To think the reduced section is the best place in the supermarket?

I know this is sad but I so love my bargains. My local supermarket has suddenly started reducing things to 25% of original selling price on the day they're due to go out of date.

Haven't bought full price meat or fish in months. Several pizza express pizzas in freezer. Tonight's chicken quesadilla and salad meal for 5 costing about £4.

Anyone else as sad as me?

My best find ever was a few years ago on Boxing Day in Sainsbury’s. £60 taste the difference goose reduced to £19 Grin I had had my eye on them and made a bee line straight for them, I was thrilled!

Dowser · 23/11/2019 16:19

My husband got 14 bottles of gf beer for 49 p each
There was somewhere in the region of £1 to £1-50 off each

Toomanycats99 · 23/11/2019 16:19

Hate Asda - I find it's not reduced much and then it's a gunfight when they do.

I had a good trip this week. I went in at 6pm and as they were low in staff later on I got there just as they did the down to 25% reductions.

3 packs of heck chicken sausages for 45p each. Pork tenderloin £1.50. And a few other bits all 75%!off.

Not enough to beat my just after Xmas Asda trip a few years ago when I got a tonne of meat for 90% off!

Our local Waitrose does an excellent line in reduced meat, and they're usually doing it at about the time I'm popping in there to pick up a bottle of wine. I've had packs of 2x duck breasts reduced from £9 to £2.29 (I bought six packs, there were about 20 there) and last week I got two £7 bone-in steaks for £2-ish each.

In fact, I need to go there today but I'm hanging on until an hour before closing 😁

woogal · 23/11/2019 16:34

I love the reduced section.

Unfortunately so do many others so most of the good stuff is away by the time I get there.

TheHootiestOwl · 23/11/2019 16:46

Years ago when I was out with my DM and DH we popped into a branch of what used to be Somerfields (remember them?) and found some reduced sandwiches for 3p!

We got to the till and they refused to sell them to us because they were reduced far too much, and actually accused us of sticking the reduced labels on ourselves!! Like WTAF? It was awful. Still can’t believe they spoke to us like that.

YANBU!

Waitress near us does a fabulous chiller area with loads of bargains to be had, but it's not always possible to predict when it will be, but the later the better

There is a Sainsburys nearby but their reductions are rubbish e.g. £2.50 reduced to £2.15 not worth bothering with

Moonmelodies · 23/11/2019 16:59

Viz comic have a strip called Whoops Aisle Apocalypse - a fascinating insight into supermarket reduced-price shenanigans.

TurquoiseDress · 23/11/2019 16:59

@bpirockin

I love it!

sittingonacornflake · 23/11/2019 17:02

8am at Aldi, everything use by that day is 50% off. God bless large freezers!

usernamerisnotavailable · 23/11/2019 17:23

If you're not on a tight budget you are VU for not buying free range IMO n

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 23/11/2019 17:45

I have had loads of 9p bakery bargains from morrisons in the past. Like the Danish pastries or 4 pack of muffins!
Recently got their whole carrot cake from the chilled cake fridge reduced to 90p from £3 odd and it was dated use by the next day.
They do good reductions on the hot chicken counter if you go at the right time in the evening too. I love yellow sticker bargains!

TheQueef · 23/11/2019 17:52

I must boast.
DC works at a supermarket, after the cheap shelf there is the staff shelf! It's free.
It does mean some random meals and sometimes you can only eat so many boxes of mince pies. Trust me.
It's a massive help to us.

CSIblonde · 23/11/2019 17:55

I love a bargain even when not hard up. I asked the till lady I'm friendly with in Asda the best time to go for the marked down cooked chicken chunks/pieces & the freshly made curries I love: she told me 4-7pm. The chicken chunks are usually down from £1.80 to 80p & the curries from £4 to £1.50. Tesco never has anything marked down & I've popped in at all sorts of times, so I'm going to ask one of the till ladies there, who are all v nice/chatty (no shame!) .

poorstudent1010 · 23/11/2019 18:17

I actually hate when staff at M&S begin to reduce their items, a massive, uncivilised crowd slowly starts gathering around the staff member/their trolley and then these customers start bickering between them over the last reduced ham sandwichConfused or just refuse to move out of the way for anyone who actually wants to buy something from the aisles they’re stood in front of & blocking!

StealthPolarBear · 23/11/2019 19:38

That's me :)
In reality I've only been in afterwarda

Velveteenfruitbowl · 23/11/2019 19:42

M&S also good for discounts but there is always a small swarm hanging around waiting to pounce which rather puts me off. I was once in Asda when the discounting happened. I think I’d rather not eat than go through that myself.

Notwiththeseknees · 23/11/2019 21:10

Bit late to the party, but best day for shopping EVER was when there was a power cut at our local coop. I can't remember if it was Christmas Eve or the day before, but word went round the village and the place was mobbed. They had brought in a generator, but the overlooking flats complained about the noise. It was an utter free for all. Literally charged 10p per item, then not even that. Sadly I got there after the smoked salmon had gone.

Notwiththeseknees · 23/11/2019 21:13

Tonight's bargains.

SamBeckett · 27/11/2019 22:28

How's this lot for a bargain!
At full price it would have cost me £13.60 ish . , it actually cost me £2.73 . The best saving was a sushi it was 80p instead of £4
And I got a 25p off coupon on bread .
All thanks to shopping at a Co-op at about 7:30

I absolutely love a yellow sticker item however you will rarely find a good one in Tesco. I got to the till one evening with a pack of pork ribs which I then realised went out of date that day (the store was about 30 minutes from closing)
The staff could only offer me 30% off and when I said no and pointed out that in half an hour they would have to be binned, they told me it would be going in the staff shop with everything else. Glad they look after their staff, but not so good for the customer!

StealthPolarBear · 28/11/2019 20:04

I've just eaten a tesco lentil Dahl half price

Swishswish26 · 28/11/2019 20:49

Good find Stealth Lentil Dahl is one of my faves!

StealthPolarBear · 28/11/2019 20:59

And I got one for the freezer :)
Apologies if you were behind me...
