We've moved house and it's gas appliances there. So got rid of electric oven.
For some reason on the rare occasion I cook chips they don't cook even.. Yes it's probably me. But I just cba with it.

DH said about getting a fryer.. As he also prefers fried chips. I'm not fussed as its prob about a once a month thing anyway.
I think it would be easier anyway and quicker.. Would need one with large capacity but ideally. Not too pricey as wont be used loads..

Altho I'm thinking of deep fried brie as never have that at home.

Oh the calories

This thread is quite old, but if you’re here looking for a fryer to cook chips to perfection, we’ve recently updated our best deep fat fryer page with plenty of great Mumsnetter-approved options that aren't too pricey. We hope you find it useful.

I’ve never owned one. My mum always had one growing up but has recently got rid of it. I’m gutted, it was a treat going round for chips out of the fryer and the actifry is no way near as good taste wise.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 21/11/2019 23:10

We mainly use ours for random things like churros and pakoras etc but DP makes really good chips too. Every couple of weeks maybe.

Evilspiritgin · 21/11/2019 23:18

I used to have an actifry but had to throw it out, oven chips tasted nicer plus it stunk out my kitchen,

f00k · 22/11/2019 00:15

We had one but it was a PITA to empty and clean. I do miss the delicious chips and crispy fried onion strings though. Oven chips just aren't on the same level.

Quick question the the deep fat fryer owners. Do you empty out the oil each time? We’ve had ours for around a month, dh does the frying and says you should only change the oil every now and then?

ChanklyBore · 22/11/2019 09:09

I just have a pan with oil in it when I want to deep fry things. I’ve got one on the go now as I made samosas last week, then onion Bhaji the next day. When I’ve got one going I’ll use it until the oil is gone or grim, sweetcorn fritters went in it last night. Some things just need to be deep fried.

We also have the Olioclean deep fat fryer it's amazing and filters the oil and can be stuck in the dishwasher Would definitely recommend that.
Then we have our air fryer. Great as can also be put in the dishwasher. We use this for chicken goujons/hash browns/wedges but the chips are way better fried in the fat fryer.

EpcotForever · 22/11/2019 09:17

We always use the deep fat fryer outside though as it does smell!

EpcotForever · 22/11/2019 09:17

@Afternooninthepark we change ours every 5th use but it gets filtered after every use.

f00k · 22/11/2019 10:51

@Afternooninthepark pretty much the same as Epcot. When I had one I would change it completely every 4 uses, sometimes sooner if it was looking a bit dark, but I would filter it after every use using a funnel filter thingy I got from Amazon.

An air fryer is good but comparatively doesn't come close to proper deep fried chips.
I have an actifry and as good as it is it's not a deep fat fried chip. I often look at the proper fryer that will still have in the loft and am tempted to pull it down, just for once. But I know it will never go back again Grin

MadisonMontgomery · 22/11/2019 11:01

See I have an air fryer and I hate it - I don’t know what I am doing wrong, stuff is just dried out and burnt. I have the tefal one.

Shoeshelpplease · 22/11/2019 11:03

Air fryer all the way.

The smell that lingers on everything from deep fat fryers is awful. You can't smell it yourself but I could easily identify the kids at primary school whose families had the things, even if not used daily.

Used to nauseate me. Don't do that to the teachers!

kmammamalto · 22/11/2019 11:12

We just bought one for the first time! I never had one growing up but as pps have said the chips are fab. Also we have a crap oven and the speed they cook stuff at is a life saver sometimes!

floraloctopus · 22/11/2019 11:16

I've never used one, nor does anybody I know.

Ah, you mean the Frequent Fryers!
