To think I shouldn't have had to pay the hairdresser twice?

I'll try and explain exactly what happened so that I can get a true picture as to whether IABU or not! This may be completely normal.

Last week I went to a new hairdresser (because she has just opened in our village and we have never had one before- much more convenient too). I had a full head of highlights and a trim. At the end she said that my roots hadn't lifted as well as the rest of my hair (which had had previous highlights) and that they were still quite 'warm' (her words). She then said see what it looks like over the next couple of days, and if you aren't happy come back. Her exact words. I paid £70 which is on the higher end of average for down here- I normally pay £60.

My roots were quite gingery after a couple of days and there was a noticeable difference between them and the rest of my hair, so I made another appointment. Totally not her fault as I understand that it's not an exact science.

Went to my second appointment today. She redid the highlights on the roots but they still didn't lift, so she put a toner on to blend it all in. The colour wasn't what I had originally asked for but I thought hey ho, at least it all matches now. I decided to buy some fancy conditioner and went to the till.

She charged me £70 again!!! It wasn't a mistake as we had been chatting the whole time about the previous visit. I stupidly paid because we live in a small village and I would bump into her constantly and also two other people I knew were in the salon at the time. I was also being a wuss.

I'm thinking of going back tomorrow to ask for my money back. AIBU?

Did she refund you op?? She was in the wrong, my DM had something similar recently. The colour was much more a mixed darker red than she wanted it when she asked so she went back a week later and had highlights through to lighten it and the hairdresser didn't charge her for it as she knew my DM wasn't happy initially.

OP, how does your hair look now?
There’s an excellent shampoo called FANOLA. There’s an anti-yellow version for brassy blonde and an anti-orange for ginger trouble with darker hair color.
I use the anti-yellow and it’s fabulous for taking the brassy tones out of my bleached highlights.
I know this doesn’t solve your money troubles but it will help with your hair. xo

Get purple shampoo! Works like magic.

VenusTiger · 23/11/2019 02:32

@exaltedwombat you can’t compare a half hour ‘men’s trim’ with a 3/4 hour appointment for colour, toner and haircut.
I agree it’s a ridiculous amount, but £70 is considered cheap in most places.
Some people like to get a colour done and the salon has overheads, products used and staff to pay.

mcmooberry · 23/11/2019 07:55

Skipped to the end to see if any updates! Hope you got something sorted OP, very unfair to pay twice imo, maybe £30 would have been acceptable. Understand why you paid up, would have probably done the same!

Peachypips78 · 23/11/2019 10:22

Exalted- I totally get what you are saying. And the patriarchy can't make me do anything!

However I like my hair lighter and it's ME that wants it done rather than me listening to what other people want me to do. I enjoy hair, clothes and make up.

I've heard of Fanola. I'll go and buy some.

I haven't gone in yet but might send my bank details so I don't have to woman up!

I would say that it is never late to ask her at least. Firstly I would call and I would raise the point about you paying on the day because you didn't want to make a fuss in front of her other clients ( just tell her the truth). I am sure she will respect the fact that you didn't say anything then and that you are calling her so that the conversation is private rather that you going to the salon. After that you could say that perhaps it wasn't fair and that it was not your fault. May be she will realise that that was wrong and she might return the money or give you a discount. Good luck.

Ok if you cba to RTFT but at least read the OPs updates BlossomingTulip

Ive been a hairdresser for 10 years and theres no excuse. It is an exact science. She could have checked during the lifting process and reapplied if needed and also toned it straight away. But to be honest if shes been doing it for a while neither of those should have to be done.

scubadive · 23/11/2019 11:26

You need to get your refund ASAP before she changes her mind again.

She sounds terrible, why did she take off the highlights in the first place if they hadn’t lifted, that’s her job to check and why did she reapply more colour to your already coloured hair so that part went lighter.

She should have given you the conditioner for free for the inconvenience,
I hate going to the hairdressers, wasting time again that still hasn’t resolved it would be an issue for me.

What do you mean she said no at first to a refund, on what basis?

Get your refund today

Eckhart · 23/11/2019 13:48

I don't think she can change her mind, can she? She agreed to the refund in an email, so OP has it in writing.

poorstudent1010 · 23/11/2019 14:23

She sounds unprofessional enough to change her mind tbh

Eckhart · 23/11/2019 14:36

If OP has it in writing that she's agreed she owes the refund, then the merest mention of Small Claims Court should nudge the £70 out of her.

FrostythefeckinSnowman · 23/11/2019 15:18

Glad she’s seen sense and is going to refund you.
Roots should lift easily with bleach because you’re dealing with virgin hair. So if they’re still quite orange or brassy then she’s made a mistake and it’s up to her to rectify it.

BloggersBlog · 23/11/2019 15:30

TBH she is lucky you havent asked for the whole £140 you've paid her if you still arent happy. She should be relieved it is only £70

poorstudent1010 · 23/11/2019 16:05

Yeah - it also sounds like your hair still isn’t the colour you initially wanted after all this too, so she’s lucky you didn’t ask for a full refund.

Peasplease21 · 23/11/2019 16:30

I would just leave it now, but don’t ever go back.
