Visa to Australia on compassionate grounds

Posting here for traffic in hope of ideas.

My SIL, DH sister, was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer about four months ago. She has been given just three to six months. It's all very sad. However, DH is beside himself because she lives in Australia. He is an Irish passport holder, but has been asked to pay AU$24k for the tourist visa.

Does anyone have any idea how he might be able to visit her on compassionate grounds? I have checked other visa types to no avail.

Thanks in advance

OP, post screenshots of the communication you've received. Check your visa is actually real. If you applied for all on a scam cloned site, you might be trying to travel with a fake visa.

Celebelly · 18/11/2019 20:28

Yes I think OP is long gone now and has clearly been spun a yarn. Hopefully this thread has made her realise that either her DH is inept at using a website or he's been telling fibs.

AUD$24,000 to visit on a visa? Yeah right!

Blueemeraldagain · 18/11/2019 20:35

It cost my Swedish SIL AUD$7,700 to get permanent residency and that was with extra police checks, health stuff and others.

Something is definitely up.

@AlmostAway
My great aunt in Australia died on a Friday and I decided to fly over there for her funeral. -as you do- I booked tickets on the Sunday, I flew from Birmingham airport on the Monday, when I arrived at the desk to check in I was asked about a visa, I didn't have one so the airline arranged one there and then. It cost about £20, I flew with Emirates and although my business class flight wasn't cheap it was a damn sight less than 24k.
There's something really strange and maybe quite sinister about this.

justilou1 · 18/11/2019 20:46

I am Australian. There are literally thousands of fake companies like this charging whatever the f they want to set up dodgy visas for poor saps willing to pay, unfortunately. One check shows that pay over the odds to get placed above the genuine Australian Govt website on google’s search engine and have “official”-looking, schminck websites. Bloody parasites.

spacepyramid · 18/11/2019 20:48

I'm surprised that this thread is still here TBH.
OP it is very easy to get scammed, the sites do look extremely government like.

Ginger1982 · 18/11/2019 20:53

Come on OP you don't seriously believe it costs £24k for a visa do you???? 🙄

carrots555 · 18/11/2019 20:54

Other theories:

OP was using the wrong currency on the website, one of those currencies where a bottle of water costs 1000 or something

OP or brother, whoever did the app, picked the wrong nationality from the list and the cost is higher for more perceived risky nationalities

managedmis · 18/11/2019 20:57

How old is he? If he's under 35 he could get a working holiday visa

Just call the embassy, OP. But make.sure you Google the number, don't use anything on the website you've been looking at.

It's one of three possible situations, but none of us can tell you which. The embassy will be able to. Either a) it's a scam, and he can get a visa normally like everyone else, b) he's lying about his past and his visa has been denied for criminal convictions, or c) there's something up at the embassy end that only they know about.

Just make a call!

Elodie2019 · 18/11/2019 21:00

There's more to this than the OP is letting on.

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 18/11/2019 21:01

If all else fails he could speak to a visa agent in Australia. They would probably be a cost but certainly nothing on the scale you’ve quoted. I know one if you want to PM me.

ShiveringCoyote · 18/11/2019 21:02

Bit of a jump there @spacepyramid . What on earth makes you think of links to paramilitaries? Where did you deduce that from?

spacepyramid · 18/11/2019 21:03

He's Irish and could have a case of mistaken identity and so be refused - it's one of the grounds for refusal. It could be anything though, something odd is going on with either a scam or something.

Butterisbest · 18/11/2019 21:04

Shivering because he's Irish?

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/11/2019 21:05

If this is real then there is something he is not telling you OP.

Ellisandra · 18/11/2019 21:10

Another vote for him not being honest, or a mistaken identity issue.

ShiveringCoyote · 18/11/2019 21:16

Wow. Nice bit of anti Irish sentiment.

SKMCR · 18/11/2019 21:21

As someone with Irish and UK passports who travels to Australia to visit every 2 to 3 years i can honestly say you are being scammed or something is up. I've never had to pay for visas and get the ETA which is free. Its usually pretty quick too.

@Nonstopbuttmachine & they would be charged extra for this because? (& I don't have a sense of humour bypass I think your comment is way beyond - helpful???)

spacepyramid · 18/11/2019 21:32

Nothing anti-Irish at all, I've lived there myself and love the place. Being realistic there is something funny going on and it has to be something significant for the Australians to make that much fuss, everybody shares a name with somebody and not everybody is squeaky clean - the Australian government are obviously very concerned to say it will cost 24k to give him a visa.
