to be outraged by Nativity casting as 'Innkeeper's wife'!!!

1000 replies

PIPERHELLO · 15/11/2019 09:26

Daughter (6) has been cast as 'someone's wife' in the Nativity play at school. 'Innkeeper's wife' to be precise.

Err...hello!?

This is fucking not OK! In 2019, to be identified as 'someone's wife'.

Normally I am pretty relaxed about all things school, and I certainly feel sorry for he teachers' workloads, but come on people!? This is 2019 - no woman should be identified by her relationship to a man!? SURELY!

Itching to call them out on this. Itching!

OP posts:
Clawdy · 15/11/2019 12:59

I'm waiting for someone to trot out the Urban Myth about the inn-keeper saying "Come on in! There's plenty of room! " Grin

Bodyposiftw · 15/11/2019 12:59

In 2019 it's not on. But the play was set when it was different. You can't make up feminist stuff that didn't take place then, that would be historically inaccurate.

Wheredidigowrongggggg · 15/11/2019 12:59

Pastel yellow - I would be. Friend, or inn worker, another inn keeper, or anything that wasn’t gender specific and outdated. Even a fucking lobster.

Endspeciesism · 15/11/2019 13:00

”Not so bad. My son was usually livestock.”

Animals are not objects, livestock is an ignorant term.

Wheredidigowrongggggg · 15/11/2019 13:00

Bodyposi - I wish someone would cite biblical historical accuracy to the fucking lobsters.

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2019 13:00

“that would be historically inaccurate.“
Please tell me you’re joking.......

Courtney555 · 15/11/2019 13:02

And people wonder why Mumsnet is often a laughing stock

Next you'll be complaining about Mary being pregnant by another man...

Grin

OP you're being an absolute div. Get over your deliberate non problem you look ridiculous.

NoSquirrels · 15/11/2019 13:02

To be honest, I always thought Mary was the worst role for non-speaking sexist stereotyping anyway. She gets no say in anything much, from the scene where Gabriel tells her what to do, to all the rest of the scenes where she has to put up and shut up as all the other folk interfere with her birth and post-natal recovery, traipsing through. Thank God there were no kettles in the stable, or they'd probably have expected her to make all the cups of tea. At least if Sandra had been on hand she could've had a stern word with all the incomers to leave poor Mary alone!

Wishiwasincornwall · 15/11/2019 13:03

Yes you are completely right. Why stop there? You should suggest they ditch the star and use a satnav, the 3 wise men should be renamed the 3 wise non gender specific people, the council should be providing a hostel place instead of having to bed down in a barn and they just have to call out God for getting Mary pregnant without consent. I mean because this is 2019 after all. Hmm

ezbem · 15/11/2019 13:03

I was always Mary and my friend was a sheep? Yabu it's actually ridiculous

Weirdwonders · 15/11/2019 13:04

I doubt the innkeeper’s wife would have had any stake in owning the property so it’s right that the part is named like that. She probably would have BEEN his property in the same way the inn was. Could you swap out your woke brain for your critical thinking brain and explain that to your daughter rather than trying to rewrite history? It’s a role in a play, not a role in real life.

Anotherlongdrive · 15/11/2019 13:04

The pps dd isnt an inn keeper.

She has been cast in a play that acts out something set 2000+ years ago.

She would have indeed been the ink keepers wife. That's the part she playing. Wife on Inn keeper, from 2000 years ago.

flowery · 15/11/2019 13:04

"You can't make up feminist stuff that didn't take place then, that would be historically inaccurate"

How is casting a girl as the Innkeeper "feminist stuff"?

I assume you've requested your DC school to not do anything resembling a traditional nativity play at all, if historical accuracy in children's Christmas productions is important to you...?

drudgewithagrudge · 15/11/2019 13:05

For heaven's sake. All it says in the Bible is that Mary had Jesus and " layed him in a manger because there was no room in the inn"
Doesn't even say there was a stable. In those days people shared their houses with their animals.

Innkeeper with or without a wife don't get a mention.

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2019 13:05

Can anyone explain why they are so outraged at the idea of the innkeeper’s wife having a name, or being one of two innkeepers? What is so upsetting about the idea?

summersherewishiwasnt · 15/11/2019 13:06

Wow get a grip. Yab r

myolivetree · 15/11/2019 13:06

Jeez. Were there Brussels sprouts, lampposts, presents, aliens, Father Christmas, singing donkeys? We're talking about modern day nativities FFS

They are a total hotbed of 'made up'.

It's not Mary Beard doing a historical documentary!!!! And she wouldn't stand for it. The "inkeepers wife" would have a bloody name.

flowery · 15/11/2019 13:07

"Can anyone explain why they are so outraged at the idea of the innkeeper’s wife having a name, or being one of two innkeepers? What is so upsetting about the idea?"

"Historical accuracy" innit?

Grin
pelirocco123 · 15/11/2019 13:07

In a world where there are so many things to cause outrage , Innkeepers wife is not one of them

I love the idea that this story has been played out in much the same form for hundreds and years. OP have you not thought to be outraged that a woman gave birth in this story? , Or that a poor donkey had to carry a heavy load , or that even social services aren't concerned about the baby's sleeping arrangements

flowery · 15/11/2019 13:08

Dangerous feminist stuff, having a girl open a door and say "No room at the inn"...

MrsFrTedCrilly · 15/11/2019 13:09

How about having a conversation with the school if you feel so strongly about it?
A conversation, not a hysterical and aggressive “calling out”, I really mean this comment kindly as I do agree that giving these titles to small children perpetuates gender inequality.
Perhaps as a PP suggested ”Innkeeper” would be more appropriate title for any child playing the role.
By not voicing how you feel in an appropriate manner to the school you are in effect complacent about the everyday sexism you are complaining about.

greenlavender · 15/11/2019 13:10

Ridiculous. It is an actual role. It's not as if the Innkeeper has a name.

KarmaStar · 15/11/2019 13:10

The idiotic post of the week.

summersherewishiwasnt · 15/11/2019 13:10

@Courtney555 “you’re being an absolute div” Grin. Love it.
Thinking it’s out dated as an idea is one thing, but “outrage“ .... ok. Then.

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2019 13:10

I’m loving all this outrage about “rewriting history”!!!!

My ds was once, to his outrage, a dancing star because he was small, beautiful and an excellent dancer. He danced in and out of the stable before taking up his position on a chair to twinkle throughout the rest of the performance. Which is a pretty egregious rewriting of astronomy.....
