I identify as a child and therefore demand entry to softplay/nursery/baby swimming lessons

My eldest is mixed race, I know she has been 'lucky' as has had very little bullying due to her heritage but a good friend she met at university had a very different childhood experience. Apologies for the DM link but she sent me this, how can someone choose their heritage. And wtaf about an artist getting funding meant for those from black backgrounds as he identifys as a 'born again African'?

Where does it end? I identify as a doctor so demand I be treated as one including being employed as one as it's against my human rights to discriminate against me.

Aibu to think that this is complete madness?

Should have adjusted the pension to make sure that it reflected the lower average lifetime earnings for women, too.

Paddy1234 · 17/11/2019 12:32

My daughter has identified as 'intelligent' and has applied to Oxford. When can I sue them when they reject her and her two soft A levels?
😂
(She did it as a giggle)

You can form an association (e.g. university student society) and restrict it to people with a particular protected characteristic, but if the protected characteristic is race you are not allowed to base this on skin colour.

YANBU . It's madness.

This is interesting Pencils. So in what sense is the membership restricted? Race seems to me not to be an objective concept at all. How do these associations decide who can join?

PencilsInSpace · 17/11/2019 12:46

You can base it on nationality or ethnic or national origin, just not skin colour. Race in the EA includes all of these.

www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/section/9

TriangularRatbag · 17/11/2019 12:59

And presumably all of those things (with the exception of nationality, which is a legally objective fact) would have to be matters for self identification.

Good on DD Grin

It is ridiculous to suggest a “where does it end” scenario based on a few stories of people doing a certain thing. Some rare individuals decide to do some pretty ridiculous things, that doesn’t mean we are on a slippery slope to everyone doing the same thing.

People might have some very good reasons for identifying as they do. If it doesn’t impact on your life, why the hell would you decide they shouldn’t be allowed to do it.

And if you want to identify as a child OP, go right ahead. Challenge all these places and take on the fight. Nobody is stopping you.

TriangularRatbag · 17/11/2019 13:57

*I Identify by my Prussian heritage .

But this is a very poor analogy. It's actually possible to prove your entitlement to the Prussian jewels by birth and marriage records. How does anyone prove they're Asian?

The problem is not a few people doing a certain thing, it's the imposition of a post modern philosophy that does not recognise the consequences of material reality.

Tensixtysix · 17/11/2019 14:26

I identify as a Zombie. People can be so cruel to us zombies. Shooting at us for no reason. We only want to play...

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/11/2019 14:33

@Tensixtysix - you should get together with @Paddy1234's DD. She's got the brains...

I'm busily trying to identify with a cat and curl up in front of the fire, but my identification is so successful that my dog is trying to chase me.

NarwhalsNarwhals · 17/11/2019 14:39

Everywhere has always asked what you identify as on the ethnicity bits of forms though because lots of people don't really tick one box, or you might biologically be from one group but have been raised in a completely different one, or you might identify more with one parents ethnicity than the other.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 17/11/2019 14:47

I bloody hate this post truth Emperor's New Clothes world we live in. How I long for a new Age of Enlightenment, for science, for a new Rousseau. Truth matters.

tillytrotter1 · 17/11/2019 14:52

I identify as a good driver and want Seb Vettal's seat at Ferrari!

Sh05 · 17/11/2019 14:58

Soon criminals will start identifying as children under 10 in the courts and with cps. No case, defendant too young!

Symptomless · 17/11/2019 16:10

So mixed race person identifying as mixed race is the same as adult criminal identifying as a 10 year old?????????

Bunkerlife · 17/11/2019 16:12

This is quite the most sickening story of this ilk I have seen yet, you only have to google his name to come across the most stomach churning details about him and his "new family"

“I felt like a woman!” reports Stefonknee of his “adopted dad’s” penis inserted man-on-man into his “six year old girl” rectum at the Oasis swingers club. “I was surprised I didn’t think I was going to be pregnant, I was so much a girl. I actually have an erection right now from it so I’m just going to pull my dress down a little bit,” he told the journalists who were covering his journey to girlhood.

koshkat · 17/11/2019 16:15

MissMarple I know. This is where we are headed as everyone embraces identity politics without thinking any of it through.

earlydoors42 · 17/11/2019 16:27

As a PP said - you can't get disability benefits by self-identifying as disabled. You have to prove there are objective things wrong with you.

Yet my employer asked me whether I "identify as" disabled... I have a physical disability, so if they asked whether I have a disability (or if I am disabled), I would happily say yes. I am less happy saying yes I identify as disabled. It isn't part of my identity. My daughter has a different disability and feels the same way. We are both disabled as per Equality Act 2010... but we don't identify as disabled.
