Visa to Australia on compassionate grounds

AlmostAway · 18/11/2019 18:07

Posting here for traffic in hope of ideas.

My SIL, DH sister, was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer about four months ago. She has been given just three to six months. It's all very sad. However, DH is beside himself because she lives in Australia. He is an Irish passport holder, but has been asked to pay AU$24k for the tourist visa.

Does anyone have any idea how he might be able to visit her on compassionate grounds? I have checked other visa types to no avail.

Thanks in advance

Unpaid child maintenance perhaps?

AlwaysCheddar · 19/11/2019 07:08

The only dodgy thing here is the op’s dh and the website!

stripeypillowcase · 19/11/2019 07:11

a friend of mine needed to pay a deposit of a few thousand $.
but they were not eastern european and it was 20 years ago.
money was held in a secure named account and released after friend returned.

MyOtherProfile · 19/11/2019 07:11

I really thought the k was a typo!

Lovemenorca · 19/11/2019 07:22

It will 100% not be current crime related ie a crime that he is committing
As then it would be a case that criminals can pay themselves out of their crimes! More to the post - If the Australian government knows he committing a crime - then why the heck doesn’t the UK and he’s arrested!

It will be due to non crime related issue OR criminal record

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 19/11/2019 07:24

PP saying the sister could fly to Singapore as a "nearby" country. If she's on the east that is a full 12-14hr flight for both parties! Even from Perth it's 5+hrs.

Also, if this is a begging/scam post, then OP massively overreached with the 24k. She could probably have got away with the cost of new passports and the $20 visa from a few people.

My hope is that OP was panicking and has now gone away to take a fresh look at the websites, as well as some sterner questioning of her husband (why he's not sorting his own visa I don't know...).

AlternativePerspective · 19/11/2019 07:32

OP has been posting here since 2013. Not regularly but still... and while posting previously doesn’t equals not scammer, previous posts are fairly enocuous and not really indicative of someone on the make.

ConFusion360 · 19/11/2019 07:42

I'm not surprised that she hasn't been back. There have been some pretty insulting assumptions made.

UhareFouxisci · 19/11/2019 07:44

it is possible that your dh shares a name and possibly also a date of birth with someone on a "watch" list.

if he didn't make it clear this was a sorry term visit- eg if he put "unknown" for the date he would be leaving, then he might be treated as an immigrant rather than a visitor.

Has he actually spoken to the Global Service Centre (+61 2 61960196)?

spacepyramid · 19/11/2019 07:57

British Army housing. No Irish contractors allowed during the Troubles - which was ridiculous but those were the rules.

Beveren · 19/11/2019 08:11

If Hellofromtheotherside is right, it sounds as if this may simply be a case of confusion with the fact that some visas need you to demonstrate that you have £24K in savings - which in turn means he probably applied for the wrong visa, as it wouldn't be necessary for a short stay.

Fantail2018 · 19/11/2019 08:22

Could be unpaid child support - extended family member had to get another member of family to pay off debts here (NZ) to be able to enter country to attend a funeral.
Has he visited Australia in the past...he may have a kid there.

UhareFouxisci · 19/11/2019 08:27

only just spotted that short term got autocorrected to sorry term which may have been confusing

weymouthswanderingmermaid · 19/11/2019 09:14

I wonder what the OP is doing now regarding this? It's pretty clear something dodgy is going on, I'm very curious as to what.
The stress of a terminally ill sister in law would make it easy for mistakes to be made, I'm sure.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 19/11/2019 09:24

PP saying the sister could fly to Singapore as a "nearby" country. If she's on the east that is a full 12-14hr flight for both parties! Even from Perth it's 5+hrs

Sydney to Auckland is about 3 hours I believe.

I have actually done all of the following: Perth to Sydney took 2.5 actual flying time, though the timetabled flight was longer. It took 7 hours from Sydney to Singapore and about 4 from SIngapore to Perth.

Winesalot · 19/11/2019 10:15

Whoa! Havingtonamechange. You must have had quite the wind behind you. Perth to Sydney is usually much longer than 2.5 flying time everytime I have done it. Hmm

Besides which, obviously he still needs a visa to land in Perth too.

ememem84 · 19/11/2019 10:24

I thought the flight from Sydney to Auckland was longer.... never done it myself but had looked at doing it The last time we were visiting family in nz. I naively thought we’d have loads of time to do a short weekend hop to Aussie....

That said I’be never known anyone need to pay $24k to get into Australia. Maybe it’s a permanent residency he’s looking at by mistake?

weymouthswanderingmermaid · 19/11/2019 10:39

@havingtochangeusernameagain it's 4hrs 10min according to Google. I did it many years ago and it was far longer than 2.5hrs, it was my first real moment of understanding of just how vast Australia is!

PhoneLock · 19/11/2019 10:42

Perth to Sydney is usually much longer than 2.5 flying time everytime I have done it.

Usually? The plane would need to average just over Mach 1 to do it in that time.

That's unlikely since the demise of Concorde.

spacepyramid · 19/11/2019 10:45

I thought the flight from Sydney to Auckland was longer.

Sydney to Christchurch is 3 1/2 hours, I assume Auckland is much the same.

katkit · 19/11/2019 10:48

you don't have to pay 24k to visit Australia. you just don't.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 19/11/2019 10:51

(Apologies, I changed what I was going to type mid sentence so my flying times are a bit misleading! The main point was that Singapore is not just a short hop away from Australia)

Lochroy · 19/11/2019 10:52

OP has gone?

Winesalot · 19/11/2019 11:08

I am with you there @PhoneLock!

As I said, it must have been some wind to do it in that time! Makes a mockery of calling it the red eye if that was the case. I wish it took 2.5 hours!!

Haworthia · 19/11/2019 11:13

What a strange thread.

I’d be amazed if it wasn’t a scam website. A family member got scammed when they tried to apply for an Indian visa. Those fake sites are ten a penny.
