Your child on their 5th birthday receives a kit and wakes up at 5.30 the following day in excitement wanting to play with it.

Do you:

A) Make them follow the instructions to build the kit

Or

B) Allow them to go ‘free-style’ which is their choice?

B

(That's if C) make them go back to bed didn't work.)

JoyceDivision · 20/11/2019 10:45

A small kit - freestyle

A larger kit - stick to the instructions!

Or get the creative box so they can make what they want!

Celebelly · 20/11/2019 10:46

I think it depends if doing it freestyle will meant it can't ever be done the 'proper way'. If it can be put back to normal to be done properly another time then i would just let them crack on. If it meant that the kit and what it was meant to be would be rendered useless, then I'd try substitute for normal Lego blocks and try with the kit another time.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/11/2019 10:46

Their choice. Although we have a separate box of Lego for freestyling.

DelurkingAJ · 20/11/2019 10:46

B) you can always take Lego apart and rebuild!

Clarityneeded · 20/11/2019 10:46

It’s a small kit.

Depends if its a bit of a "legacy" kit or a here and now enjoy kit and whether you mind him/if hes likely to lose the peices whilst freestyling.

PsychosonicCindy · 20/11/2019 10:48

B let them enjoy it however they want! It's supposed to be fun don't suck all the joy out of it!

NannyR · 20/11/2019 10:49

B - it's their present to play with as they want to, however I would save the instructions and suggest building the model, maybe with an adult another time (just because I love building Lego sets!!)

Notsurehowtofixit · 20/11/2019 10:50

B. The other option would never even cross my mind.

Pinkflipflop85 · 20/11/2019 10:52

It's a in our house!

If you want to freestyle you use the box of random mixed lego.

Ohyesiam · 20/11/2019 10:55

B on a tray to keep the bits together/ separate from the other largo you have.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/11/2019 10:56

Reluctantly free style, but in a separate room to the random stuff. I open the box and keep the instructions separate so one day we may be able to sort it out again.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/11/2019 10:57

B because I'm not a monster. They're 5. It's designed to be put together any which way and taken apart and put back together ad infinitum.

If they want to follow the instructions and make the thing in the picture on the box, I'd help them do that too, at a more civilised time.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/11/2019 10:57

When I am rich I am going to have a Lego room.

prawnsword · 20/11/2019 11:00

B

Stop stifling their imagination

GreenyEye · 20/11/2019 11:09

I would do A with them first, then let them dismantle it and do whatever they liked.

lau888 · 20/11/2019 11:14

B, for sure. If they want to play free-style, it is their toy and their choice.

I'd be surprised they didn't want to use the instructions for the "first build" and then mix it in with other Lego later on. But, it's not their toy if they're not allowed to play with it the way they'd actually enjoy it.

ColdRainAgain · 20/11/2019 11:21

C send them back to bed. We do enough early waking in this house without Lego at 5.30.
I did 5.30 for years. We have got it back to 6.30.

Then B.

User7429001 · 20/11/2019 11:25

Don:t give the kit til later when you can help with the build. First build with kit is always per instructions after that it's freestyle.

Age 5 with a small kit B.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/11/2019 11:31

well that was hilarious Hmm

Keep it separate from the other Lego for now and allow a bit of imaginative play before 'the big build'?

Whatsnewpussyhat · 20/11/2019 11:33

Half 5! Whichever one shuts them up so I can sleep more, and I love lego.

Small set for a 5 year old, they can do what they want.

Kelsoooo · 20/11/2019 11:51

@HelenePMitchell1998 what the actual fuck is wrong with you?
