To think I shouldn't have had to pay the hairdresser twice?

I'll try and explain exactly what happened so that I can get a true picture as to whether IABU or not! This may be completely normal.

Last week I went to a new hairdresser (because she has just opened in our village and we have never had one before- much more convenient too). I had a full head of highlights and a trim. At the end she said that my roots hadn't lifted as well as the rest of my hair (which had had previous highlights) and that they were still quite 'warm' (her words). She then said see what it looks like over the next couple of days, and if you aren't happy come back. Her exact words. I paid £70 which is on the higher end of average for down here- I normally pay £60.

My roots were quite gingery after a couple of days and there was a noticeable difference between them and the rest of my hair, so I made another appointment. Totally not her fault as I understand that it's not an exact science.

Went to my second appointment today. She redid the highlights on the roots but they still didn't lift, so she put a toner on to blend it all in. The colour wasn't what I had originally asked for but I thought hey ho, at least it all matches now. I decided to buy some fancy conditioner and went to the till.

She charged me £70 again!!! It wasn't a mistake as we had been chatting the whole time about the previous visit. I stupidly paid because we live in a small village and I would bump into her constantly and also two other people I knew were in the salon at the time. I was also being a wuss.

I'm thinking of going back tomorrow to ask for my money back. AIBU?

There is no way I'd pay twice.
I returned once for a redo of highlights the line of the old root was still visible, she was a bit snotty.
I never even considered repaying.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 22/11/2019 13:03

Oh god i hate these situations...i used to go to a village hairdresser a few years ago....my dd wanted her hair permed so i booked her in as a bday present....the perm didnt take at all and looked awful....we had a bit of a row with them to get our money back and since then ive never been able to go in for my haircuts.

PuppyMonkey · 22/11/2019 13:06

I messaged her and at first she said no Shock

She sounds proper dodgy OP, get your money back and never darken her doors again.

wineisnecessary · 22/11/2019 13:12

No hairdressers would charge you twice . It happens occasionally the colour doesn't take but you pay for a service and she had to it twice but that's not your fault and you not pay twice . I hope you get your money back .

Rickytickytembo · 22/11/2019 13:19

Can't believe she initially replied 'no'! Hope it's not too awkward when you go to collect your money back OP.

Ilovecat · 22/11/2019 13:56

I would never pay twice!
I had a similar to happened to me last year when I got full head highlights- paid £80 and got home, looked in the mirror for the back part and thought wow it looks not that great, like she missed a lot and it was really dark, even at sides etc.
She was new too in the town.
I brushed it off for few days but it kept bothering me so I phoned her and told her very politely that I don’t think the colour lift well in the back. She kept repeating its lovely. I said not it’s not.
Than she said come back then and she redone it all over again-
Free of charge obviously. I would never pay twice as it was her fault. I have having done highlights for last 15 years so I know how it should look.

cherish123 · 22/11/2019 17:33

You should not have paid again. You were back to have an error rectified.

ToftyAC · 22/11/2019 17:44

Go back, but don’t use her again. She sounds shit.

Happygirl79 · 22/11/2019 17:46

No way I would've paid again. I do understand that sometimes it is difficult when you've been put on the spot to stand up for yourself but you owe it to yourself to go back and explain how you feel about it
She can do the right thing by you and have a loyal customer or decline and lose one

smellycandle · 22/11/2019 17:51

I am a hairdresser with 30 years experience and my own business.
I haven't read all the posts but it seems like the hairdresser had misjudged your natural colour and didn't get the results she/he and you expected. That can happen with someone who's hair you're not familiar with.
It's ALL about the consultation, did you say you don't want bleach? Did she ask or did you not tell her if you have coloured your own hair in between having hi lites? (That really affects the results).
End of the day it is the stylists fault because she is the expert and should have consulted properly.
So unless you insisted and went against her advise or misled her about your hair it's a clear cut case.
Of course sometimes people make mistakes but a redo in that instance is ALWAYS complimentary along with lots of apologies and even better a complimentary hair mask to use at home to counteract the damage multiple colouring can do.

Tbh I am AMAZED anyone can run a profitable business and continue to educate themselves in the industry if they are only charging £70 for a full head of hilites and a cut and blow dry! I am based in london but good quality products cost a lot of money aswell! For me that would be 3 hours work, what other tradesperson charges that for that much work! You do get what you pay for! My price would be £200 and I'm relatively cheap in my area!

OrangeZog · 22/11/2019 17:55

I’m glad she agreed. I suspect her business won’t be a success because she sounds at best incompetent!

poorstudent1010 · 22/11/2019 17:57

Glad it’s sorted. You’re very lucky to only pay £70 for full head of highlights, cut and blowdry. That would set me back almost £200 as my salon charges for each service separately (yes - the blow dry isn’t included in the price!)

However my salon is very, very good at lightening hair and something like this just wouldn’t happen. You get what you pay for, I suppose. Are you going to get your hair done with her again?

smellycandle · 22/11/2019 18:00

Also should have said I would also be very reluctant to give a refund, (I don't think I ever have) but I would go out of my way to win the customer onside and genuinely be upset and want to rectify my mistake. With an experienced stylist it very rarely happens so it's upsetting for us too!
It sounds like maybe she doesn't quite enough experience yet, hopefully they will learn quickly from their mistakes.

smellycandle · 22/11/2019 18:01

@poorstudent1010
Yes!

Boujee · 22/11/2019 18:04

I'm a salon owner, you definitely shouldn't have paid twice, its ridiculous, sometimes these things happen, but she will be out of business if she carries on like that, glad she has refunded, l don't know what she was thinking.

zaffa · 22/11/2019 18:05

I would have complained when my hair went ginger! I think that it's her responsibility to know how not to make that happen. I've had highlights done my whole life, and my hair has a habit of going ginger or brassy if not toned correctly. I consider it to be the responsibility of the hairdresser to know enough to either say no, we can't get the colour you want; do a colour test to check if it will work, or fix it if it goes wrong. Preferably before I have to leave the salon!

Celestine70 · 22/11/2019 18:05

I agree she shouldn't have charged you. Is she the owner?

pollymere · 22/11/2019 18:06

Correction should be FOC. Go back, explain you're not happy with the colour and that you want a refund. She has screwed your hair up twice now. A full refund £140 minus cost of cut (£40?) So £100 towards going to a different salon to get it fixed. Get over the village thing. My Mum once had a perm fail twice and nothing really happened in village terms. She is the newbie and you would hate for someone to have their hair break off from a poor bleaching or a hideous cut. Protect the interests of the people you like!

She said no?? Did she say why not?

I'm glad she changed her mind.

Jack80 · 22/11/2019 18:34

I would ring to speak to a manager and say you paid including the cut and you dont agree you should pay twice. I personally would have asked her would I be charged for getting my colour done again

Tistheseason17 · 22/11/2019 18:34

How did it go when you went back?

Huxley1234 · 22/11/2019 18:41

You should not have to pay as any hairdresser I know would be happy to have the chance to correct highlights. If she doesn’t give you your money back I’d be leaving a review to warn others.

poorstudent1010 · 22/11/2019 18:48

It is so cheeky that she charged the entire £70 again too - wasn’t the initial £70 supposed to cover a cut and blowdry too, meaning that the colour services were lesss than £70. So she even tried to cut a profit the 2nd time around.

poorstudent1010 · 22/11/2019 18:49

The more I think about this thread, I don’t think you should ever go back OP!

You’ll just keep having problems further down the line.
