For the last few days I’ve had this awful feeling like something terrible is about to happen, but I don’t know why! I’ve got a few worries I guess like everyone but they’re nothing life threatening. So what does this mean? It’s pretty much constant and the only way I can describe it is like deep, paralysing fear as though I’m in terrible danger. Is this how anxiety as a medical condition presents itself? Should I see my GP? I don’t want them to think I’m being ridiculous when I explain I feel like something really bad is about to happen when rationally I know it’s probably not. What’s wrong with me? I’m starting to think stupid things like perhaps I’m having a premonition even though I don’t really believe in things like that. It’s horrible.

You poor thing. When I get exactly those symptoms it's usually the start of a panic attack, caused by anxiety.

Sometimes it comes out of nowhere and when I get any of those feelings I panic that it's going to be an awful panic attack so I then get one anyway due to racing heart etc.

I went to the doctor and I have found propranolol really helpful - it's a beta blocker so may even be the one your doctor has given you.

Now when I feel incredibly anxious I take one and it stops the physical symptoms (palpitations, dizziness) long enough or me to manage the anxiety and come out the other end without having and full blown attack.

Your description is a word I've been searching for since I first had one - doom.

It's the same feeling as nearly falling down the stairs, going into an exam, your other half saying "we need to talk" etc. Except it last longer and spirals.

It's brilliant when you find out that's what it is because then you can try a few ways of managing it, including beta blockers. I hope they work for you, fingers crossed Thanks

Honestly, I have had bouts of this for about 20 years on and off and I am still alive and well, there is very little wrong with me (mild hypertension and the aches and pains that come with getting older and that's about it.)
Honestly, telling an anxious, unhappy person that they are probably about to explode and drop dead is really not helping.
