To think the reduced section is the best place in the supermarket?

I know this is sad but I so love my bargains. My local supermarket has suddenly started reducing things to 25% of original selling price on the day they're due to go out of date.

Haven't bought full price meat or fish in months. Several pizza express pizzas in freezer. Tonight's chicken quesadilla and salad meal for 5 costing about £4.

Anyone else as sad as me?

The best thing I've ever seen was last weekend in Asda - a bottle of Moet and Chandon with a yellow sticker on the box all because the security tag had ripped some of the foil on the top of the bottle! £18 instead of £35!

PineappleDanish · 23/11/2019 10:19

I am also happy to buy cereal where the box is bashed but the plastic liner intact. Tonight's dinner - two packs of Heck chicken sausages, reduced from £2 to 50p a pack. Unearthed them at the back of the freezer when trying to squeeze in yesterday's purchases.

My local Sainsburys have just changed their policy - used to have a very small area in the chiller cabinets where they put reduced fresh stuff, and everyone made a beeline for it. They have stopped that and the stuff in in its normal places on the shelves, and reduced there. Makes more sense I suppose and means there isn't a trolley jam in one place.

happycamper11 · 23/11/2019 10:21

This never happens here, they only ever reduce it slightly and with meat I'd rather have it fresh than save 12p

senua · 23/11/2019 10:22

Heck chicken sausages are often reduced. For a reason.
Proper sausages are made of pork.

PineappleDanish · 23/11/2019 10:23

But it is still fresh... you just have to use it that day, or freeze it. Was too late at Waitrose last night. Woman in front of me in the queue had a lovely looking joint of beef for less than £2.

I just managed to snaffle the gorgeous salted caramel cake at 49p a slice rather than £2 though, so all was not lost.

My local Tesco is shit at reductions. Why would I buy something that is reduced by 40p? Unless I was going to buy it anyway.

My parents get amazing reductions at their local supermarket. Food is reduced to pennies.

Why does it differ so much? I’ve always wondered.

PineappleDanish · 23/11/2019 10:26

I'm not sure. We have had an Aldi open by us in the last fortnight and I'm wondering whether Asda are seeing trade suffer as a consequence and have more stuff to get rid of. It must be a policy which the store manager works out rather than something being set nationally as there is so much variation.

It's great if you avoid the ready meals and slimy bags of salad. The organic fruit and veg in Tesco has been reduced quite often recently and they last so much longer than the others. It's encouraged me to buy it whether reduced or not and would seem to be a win for the supermarket as a result.

PineappleDanish · 23/11/2019 10:28

Someone mentioned the charlie binghams ready meals - we love them too but unfortunately more often than not they can't be frozen. Especially the ones with rice. I do buy them reduced occasionally though - and the boxes are a massive hit with the gerbils!!

Strawbmilk I've discovered our m and s reduce after 7 and very slowly. But if you do get something reduced its a huge discount, I think I got a posh pack of vegi stir fry for about 20p and those little wedges of brie for 5p.

easyandy101 · 23/11/2019 10:31

Why does it differ so much?

Volume left to shift normally

We (indie) would reduce by 30p with 1 day to go and half price on the last day and then down to 50p for the last few hours of trade. You'd be really surprised the difference that the 30p makes

We also found that if you reduced too quickly our by too much then people treated it with suspicion and were less likely to buy it

Pinkypurple35 · 23/11/2019 10:32

There are some proper hard core bargain grabbing people near me who literally snagged everything.... croissants and bread rolls were bagged up at 5 for 5p and they were sweeping all of them into their trolley not letting anyone else near, very selfish IMO.

my2bundles · 23/11/2019 10:32

Always look for bargains in asda esp for beef and chicken 😊 I got the 90p chicken aswell, 4 packs straight in my freezer

StealthPolarBear · 23/11/2019 10:32

I quite like tesco. They reduce in the morning by about 10p but then more drastically in the afternoon. So I often get a wicked ready meal reduced to about £1.80ish instead of £4

easyandy101 · 23/11/2019 10:33

Best big name for discounts are the mini waitrose IME

Also the Dark Store

^^ This is very outing Grin

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2019 10:35

Coop reduced sections are usually very good.

I don't envy the staff doing the reducing though, it's not a good job if you like your personal space.

littlepaddypaws · 23/11/2019 10:39

i love a bargain me !! but not for the sake of it, it needs to be something i need.
my son recently moved into unfurnished flat and has kitted it out in good quality charity furniture for just under £900, he bought a brand new bed and mattress, bedding and towels but the rest was reduced clearance etc. a tall fridge freezer for £90 anyone ? it's looking good ds !

Redcrayons · 23/11/2019 10:39

Love a good yellow sticker! For lunch we are having a 14p baguette.
We used to have a co op which had massive over stock issues (big floor space but tiny stock room) and it would have a whole fridge full of reduced stuff. It was fab. Not surprisingly, they got rid of it and now it’s a £££ Spar.

Serenity45 · 23/11/2019 10:39

I pass Asda and Waitrose on my way to the bus stop after work. Let's just say our freezer is pretty full and we eat very well! Lucky enough not to be on a tight budget but like a pp I prefer more money for fun stuff.

There's nothing like a tray of eggs for 10p to make my day Grin

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2019 10:40

It's nice when something that you fancy trying is reduced but you would never dream of buying it full price.

SamBeckett · 23/11/2019 10:43

Please don't be colourist , Orange stickers are just as good 😂
I got them monsters from the co-op a few days ago .

Our local Morrison’s is bloody great with yellow stickers . I’ve had vast amounts of fish fillets , enough to make a massive fish pie out of , for less than two quid in total , a whole salmon for a fiver , all sorts . Our best bargains are at about 7.30 , and when we were really reall skint , I’d make sure I was there . It turned out I wasn’t the only one , there would be about twenty of us . So to avoid a punch up , one man would take it upon himself to hand it out “ Who wants two chicken fillets ? Five lots !” And people would put their hands up and off they’d go . So civilised . The staff used to love the fact that it wasn’t a gigantic free for all .

TheHootiestOwl · 23/11/2019 10:55

See even in the evening my local Tesco rarely reduces anything by much.

june2007 · 23/11/2019 11:01

It depends when it,s reduced by 10p it,s hardly a bargain and when it has to be used that day it,s not necessarily worth it either. But great if you can get a bag of spuds for 8p.
