To think I shouldn't have had to pay the hairdresser twice?

I'll try and explain exactly what happened so that I can get a true picture as to whether IABU or not! This may be completely normal.

Last week I went to a new hairdresser (because she has just opened in our village and we have never had one before- much more convenient too). I had a full head of highlights and a trim. At the end she said that my roots hadn't lifted as well as the rest of my hair (which had had previous highlights) and that they were still quite 'warm' (her words). She then said see what it looks like over the next couple of days, and if you aren't happy come back. Her exact words. I paid £70 which is on the higher end of average for down here- I normally pay £60.

My roots were quite gingery after a couple of days and there was a noticeable difference between them and the rest of my hair, so I made another appointment. Totally not her fault as I understand that it's not an exact science.

Went to my second appointment today. She redid the highlights on the roots but they still didn't lift, so she put a toner on to blend it all in. The colour wasn't what I had originally asked for but I thought hey ho, at least it all matches now. I decided to buy some fancy conditioner and went to the till.

She charged me £70 again!!! It wasn't a mistake as we had been chatting the whole time about the previous visit. I stupidly paid because we live in a small village and I would bump into her constantly and also two other people I knew were in the salon at the time. I was also being a wuss.

I'm thinking of going back tomorrow to ask for my money back. AIBU?

Also thinking she read the thread, or had a friend on here, or posted on a hairdressers forum about her cheeky customer and everyone told her she was the CFer!

Put a Review on a site like Trust Pilot

Toomuchtrouble4me · 22/11/2019 19:12

Areyoufree

Just say that you didn’t want to say anything in front of the other customers. Makes it look like you were trying to protect her reputation. But I think you should go back
Good idea - Or a phone call

plightofthealbatross · 22/11/2019 19:16

I'm glad she's changed her mind and decided to refund you. I think you're right, she did consult someone(s)... and they all said she'd be wrong not to, no doubt.

soggysaladdays · 22/11/2019 19:18

This happened to me but I did not pay for the second appointment. I just said in a really friendly way that I was not happy , the highlights hadn't taken and the hairdresser had to agree so she arranged the second appointment and there was no question of me paying again. I think you need to go back and be frank about how you feel but do it in a really nice way. it then gives her a chance to explain why she charged you twice.

Raphael34 · 22/11/2019 19:23

What was the outcome op

jwpetal · 22/11/2019 19:40

You should not have to pay. We all freeze sometimes. £70 is alot and the service was not done properly. To be honest, if she says no she will have issues with reputation and your business. You can do it firmly yet kind. good luck.

Stupiddriver1 · 22/11/2019 19:48

I had similar with the village garage and my old camper van. They incorrectly fitted a seatbelt and when I realised 200 miles from home I had to cut it off in order to be able to pull the bed out.

I rang them and they said bring it back. Fitted a new seatbelt and they tried to charge me £60. I laughed and refused to pay for their fuck up. Thankfully there’s a second garage in the village.

WhiffOfBath · 22/11/2019 20:16

Thank goodness she has agreed to refund you, Peachypips.

I had similar with 16 yo DD. She was crying about her hair being "ginger" when she washed her hair two days after highlights (which her dad and I bought her for as a special birthday present). I was horrified as I am completely non-confrontational and have a complete fear of having to complain. However, because it was DD, I took her back to the salon and showed it to the hairdresser, complete with "I'm sure we are using the wrong shampoo or something, as it really shouldn't be orange, and we have evidently done something wrong", mea culpa-style disclaimers. The hairdresser re-did it and just charged me £12 for a toner. In the circs, I was very glad, and so was DD. If I'd had to pay a further £70, I'd have been very upset as that is a huge amount of money.

Casiloco · 22/11/2019 20:18

I would go back and say
I appreciate I should have said something at the time but was taken aback when I was charged again for what was essentially the same process last time, as that visit was to rectify the problem which had arisen on my first appointment.

I appreciate that you had to spend more time on my hair but I think in the circumstances, I should at least have a complimentary haircut next time I visit, together with a voucher towards my next colour treatment. I can't really afford to pay twice if any problems arise in future and would like to use you again but don't really feel I have been treated fairly so if you can't agree to that I would have to consider whether I try and find another hairdresser. Hope you understand?

Casiloco · 22/11/2019 20:19

Oops missed the update. Good outcome.

Elieza · 22/11/2019 20:27

That’s great you got your money back OP

Result Smile

Peachypips78 · 22/11/2019 20:27

Hi all.

Smellycandle- I said I was happy with bleach, had had bleach highlights before and even said my hair takes longer to lift than most people's hair. I haven't touched my hair at home either! I think you are right about the cost though- I'm not sure how they make any money. I've never been anywhere down here though that charges more except for really fancy salons in the nearby city. In rural South West.

She is the manager and owner.

Tbh this morning my roots still have a gingery cast. I can't have anything else done to it now or it will fall out!

I haven't been back in yet as I work 7:30-7:30 so have been out the whole time it's been open. I'll try and post a pic of her response.

Shit I posted it!!! Don't look!! I've just reported.

@Peachypips78 I’ve been back twice after colour and toner to have my roots redone and to have the toner tweaked - didn’t pay a single penny both corrections.
Did you have just roots done too? £70 is definitely unreasonable, it should’ve been free or just pay for toner, £10/15.
Can you ring instead and ask to speak to the manager, you’ll probably find it easier not to back down.

VenusTiger · 22/11/2019 20:45

Cross posted - great to hear you’ve had a refund. Hope you get your roots sorted

poorstudent1010 · 22/11/2019 20:57

I think use loads of conditioning treatments over the next 8 weeks, when your hair starts to feel stronger you can use purple shampoo or purple hair masks to tone down the ginger - but once the 8 weeks are up just book in elsewhere. Hopefully a toner or a bleach bath should be all you need to remove the ginger.

Eckhart · 22/11/2019 21:14

I'd just email her my bank details. I wouldn't go in - it'll feel awkward. She can do a bank transfer. Easier for you both.

And it means you never have to set foot in her shop again.

MistyCloud · 22/11/2019 21:34

@Peachypips78 Glad it was an OK result. Smile

Fancy saying no to start with though! As a pp said, I wonder if she spoke to someone about it?

yuiop · 22/11/2019 21:42

Fanola No Yellow or Orange shampoo 👍

LittleMissMe99 · 22/11/2019 21:51

I've had to go back...and did not pay

exaltedwombat · 23/11/2019 00:07

Alright, I'll get kicked for this. But what IS this self-inflicted requirement to have a £70 hairdo rather than the £10 trim men get by with? The Patriarchy isn't making you do this, YOU are.

Start kicking...

SunsetBoulevard3 · 23/11/2019 00:18

I’ve had to go back several times to have roots redone when they haven’t taken properly. Always had it done free. This woman sounds like a really bad hairdresser and has no idea of decent customer service. I don’t really understand why you are so hesitant. Just go in and get your money back. No way she should have charged you twice . Don’t go back again after that.
