09:29

I had wool carpets for years without any signs of moths and replaced the very old stair and landing carpet about five years ago. It was destroyed by sodding moths. I’ve no idea where they came from, I spent a fortune on sprays to kill the feckers but hated having to douse my carpet in chemicals so in the end I binned it. That experience has put me off wool carpets for life.

motortroll · 23/11/2019 09:29

I had a part wool carpet. Was really difficult to clean, couldn't use any carpet cleaning products without marking it! Now have fully synthetic and I can just spray with kitchen spray lol

Wool does look and feel much better but I also think my synthetic carpets have always worn better too. The wool on my stairs did not last well and it sounds like it was similar to the one you've chosen.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/11/2019 09:29

Another month victim here!!

daisypond · 23/11/2019 09:34

Sorry, moths. Wrecked the stair carpet and elsewhere in house. Hallways and stairs don’t get much natural light to deter the critters.

TheVanguardSix · 23/11/2019 09:34

I wanted to get wool upstairs as well, OP. My mum had wool carpet in her house and it was fantastic. It lasted forever and looked great. Also, it is more eco-friendly.
Apparently the people who'd lived in my house before I moved in had wool carpet and a miserable moth infestation. So they changed back to synthetic. I'd heard this story from a neighbour, so I stuck with synthetic when I replaced the carpet, reluctantly so because wool just is 'quality'.
I think the thing is, if you see moths in your house in season, then I wouldn't get wool. If you never see moths and your woolen jumpers have survived life outside of moth-proof bags, then you don't have a problem. I see moths in our house. We definitely have them. In the summer months, they're always hanging about and if I don't protect our woolens, they get eaten. So getting wool carpet in my case, wouldn't have been a good move.
I guess the question is, what's your moth situation like in summer?

totallyradllama · 23/11/2019 09:34

We don't have moths (se not London).

We have 100% wool beige carpet on stairs and all over upstairs. When I fitted it the man said you will get about 10 years out of it and you will get tread wear on the landing where people turn and follow the route to the bedrooms. He said if you don't wear eg trainers upstairs it will help.

We don't wear shoes upstairs and small family.

So that was 12 years ago and it is exactly as predicted. Not worn enough that we will replace soon but definitely a two-tone effect with a sort of track where the pile has been trampled.

totallyradllama · 23/11/2019 09:36

Also honestly though I do love it and would pick it again it was so smooth and nice for young dc crawling/toddling but am sticking head in sand about replacing it.

Evennow · 23/11/2019 09:37

Moths can be a problem with wool carpets (eyes bedroom carpet with despair). Guarantee against moths? Read the small print very carefully...

Soontobe60 · 23/11/2019 09:41

My only issue on the carpet you've shown is the loop pile. On stairs it's not ideal as it's a slip hazard. Speak to a good independent carpet retailer for advice on the best type for stairs.

gavisconismyfriend · 23/11/2019 09:45

I’ve just put down 80/20 wool carpet on hall and stairs. Looks beautiful. Manufacturers say it is protected against moths. I love it!

CycleWoman · 23/11/2019 09:49

So many moth victims! I’m one too! 80% wool mottled carpet on landing,
Stairs and bedrooms. Loved it. Was quite easy to keep clean and lasted really well. Also felt nice underfoot.

It too got demolished around the edges by moths. Tbf I did have a baby at the time and possibly wasn’t as thorough in the hoovering front as I could have been. But got a new house and this time we are going for acrylic, sob!

AvenueQ · 23/11/2019 09:49

No moths in jumpers or anything

Why is loop more slippy than twist?

OP posts:
Waffles80 · 23/11/2019 09:55

I don’t know why it’s more slippy than twist but I slipped down the stairs while pregnant on our looped stair carpet which was pretty scary! The kids were forever slipping on it too.

We’ve just replaced the carpet in our new house and gone for twists on the advice of the carpet specialists because they bounce back quicker. Not only was the loop carpet in the previous house fecking dangerous, it also looked really shabby after about six months because it was clear where the wear was.

Waffles80 · 23/11/2019 10:03

New hour stairs carpet with blue walls. 80/20 not a death trap. Significantly cheaper than 100% wool looped carpet.

Old house stairs carpet with white walls. Looks amazing when first done but quickly deteriorated.

I don’t know why but I’ve had similar experiences to previous. It seems to get slippiest with age as it wears - kind of polished if you know what I mean? Thefts definitely have more traction
