To ask what this overwhelming sense of doom is

For the last few days I’ve had this awful feeling like something terrible is about to happen, but I don’t know why! I’ve got a few worries I guess like everyone but they’re nothing life threatening. So what does this mean? It’s pretty much constant and the only way I can describe it is like deep, paralysing fear as though I’m in terrible danger. Is this how anxiety as a medical condition presents itself? Should I see my GP? I don’t want them to think I’m being ridiculous when I explain I feel like something really bad is about to happen when rationally I know it’s probably not. What’s wrong with me? I’m starting to think stupid things like perhaps I’m having a premonition even though I don’t really believe in things like that. It’s horrible.

Does an ecg show things that could mean you’re about to have a heart attack? Meaning if it was ok then that’s probably not it?

I get this quite often, it does pass though.

The only time the feeling was ‘justified’ was years ago when walking with my parents, I had an awful feeling that something bad was going to happen, my mum tripped over and cut her foot and the feeling immediately went away- probably a coincidence but I’ve never forgotten it.

FairyDogMother11 · 14/11/2019 20:57

I used to get that feeling before my period showed, but it only used to be the 24 hours before!

cocomelon23 · 14/11/2019 20:57

It's a well known sign of a heart attack.

thelikelylass · 14/11/2019 20:57

I used to get this when I was tired and felt under the weather and a very wise much older friend told me the American's have a term for it - free floating anxiety. Once she told me that I can't remember ever having it again!
She made sense of it for me.

Ohfrigginghellers · 14/11/2019 20:58

Hope you're ok

Doodoobear · 14/11/2019 20:58

I used to get this the day before my period was due in my 20's, it's gradually increased (now 40) until it's 4/5 days, and then goes on the first day of my period.
However as others have suggested you should get checked out by the GP, especially in light of the ECG etc. Hope all's well.

rosewool · 14/11/2019 20:58

Do you drink a lot of coffee or energy drinks ?
I can't drink coffee because it makes me feel panicky and anxious.

Simkin · 14/11/2019 21:00

I mean honestly if you're not feeling a bit anxious about the state of things you're not really paying attention imo

Nicecupofcoco · 14/11/2019 21:00

An ecg can pick up irregular heart beat or arrhythmia, I think it can show if you have recently had a heart attack but not that you may be about to have one.... Think further tests would be needed, I may be wrong though. If you've had a good ecg recently then that's a really good sign.

Wide0penSpace · 14/11/2019 21:01

It could be hormonal - I get this when I'm due on.

Nectarines · 14/11/2019 21:01

That was a symptom of PND for me

Slappadabass · 14/11/2019 21:07

Ignore the stupid comments, it's really not appropriate on a thread where someone is genuinely concerned for their health!!

Definitely see your GP. If it gets any worse then call NHS helpline to see if you can get a emergency or out of hours appointment.

I suffer with anxiety and have this feeling a lot, it can be unbearable, so it could be that but if you have had problems with your heart I would definitely get yourself checked over asap.

YouTube have lots of meditation, breathing technique, mindfulness videos that might help you.

Winterwoollies · 14/11/2019 21:07

Jesus, OP. You poor thing, any anxiety you have must be through the roof now. Some of these replies are mental. No one here is able to diagnose you, so I’d pop on to see a doctor but please don’t worry if you have no other physical symptoms. I have health anxiety and I get the feeling of doom just before my anxiety will flare up. It’s manageable, doesn’t last long, and comes and goes with no obvious triggers. However, people here seem to be delighting in worrying you. Call the docs tomorrow, double check your ECG results and maybe make an appointment to see a doc or nurse. In the meantime, have a lovely walk, lay off caffeine and maybe listen to a nice audiobook in the bath to relax. Don’t panic if you feel a bit palpitation-y, anxiety can cause and sustain that. Xxx

littlebillie · 14/11/2019 21:09

Please see your GP I had this and it ended with a panic attack. Day later I found out I had a very serious health condition.

Your body is talking to you please listen

Nicecupofcoco · 14/11/2019 21:10

I really don't think telling op she may be about to have a heart attack is the best idea. Op you sound really worried and anxious, as somebody who has had anxiety, feelings of doom, and pushed for lots of tests on my heart due to health anxiety and palpitations, missed beats etc, I think it's much more likely to be anxiety. It can play havoc with your heart, when mine was at its worst I was having fast beats, missed beats every day, I kept feeling like my heart had stopped then would thud, it was insane! Nothing concerning found though.
If the doctor hasn't got back to you then it's really likely to be nothing, but you could follow it up for peace of mind. Eptopic beats can be normal, I was told most people have them but just don't feel them.
I'm not saying don't get checked out, but please don't worry yourself more by thinking the worst.

Nanalisa60 · 14/11/2019 21:10

It’s because the worlds going to hell in a handbag!!

I try and not think to hard it just upsets me!!

Chocolateandchats · 14/11/2019 21:11

I get this too OP, in my case it’s anxiety building. I make a conscious effort to do only what I have to and give myself time alone to process everything that’s going on-it usually happens when I’m feeling overwhelmed.
Do you have a tight chest? Dizziness? Light headed? Increased heart rate? Do you feel short of breath? A heart attack rarely has only one symptom and the symptoms are usually physical. Do you have a friend you could call who might be able to make you feel calmer? Call 111 and consider self-referring for mental health services, I believe it’s available pretty much nationwide.

gamerchick · 14/11/2019 21:13

It's classic anxiety. This particular symptom is one of why I take beta blockers. That and the trembly, washing machine stomach that goes with it.

See your GP.

Nicecupofcoco · 14/11/2019 21:14

Forgot to say as soon as I got the test results back from cardiology, and was given all clear, my palpitations stopped like magic! Grin so just worrying about my heart was causing all my crazy heart symptoms. Anxiety can cause so many physical symptoms too.

PuppyMonkey · 14/11/2019 21:14

How old are you OP? You’re not menopausal by any chance?

marshmallowss · 14/11/2019 21:15

Honestly the only time I have felt truly like something big was going to happen and I was awfully worried and anxious about it. Felt like something terrible was on the horizon. I found out I was pregnant. Was probably just a massive hormone change.
I have had similar feelings since, but nothing quite so intense.

Trewser · 14/11/2019 21:17

OP, its anxiety. Don't listen to all the stupid comments about Brexit and heart attacks. It's a horrible feeling, i remember it well. Try to do something relaxing, perhaps a glass of wine and a funny tv show, or a nice bath.

londonrach · 14/11/2019 21:17

Please go and see the gp as this a symptom not to be ignored. Hopefully you feel better soon and ignore the idiots making political points. You need to look after yourself x

MeAndHimAndHer · 14/11/2019 21:19

It is a well recognised early symptom of heart attack for women. It should be taken seriously. If you have any other symptoms at all, ie. you feel in any way unwell, I would seek medical advice. Probably via 111 initially but do not be surprised if they arrange for an ambulance. I don’t mean to frighten you but as you have recently had an ecg suggesting cardiac concerns and are now experiencing a common symptom of cardiac issues, it will be taken seriously. Hope all turns out well and it is neither heart nor anxiety related.
