We've moved house and it's gas appliances there. So got rid of electric oven.
For some reason on the rare occasion I cook chips they don't cook even.. Yes it's probably me. But I just cba with it.

DH said about getting a fryer.. As he also prefers fried chips. I'm not fussed as its prob about a once a month thing anyway.
I think it would be easier anyway and quicker.. Would need one with large capacity but ideally. Not too pricey as wont be used loads..

Altho I'm thinking of deep fried brie as never have that at home.

Oh the calories

This thread is quite old, but if you’re here looking for a fryer to cook chips to perfection, we’ve recently updated our best deep fat fryer page with plenty of great Mumsnetter-approved options that aren't too pricey. We hope you find it useful.

It terrifies me to remember that my mum used to cook her chips in an open chip pan, second batch left unattended while we sat in the dining room eating the first batch. Midway through the meal she'd deputise some child to go get the second batch.

I know, absolutely not the point of the thread, but it gives me the shivers now.

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 21/11/2019 18:44

yes only cook home made chips in it though
or scollops

MatildaJane · 21/11/2019 18:51

We are the same, would like one but worried about fat issue - all these comments in favour of deep fat fryers ... hmmm sod it I'm going to get one.

Picklypickles · 21/11/2019 18:56

Oh no I can't be trusted with hot fat!! My mum gave me one when I moved out of home into my first place, I didn't really know how it worked, overfilled it and probably had it on too high because the first time I tried to use it overflowed and I almost melted my entire kitchen.

SilverySurfer · 21/11/2019 19:09

I bought a fryer but I don't think it got hot enough so I've gone back to my open chip pan. I'm extremely careful and don't leave it for a minute, and it makes much better chips.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/11/2019 19:19

I've just given away my air fryer. Despite what people say, the chips are NOT like real chips. Possibly a lot of people aren't old enough to know what they should taste like when cooked from scratch because cafes and restaurant chains all use frozen chips now.

I don't have a deep fat fryer because I'm terrified of the hot fat, but nothing that is meant to be fried tastes as good from an air fryer.

scaryteacher · 21/11/2019 19:25

Most of Belgium from the amount of deep fat dryers on sale there, and the amount if things that need to be cooked in one. My Dutch teacher was appalled that I didn't have one, and didn't cook chips either. Why bother, when the frituur ones are so good?

BBCK · 21/11/2019 19:26

Chips from the deep fat fryer are amazing. Was so handy when the kids were young and loads of hungry boys used to turn up at our house.
We eat very healthily most of the time though. 😀

GettingABitDesperateNow · 21/11/2019 19:29

We dont have one as when we want something fried its infrequent enough that we just use a wok and a thermometer. We do live very near a chip shop though.

Home made onion rings and tempura are also a winner

Josephinebettany · 21/11/2019 19:44

We have an acti fryer (as opposed to an air fryer) You use a tablespoon of oil so they are fried therefore taste delicious. But only a spoonful in all the potatoes so not unhealthy

noimnottryingforagirl · 21/11/2019 19:46

Vikkimoog what is the smell situation with the tefal one you have? We have an open plan kitchen and even with powerful extractor I fear the house will smell like a chip shop?!

hidinginthenightgarden · 21/11/2019 19:48

We got one. Poured in 1.5 litres of oil and cooked 3 portions of chips. Only 1.2 litres came back out! Totally Gross! We have an air fryer and they do great chips.

vikkimoog · 21/11/2019 19:48

I honestly can't smell a thing from it. it has a filter in the lid which stops it smelling.
The oil filtration thing is good too. You drain it after every use and can reuse the oil about 8 times or so before it gets a bit dark.
really recommend it.

vikkimoog · 21/11/2019 19:49

And anyway, chip shops smell amazing!

mrsbyers · 21/11/2019 19:58

I just use a cast iron casserole dish on the rare occasion we need to deep fry something

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 21/11/2019 20:04

ExH has one. I have to fumigate the kids and their clothes when they come back as they stink of fried food. Their clothes have to go in a separate wash with white vinegar and their hair takes two washes to remove the smell. I think they fry everything and the kids hate it.
But I really fancy proper chips now!

elderlee · 21/11/2019 20:23

I'm not sure if it is the same for all of them but whenever my boyfriend's parents use theirs it makes the whole house smell and my clothes and hair smell too so go for an air fryer if you have to I think they are apparently better!

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 21/11/2019 20:39

We have one that gets occasional use but we stick it on the garden table and run the extension lead out so it doesn't stink the house out!Blush

BobbyGentry · 21/11/2019 20:49

Phillips Air Fat Free Fryer here, use it for chips, samosas, naan bread (cooks dough fast), wraps breads, burger buns, cheese toasted, marinated meat, fresh burgers etc. it’s a bit shabby looking now with over-use but is invaluable.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 21/11/2019 22:11

I use a chip pan. Much nicer.

RollOnNextYear · 21/11/2019 22:51

Thank you. Going to get one in town next week.
The chips in oven today were vile. No one ate them.
Proper. Homemade chips fried yum..

Chip tips! Maris Pipers make (IMO) the best chips - cut them at least half an hour before you want to start cooking and leave them in water. Drain and rinse when needed and lay on clean tea towel to dry. Heat fryer to 120 and cook chips until not quite coloured. Drain on kitchen paper and turn fryer up to 170. Put chips back in and they'll be golden in a minute or two.

Stuckinarut81 · 21/11/2019 23:05

Yep I have one, only because my XP bought me one for Christmas one year 🙄. Every girl’s dream amirite.

It does get used a fair bit, mostly just for chips. I’ve had it oooh probably 6 years and maybe changed the oil 3 times. I am a bit of a slattern though.

stucknoue · 21/11/2019 23:06

I just pick up chips from the chip shop about once a month, far safer than hot fat

Ibizafun · 21/11/2019 23:07

Would def use it for felafel if I had one!
