We've moved house and it's gas appliances there. So got rid of electric oven.
For some reason on the rare occasion I cook chips they don't cook even.. Yes it's probably me. But I just cba with it.

DH said about getting a fryer.. As he also prefers fried chips. I'm not fussed as its prob about a once a month thing anyway.
I think it would be easier anyway and quicker.. Would need one with large capacity but ideally. Not too pricey as wont be used loads..

Altho I'm thinking of deep fried brie as never have that at home.

Oh the calories

This thread is quite old, but if you’re here looking for a fryer to cook chips to perfection, we’ve recently updated our best deep fat fryer page with plenty of great Mumsnetter-approved options that aren't too pricey. We hope you find it useful.

I have a fryer and use it maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Fried food is great but for health reasons we don't make it a habit to cook that way. I'm actually wanting to get an air fryer. I know several people who have one and really like it. They said their chips are brilliant.

steff13 · 21/11/2019 18:06

What about an air fryer?

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 21/11/2019 18:08

Yes we have one!

We use it a few times a month for chips or fried halloumi. We eat healthy the majority of the time so aren’t fussed about the calories and oven chips just aren’t the same

Lllot5 · 21/11/2019 18:08

Oh was just gonna say air fryer. You beat me to it. Friend has one great chips.

Nomorechickens · 21/11/2019 18:09

Are deep fat fryers a complete PITA to clean, or was that just the one I had (and used about 4 times before getting rid of it)

vikkimoog · 21/11/2019 18:10

we have this one
www.amazon.co.uk/Tefal-Oleoclean-Fryer-Portions-Litre/dp/B01I06PEBU/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1BVIR4N6IYI4G&keywords=deep+fat+fryer&sprefix=dee%2Caps%2C155&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1574359662&sr=8-5

it's amazing; very easy to keep clean.
I'd say we use it once or twice a fortnight and we do all sorts in it.
prawn crackers, samosas, chinese dim sum, and of course great chips.
Oven chips can be cooked in the fryer and they're very very nice. properly crispy, not the limp things you get when you oven cook them

pp12 · 21/11/2019 18:10

Yes we still have a deep fat fryer, one for chips, one for Brie, one for scampi and another for churros. But always used with the extracter fan and only twice a month

Vgbeat · 21/11/2019 18:10

You can't beat a deep fat fryer for chips. We have one as I can't stand oven chips don't use it that often but so nice

vikkimoog · 21/11/2019 18:13

chickens have a look at the link i posted, mine still looks like new after 6 months

cccameron · 21/11/2019 18:13

If I fancy chips I just put oil in the wok and use that

RollOnNextYear · 21/11/2019 18:14

Thank you. Will look at air fryers too.
I know u can't beat fried chips.
Everything else we eat is pretty much healthy we just have 1 day a month or sometimes 2 where we are lazy and want carby junk food.

How do air fryers work?
Are they easy to clean?

ShinyGiratina · 21/11/2019 18:17

My former neighbour doesn't use his any more... nor the remnants of his house Sad

I don't know if he was using a basic pan or a safer thermostatic device. He was lucky to get out with fairly minor injuries though.

KnightandDay · 21/11/2019 18:18

We have Tefal air fryer and I have to say, it's great. No oil, food is definitely crispier and it just goes in the dishwasher (probably not supposed to, but we're lazy in my house!)

Afternooninthepark · 21/11/2019 18:23

DH came home with a £20 deep fat fryer the other week. I was dead against it as I thought our house would smell like a chip shop. But it doesn’t and I’m converted now, the chips are delish and I can’t believe we ate the crap oven variety for so long, there is absolutely no comparison, fried chips are the best!

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2019 18:25

We have a fryer that we probably used once a month-ish.

We use it mostly for chips and onion rings.

I can't stand either of those cooked in the oven.

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2019 18:25

*use

LucaFritz · 21/11/2019 18:27

Yuck go for an air fryer they don't make your house stink of dirty fat or splatter everywhere in the vicinity

FizzyIce · 21/11/2019 18:29

I love chips done in a deep fat fryer but they stink and use so much oil so don’t really see the point anymore .
We use an air fryer which is better than oven chips but not quite a delicious as fryer chips

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2019 18:30

Whether your house smells of cooking fat would surely depend on the level of ventilation in your kitchen?

Equally, the splatter would depend on how careful a cook you are?

CokeAndCrispsAndDip · 21/11/2019 18:34

I don't have a deep fat fryer but I do have a chip pan, filled with lard!! So good Grin

vikkimoog · 21/11/2019 18:36

if you use a proper one with a lid there is absoloutely no splatter and zero smell.
How would it splatter with a lid?

combatbarbie · 21/11/2019 18:39

Air fryer is your friend here! I hate oven chips and was dubious on the air fryer but love it now..... Even do my roast potatoes in it now

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2019 18:39

That's what I was wondering vikki, unless perhaps overfilled and the fat too hot?

RozHuntleysStump · 21/11/2019 18:39

Actifry ftw
