I recently got a cleaner. I can’t really afford it but the joy of coming home to a beautifully sparkly house is worth eating less foie gras* and more toast.

I actually love her. I think she is awesome.

*for clarity, I have never eaten exploded duck iver.

On a side note, what do people give their cleaner as a Christmas bonus??

rededucator · 14/11/2019 20:45

Coming hone on the once a fortnight clean we treat myself to is a pure joy. It makes me appreciate my home even more. It works out as £25 a session for us. But only do it once a fortnight

donquixotedelamancha · 14/11/2019 20:50

for clarity, I have never eaten exploded duck iver.

You should. It's really nice.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 14/11/2019 20:54

Pugs mine dusts, hoovers, mops, cleans kitchen and bathrooms. No beds or laundry.

I pay the equivalent of about 17 pounds an hour (not UK) 4 hrs every two weeks. Large 3 bed. Does well to get it all done in that time IMO

Card, nice box of chocs and 2 hours pay for xmas last year.

SmileEachDay · 14/11/2019 20:57

I had an acceptance speech prepared and pre nup drafted up 😂

What does your cleaner do in an hour and a half a week OP?

Hoovers throughout, washes kitchen and bathroom floors, cleans bathroom, cleans kitchen surfaces, dusts, makes beds, straightens up throws on sofas.

I too love my cleaner, have had 4 so far and she's the best!

6 hours per week ( I pay someone else separately to do the ironing ) and my 3 bed is sparkling.

She's amazing and I live in fear of her giving up because it really is hard to find the right one.

Ontheboardwalk · 14/11/2019 21:03

My wish list would be skirting boards, window sills and iron (not wash) and change 2 king size beds every week. Would a cleaner do that or tell me to do one?

adriennewillfly · 14/11/2019 21:04

£14 an hour down in London. My cleaner does our 1200sqft house in about 3 hrs (weekly). We tidy beforehand, so she isn't facing a pile of dishes or dirty clothes. And she doesn't change our bedsheets. But whatever she does do is worth the money.

Aria2015 · 14/11/2019 21:08

Mine comes every two weeks and nothing beats coming home from work to a spotless house! I wish I could have them every week! Scrap that, I wish I could have them every day!!!

rededucator · 14/11/2019 21:19

SmileyClare first year of having a cleaner, what's the expectations with bonus at Christmas? I pay £50 every 4 weeks for 4 hours work. Thanks

Pugsleyaddams · 14/11/2019 21:24

Is it like a standard dust and hoover though or is it with the nozzle thing off, doing all the crannies, lifting say kettle and toaster and doing underneath, going round dusting on things on shelves and stuff? I'm not trying to be an arsehole, it's just that we live in London by a busy road and I like a bit of cleaning so basic dusting of surfaces you see, hoovering and bathroom and toilet spraying are done more or less daily and I can whip round in 30 mins and do it all. In order for me to feel like my house is sparkling I need to wipe skirtings, polish taps and the shower head and height adjuster pole thing, get the wall/ ceiling duster thing out, is that what a cleaner does as part of a standard clean?

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 14/11/2019 21:32

Yes mine goes under everything to dust - all taps and showers/baths sparkle. They hoover the sofa (get the feathers and cat fur off) and corners etc done.

We have a lot of open banisters/spindles and they are all dusted and fluff free.

they do a better job than we did Grin

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 14/11/2019 21:37

Standard for me is

Kitchen:
any dishes either hand washed or put in dishwasher
Surfaces sprayed and wiped including hob and splash back. (I move everything on the surfaces- toaster- microwave- canisters- bread bins etc- everything)

Tiles/upstands
Any obvious marks on cupboard doors

Dusting:
Windowsills
Tv and tv stand
Shelves
Wall Pictures
Side units (including any nick nacks or photos)
Radiator covers
Banisters
Dressing tables
Bedside drawers
Headboard if applicable
If there is dust/cobwebs in ceilings/corners I get it with the vacuum.
Skirting boards done with hoover then mop.

Bathroom:
Mirrors
Basin
Bath
Shower (screen inside and out)
Loo
Any surfaces/shelves surrounding sink/bath etc

Its nice to know so many people do need cleaners more than ever as juggling work and family can become very tiring. We do a very good job too. Don't get much time to clean my own house so meticulously. If you end up with a great cleaner keep her that's what I would say pay her a little extra and appreciate all she does.

MintyMabel · 14/11/2019 21:44

Mine didn’t turn up today after cancelling at the last minute last week.

Definitely don’t want to marry him.

QOD · 14/11/2019 21:52

Best bit about breaking my leg recently? Even better than 6 weeks at home in the sun? Cleaner 👍🏻

flashingbeacon · 14/11/2019 22:11

After we move I’m getting my mum cleaners to come. Only problem I’m having is finding another cleaner to come the day before my mums cleaners so that they don’t think we’re pigs. I’m thinking an agency cleaner for the first lot so I don’t have to face the same one twice Blush.

Pugsleyaddams · 14/11/2019 22:22

Thank you, that's very interesting. I want a cleaner now! Never going to happen but I will fantasise about it for a bit!

MaidenMotherCrone · 14/11/2019 22:56

I actually do love my cleaner. I've loved her for all of my 51 years. She is irreplaceable. She's my Sister. She has a waiting list of new clients and I'm very lucky to have her do my house. I pay her very well as I'm out of her area and don't want to be a pain. She is amazing at what she does..... like a human dynamo.

bluerad · 14/11/2019 23:16

This thread has just encouraged me to text my cleaner and say how much I appreciate her

Cloverbeauty · 15/11/2019 05:46

@MrsFezziwig he does do his half of the chores yes. Still thinks it would be lazy, but I imagine once he changes jobs he will change his tune. Grin

smemorata · 15/11/2019 06:10

I first met my cleaner ten years ago and in the last ten years she has probably missed about two days with sick leave! Bearing in mind she also gets paid if she is sick (we have a contract, live abroad) I think this is good going! She is really great. Sometimes I am in and sometimes not but I don't feel awkward when she is in the house, unlike with dh!

polkadotpixie · 15/11/2019 06:34

I'm skint and only have a tiny 2 bedroom house but I have a cleaner and I love her!

I work full time and have a 1 year old and it's worth every penny of the £44/month she costs me to maintain my sanity and keep my house a million times cleaner than I can alone

Chewysmum · 15/11/2019 06:48

I can't afford it either but I do without new clothes and sky and fancy phones just for that 2 hours per week, it's amazing, she manages to accomplish in 2 hours what would take me 2 days, it was originally meant to be a one off but wow, couldn't be without one now. Even my bad one was still worth having

TheOliphantintheRoom · 15/11/2019 06:52

I'm intrigued as to what these cleaners do to make the house sparkle.

Do they polish furniture and clean windows?
