Did anyone see the man on QT asking about tax?

Apparently he doesn't even think he is in the top 50 percent of earners.

All doctors earn more apparently and solicitors.

How out of touch with reality?

He didn't come across well and very out of touch.

"For a large number of people, not a small number of people" is really not exclusive and inflammatory. I suppose if you think Labour is declaring war on you/the top 5% personally and plans to eat the rich etc then you could read it differently.

lovemylot1 · 26/11/2019 14:35

Xenia yes I agree. My issue isn’t with the tax increase - it’s with the manifesto overall which is suspect most people haven’t read in full.

Yes forcing companies to hand over shares but where do they go? Not to employees who only receive a capped annual dividend. The government will own the shares

Rent controls and controls on landlords, 32 hour working week with no reduction in pay, and unilateral action on multinational tax avoidance which implies labour may not collaborate with the OECD on its ongoing projects if it doesn’t fit in with Mcd’s ideology

My Facebook is suddenly full of friends and neighbours who seem to loathe these top 5% for some reason - including me and my family except that they must not know that. The campaign is definitely inflammatory. It’s very unpleasant.

Top 5% of taxpayers is a lot of people! If it were another minority group they were referring to would that be ok?

Look up class wars and socialism...

53rdWay · 26/11/2019 14:48

I’m not responsible for your Facebook friends Hmm

Changing taxation is a totally reasonable thing to have in a party manifesto. Increasing taxation levels for the top 5% of earners is not hatred or class war or ‘picking on top earners’.

I think they should increase taxation for those of us lower down the ladder as well, I’d be perfectly happy to pay more for better funded public services.

That’s laudable.

I would in principle but there is a lot more to this than a tax increase.

53rdWay · 26/11/2019 15:01

A lot more to what, Labour's manifesto? Yes there's a lot in there beyond the tax increase. I don't agree with everything they're suggesting in the manifesto and outside it and I'm not planning to vote Labour. I still think that the suggested tax changes are reasonable and really not worth the levels of outrage from people like delusional Question Time bloke.

“If it were another minority group they were referring to would that be ok?”

Minority group? Well I suppose using the scientific definition that includes the top 5% of earners, but not in sociology, which is how people generally use that term.

I mean, using it the way you just did, royalty are a minority group...

Lifecraft

Perhaps passing an IQ test before you are allowed to vote might not be such a bad idea.

Are you Vivienne Rook from Years and Years?

FTSE down.

Utilities offshoring.

Some posters came back to me about my post asking - why do any of the 95% vote for Tory, when the Tories will fuck them over, poster's have come back with they are better for the economy...it still don't wash...Boris is Fuck business, Boris is no deal, the CBI are not supportive of the tories approach, the conservatives have not invested sufficiently in health, training and education - they do not invest in people. I am more inclined to believe that the right-wing press has hood-winked them to believe that immigrants are the problem but to Boris and his chums poor people are the problem they would rather not deal with - just apportion blame, the populists are good at that!
