To ask what this overwhelming sense of doom is

For the last few days I’ve had this awful feeling like something terrible is about to happen, but I don’t know why! I’ve got a few worries I guess like everyone but they’re nothing life threatening. So what does this mean? It’s pretty much constant and the only way I can describe it is like deep, paralysing fear as though I’m in terrible danger. Is this how anxiety as a medical condition presents itself? Should I see my GP? I don’t want them to think I’m being ridiculous when I explain I feel like something really bad is about to happen when rationally I know it’s probably not. What’s wrong with me? I’m starting to think stupid things like perhaps I’m having a premonition even though I don’t really believe in things like that. It’s horrible.

How old are you? Could it be the menopause, I had the awful feeling of dread and abject misery

Simkin · 14/11/2019 21:20

They are not stupid comments. I've suffered from anxiety my whole life but it has never been as bad as the past few years since the brexit/trump/Johnson stuff. It helps me to know that others are experiencing it too (though I am sorry they are).

Worth going to the gp though OP.

alliejay81 · 14/11/2019 21:22

Go to the GP tomorrow to put your mid at rest. For now, turn off MN, read a book, watch trashy tv or have a bath. Statistically speaking it's almost certainly nothing you need to worry about in the next 12 hours.

Blueglaze · 14/11/2019 21:22

I feel lightheaded and tight chested yes

I’ve had it with anxiety. Someone else I know had it after going on the pill. It’s worth getting checked out. Can you do some basic health checks like feel your pulse? Time it over a minute - how does it feel? Strong, regular rhythm? How many beats per minute? The ECG should have indicated if there’s anything cardiac going on.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/11/2019 21:24

@Trewser They’re not stupid comments, this is a known symptom of something like a heart attack about to happen. It can also occur before a stroke or be an indication of poisoning. No one is trying to worry the OP unduly and hopefully it’s anxiety but it can be a sign of something more serious.

Trewser · 14/11/2019 21:25

It may be a symptom of a heart attack but it is also much more commonly the symptoms of an anxiety or panic attack. I've had exactly the same and never once did ny gp suggest it was my heart. He gave me valium to take if it got overwhelming and recommended coping strategies which worked so well I never needed the valium!

Walnutwhipster · 14/11/2019 21:26

Yours sounds like anxiety. DS gets an impending sense of doom when he's going into anaphylaxis. The two times I've had it in my life were when I was seriously ill with sepsis.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/11/2019 21:26

I know because I have been there. I called 111.

littlebillie · 14/11/2019 21:26

Also just to say seeing you GP tomorrow will be fine as feeling like this is a flag from your body. Yes it could be serious or it could be a milder vitamin deficiency and your body is super efficient at telling you aren't quite okay. I am a great believer in instinct so talking it through with a GP is sensible

Trewser · 14/11/2019 21:27

Well I'm sure you are worrying her unduly, particularly as she's actually had an EEG and it was fine.

Smellbow · 14/11/2019 21:27

Call 111. Hope you feel better soon

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/11/2019 21:27

@Trewser If you know then don’t dismiss others’ comments as stupid. No one is scaremongering, it’s worst case scenario but as the OP has other symptoms it should be taken seriously.

Blueglaze · 14/11/2019 21:27

It’s 85 beats per minute at the moment

OP posts:
PurpleFlower1983 · 14/11/2019 21:28

@Trewser Personally I’d rather be safe than sorry in this scenario!

Trewser · 14/11/2019 21:28

as the OP has other symptoms it should be taken seriously what other symptoms?

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/11/2019 21:30

@Trewser Read the OP’s posts.

gamerchick · 14/11/2019 21:33

Apart from you? Hmm

Trewser · 14/11/2019 21:37

I can't see anything in the OPs posts that describe any heart attack symptoms? She had an eeg which was fine, and she feels dizzy and light headed, also panic symptoms.

Nousernameforme · 14/11/2019 21:37

A tight chest and quick pulse but maybe that is because you have all told her she could be having a heart attack.
Heart attack strokes and poisoning are likely to come with other symptoms not just the doom feeling.
The doom on it's own would lend itself more to anxiety. Feel free to call 111 op to put your mind at rest.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/11/2019 21:37

@gamerchick Hmm

Read my ‘I don’t think you should worry too much...’ post.

I stand by that but I don’t think others should be minimising it either!

I hope you’re ok OP, I’m leaving this thread now.

Trewser · 14/11/2019 21:38

85bpm is a bit quick but in the normal range.

hazandduck · 14/11/2019 21:38

In your shoes OP I would just call 111 and speak to an out of hours doc if you can. It is a symptom of anxiety but like others have said it can be a sign of an underlying issue. The most likely scenario is you have anxiety because of the ECG last week, but what harm can giving them a call do? Worth it for your peace of mind.

I had this exact feeling last year I remember crying at the GP saying I just felt like something was wrong and something bad was going to happen, and her nodding along probably thinking I was a hormonal new mum.

I ended up in hospital the next day with severe mastitis that turned in to blood poisoning, I went to bed absolutely fine and woke up uncontrollably shaking head to toe. Sometimes your body is trying to tell you something.

I hope you feel better really soon x

RainWoman19 · 14/11/2019 21:39

Sounds like pysiological symptoms of anxiety. I have had the same symptoms in the past...overwhelming feeling of doom, light headed and erratic heart beat. I may be wrong but it sounds familiar.

Span1elsRock · 14/11/2019 21:41

I had this OP really badly last year, and after 3 days of it, ended up at my GPs in floods of tears and having to fill out a mood score. The GP felt it was peri-menopause but two days later I ended up being admitted with A & E with a suspected heart attack. Thankfully mine turned out to be costochondritis (inflammation of rib lining) but I was really poorly for around 5/6 months.

I'm convinced it was a forewarning. Try to see your GP and have a chat about it.
