AIBU to refuse to wear my work uniform?

Hi, sorry this is a very boring AIBU. I recently got a new job and filled out a sheet regarding uniform. The options are small, medium, large and extra large and I picked small (I’m a size 6/8 and very petite)

The uniform came today and I tried it on when I got home, it is HUGE! The polo shirt is so long it almost goes to my knees and and the jacket could fit me in twice. I look absolutely ridiculous. AIBU to refuse to wear the uniform? They have told me they don’t do extra small Confused

at least that thread illustrates the need for uniforms in so many work places - when there's so much drama because someone doesn't like clothes that are not tight-fitted enough - you can imagine what they would wear if they were allowed their own clothes Grin

JigsawsAreInPieces · 15/11/2019 08:36

@Derbee

I suspect the OP has exaggerated slightly, hence the lack of photo

Yup. She's now frantically googling clownsized ”uniform” images to back up her tale of woe. Or she's not actually a size 6 Shock cos people can assert anything on t’internet even a polo shirt that reaches their knees! Wink

LazyFace · 15/11/2019 09:11

The amount of rude comments here... unbelievable.

GreytExpectations · 15/11/2019 09:24

Love that the OP who supposedly isn't confident felt the need to say how petite they were Hmm

Kinsters · 15/11/2019 09:30

GreytExpectations Errr, she probably said that because it's relevant to the situation! And what, do you think that because someone is petite/slim doesn't mean they have confidence or self esteem issues? Is that what all the nastiness on this thread stems from? Someone who is slim daring to worry about their appearance. Jeez.

Kinsters · 15/11/2019 09:31

because someone is petite/slim means they can't have* confidence or self esteem issues?

Zaphodsotherhead · 15/11/2019 10:14

My uniform fits where it touches and the bottoms of the trousers are currently held up with safety pins as I haven't got round to shortening them yet.

But it's not a fashion parade and nobody really looks at ME, so i don't care. I'd complain far more if I was expected to wear 'fitted' clothes (my boobs would be the first thing anyone noticed!)

dimdarkashian · 15/11/2019 10:20

What happened this morning OP? You should be able to have your uniform professionally altered and be reimbursed for the expense by the company surely????

newnameforthis76 · 15/11/2019 10:48

@GreytExpectations What a ridiculous thing to say. What has making a factual statement about her height and build got to do with how confident someone is? Jeez.

FWIW, I'm a size 16, but am also only 5'2" but have been frequently been given men's hi-vis/PPE to wear on site visits at work that absolutely swamps me and makes me look like a child dressed in an adult's clothing. It's impossible to work in and people can't help laughing because it looks ridiculous - and that's only for a day now and again. I sympathise a lot with the OP; nobody should have to wear something at work that makes them look absurd.

stucknoue · 15/11/2019 10:57

Tuck in the polo shirt? Or offer to get it altered

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 15/11/2019 13:23

How do you tuck in something that comes down to your knees? I imagine it's quite baggy as well. That's a lot of fabric to try and hide.

JusticeForSandra · 15/11/2019 13:33

You just knot it on the side...

GaaaaarlicBread · 15/11/2019 16:48

Can we have an update OP?

nuxe1984 · 15/11/2019 17:30

Are you public facing? You could point out that it doesn't give a good impression of the company.

PiggyPokkyFool · 15/11/2019 17:35

Pussinboots - is this you?

AIBU to refuse to wear my work uniform?
PiggyPokkyFool · 15/11/2019 17:37

Doh!

AIBU to refuse to wear my work uniform?
Jeeperscreepers69 · 15/11/2019 17:41

Refuse lmao. Dont be silly. Dramatic much. Come to a compromise explain its too big and either get it altered or ask if they can check they dont do xs

Its2oclockinthemorning · 15/11/2019 17:44

You will lose your job so I’d just get on with it or lose your job

HouseOfGoldandBones · 15/11/2019 18:04

Can you not just take up a hem on the t shirt? And take the jacket off when you get to work?

Celestine70 · 15/11/2019 18:05

You probably have large by mistake.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 15/11/2019 18:09

everybody agrees that you can't wear a uniform too small, but that anyone can manage one too big

Well I don't agree with that. Ill-fitting clothes are not appropriate for the workplace. It doesn't matter whether they are too big or too small, although obviously you can't get them on if they are too small. But too big isn't any good either, I wouldn't' want a skirt that just fell down!

adviceseeker1975 · 15/11/2019 18:17

Where’s the photo?

Mmpip · 15/11/2019 18:39

You should wear it and when they see you with it on they will replace it (if it really does look as bad as you say)..!!! I would also reconsider your attitude with your Employer as you don't want to start your new Job on a bad note with them. They may see your reaction as being over dramatic and then question your ability to react appropriately within your workplace. You could end up losing your job before it's even began.....!!!!

AnotherCrappyDay · 15/11/2019 18:43

Well considering how boring an AIBU @Pussinboots25 said this was going to be, 9 pages isn't too bad a response Grin Hope first day went well in spite of the uniform situation

OdeToDiazepam · 15/11/2019 18:49

Have you tried washing and tumble drying it on a high temp?
