Visa to Australia on compassionate grounds

Posting here for traffic in hope of ideas.

My SIL, DH sister, was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer about four months ago. She has been given just three to six months. It's all very sad. However, DH is beside himself because she lives in Australia. He is an Irish passport holder, but has been asked to pay AU$24k for the tourist visa.

Does anyone have any idea how he might be able to visit her on compassionate grounds? I have checked other visa types to no avail.

Thanks in advance

I hope OP is now asking her DH about any shady dealings or debts left behind in Australia.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 18/11/2019 21:39

Sorry, I was being flippant there. My friend's husband did exactly this. He didn't pay 24,000 dollars, euros or GBP for the privilege though.

ShiveringCoyote · 18/11/2019 21:40

So you immediately jump to a thought of maybe he was in the IRA? Not every Irish passport holder is Irish born. What an ignorant comment.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/11/2019 21:41

I don’t think OP is coming back 🤔

spacepyramid · 18/11/2019 21:47

No I don't, but the Australian government list it as a potential concern which could be the case if there is mistaken identity

'you are or have been a member of a group or organisation, or had or have an association with a person, group or organisation that the Minister reasonably suspects of being involved in criminal conduct'

I think you are being paranoid about this. Clearly there is something going on and it's one concern the Australians could have about Irish people. When we lived there (when I was a child) nobody who was Irish was allowed to work on the road we lived in because of government security concerns.

Gallivespian · 18/11/2019 22:09

@spacepyramid, your posts say an awful lot about your prejudices. The OP’s DH is about as likely to be in the IRA as a random UK poster’s DH is to be fighting with Isis.

theemmadilemma · 18/11/2019 22:11

SIL is in Aus. Only reason for a £24k required seems to be unpaid gov bills.

OP won't be back, she's just found out the issue he was hiding...

Bartlet · 18/11/2019 22:15

To the poster who made the bonkers terrorist insinuation.

If the guy is on some terrorist watch list, why would they charge him thousands of dollars for a visa? Do they become less dangerous if they’ve forked out more money?

ShiveringCoyote · 18/11/2019 22:31

Criminal conduct could be anything. Drug trafficking, bank robbery whatever.

Where did you live in Ireland that no Irish person could work on your road?

ShiveringCoyote · 18/11/2019 22:32

Your connection is about as ignorant as linking a random Asian man to the Rotherham gang.

Cruddles · 18/11/2019 22:39

So people are saying he's paramilitary but the Australian government is ok with and will let it slide for 24k? Yes, that makes complete sense. Is there a sliding scale depending on your organisation? Starting at Basque Separatists at 5k, up to FARQ members for 50k

Gallivespian · 18/11/2019 22:50

@Cruddles Grin

ConFusion360 · 18/11/2019 22:56

According to this website the cost is 20 Australian dollars.

I don't see an Irish flag on the list of countries that that particular visa applies to.

sonjadog · 18/11/2019 22:58

I think the OP was hoping posters would offer her money. That or a guide to entering Australia by swimming over from PNG.

notsosummerwinterholiday · 18/11/2019 23:05

@sonjadog I thought the same thing. You could probably google the swimming guide

AlternativePerspective · 18/11/2019 23:19

He’s lying. I see that from previous posts he’s quite a bit older than you. What do you know about his life before you got together?

IWantADifferentName · 18/11/2019 23:28

LMAO 😂

trixiebelden77 · 18/11/2019 23:28

Doctor looking after your sil can write a letter requesting an emergency visa be granted for compassionate reasons.

The only time I’ve met opposition for this has been when the applicant has a criminal record or the person they’re visiting is in Australia illegally (ie has overstayed their visa).

Cohle · 18/11/2019 23:31

Seems like a begging thread that didn't go the way OP hoped.

prawnsword · 19/11/2019 00:54

We have so many Irish backpackers here & can assure you they haven’t paid 24 grand for their visa. Someone is having you on.

Why can’t he just buy a plane ticket & come on over ? When I fly to London I just buy a ticket, I don’t go applying for a tourist visa.

There is no way the Australian Government is charging UK citizens 24K for tourist visas.

This sounds like a scam. Unfortunately many shady sharks do scam people by charging them exorbitant fees to just process the same forms you can do yourself cheaply online.

IAmNotAWitch · 19/11/2019 00:58

Someone is lying.

BritInUS1 · 19/11/2019 01:02

As others have said - either it's a scam, it's a case of mistaken identity or he is hiding something

There is no way to get to Australia without a visa (electronic or otherwise)

DeRigueurMortis · 19/11/2019 01:24

Well there is something off kilter here but goodness knows what it is.

Most likely a scam - which the OP doesn't seem to want to recognise Confused or her OH is lying.

However the comments about a connection with Irish paramilitary organisations are equally batshit (and racist).

You don't get to "pay" extra for a visa based on a criminal background. You just get refused.

It's a relatively cheap and straightforward process to get a visa to Australia.

bobbinsblue · 19/11/2019 02:22

What other passports does he hold? This makes no sense, have you seen his application?

BillHadersNewWife · 19/11/2019 02:41

Not possible. I paid WAY less than that to apply for residency here!
