The new Clio ad, I bloody love it but DW thinks I’m being a sap...

Feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life for this one...

OP posts:
Mydarlingadrian · 13/11/2019 07:55

Probably should move this ti LBGT for responses!

B00kworm86 · 13/11/2019 07:56

I saw this yesterday and it made me Awwwwww!

Bezalelle · 13/11/2019 08:12

Probably should move this ti LBGT for responses!

Eh? Why?

Morgan12 · 13/11/2019 08:16

Aye I teared up a bit but really wish companies would stop using these real life situations as a marketing tool.

Oh look at us we are so inclusive.

Sophonax · 13/11/2019 08:18

Yes, @Mydarlingadrian, only gay people will find this in any way moving or remarkable. Hmm

Sophonax · 13/11/2019 08:22

@Morgan12, I don’t disagree with you — and Renault will have carefully tested this to see what sells, not out of some sense of warm and fuzzy inclusivity — but on the other hand, ads for washing powder are still largely stuck in 1950, with muddy lads flinging their football kit at a mother-wife, so at least there are some more varied images of women in ads?

Mydarlingadrian · 13/11/2019 08:37

Er, it was because it was posted yesterday and didn’t have a single comment!
It’s gorgeous and long overdue...

Mydarlingadrian · 13/11/2019 08:43

Disagree Morgan 12 - Gay Twitter is all over this, and loves it, we’ve waited a long time to see representation of our families so mainstream like this. I’m glad my kids get to see a family similar to their own even if it is just on a car advert...

TheOliphantintheRoom · 13/11/2019 08:48

I loved the Papa Nicole ads.

Absoluteunit · 13/11/2019 08:54

Lovely Smile I have something in my eye too

picklemepopcorn · 13/11/2019 08:57

Ok, I didn't get the middle bit, can someone explain?
Spoiler skip my comment if you don't want to see it.

I was doing fine as the two girls grow up,
then there was a scene in the rain and I couldn't tell who was who,
a wedding- was it the little dark haired girl?
Then the two girls reunited and with a daughter.
Did the dark haired girl marry, then leave her husband for the auburn girl? Sorry, I'm awful at faces.

picklemepopcorn · 13/11/2019 08:58

I managed to get weepy anyway, mind.

Morgan12 · 13/11/2019 09:06

Actually I apologise for that comment. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Its lovely for children to see a representation of their families and yes it is long overdue.

RooKangaroo · 13/11/2019 09:20

I really like it, but feel the song lets it down. I've had enough of Oasis songs being stripped back and sung by a girl or woman in a slower tempo.

Great songs, but I've heard it like this all before. Wish they'd been more original with their song choice as it's otherwise a lovely idea.

PhilCornwall1 · 13/11/2019 09:35

Funnily enough, this was on TV this morning and I did wonder what the hell it has to do with selling a car. No part of it would make me think, I'll pop down to the local Renault dealer and test drive a Clio.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 13/11/2019 09:43

I absolutely cannot stand rock songs being sung slow speed in a croaky, affected voice, so it's a 'no' from me just because the soundtrack annoys me too much.

Mydarlingadrian · 13/11/2019 11:14

Pickle me popcorn - the 2 girls meet on a French exchange ( the red headed girl
Is English) as kids and become friends, keep in touch then fall in love as teenagers. They break apart - it’s implied because of them m both being women it’s a problem. the red headed girls dad goes mad at her waving a love letter at her, the French girl marries a guy. The French girl leaves the husband, presumably because she’s gay and/or still in love with the English girl. She goes to England to find the English girl, they’re reunited and the final scene is them older as a couple with their own child visiting the English/ red headed woman’s parents who welcome them with open arms ( including the dad who had been yelling when he found out about their teenage relationship)
So the 30 years ‘in the making’ is both about the Clio being 30 years old and the attitudes towards LGBT people have changed drasticAlly in the last 30 years.
Trust me they have, there no WAY an ad like this would have existed 30 years ago, not a chance. And little teenage gay me would have lived to have seen something like this back then, instead of having to hide in the closet...

goodnessidontknow · 13/11/2019 11:24

I'd only seen a shorter version of this with the girls meeting and growing up which ends when they kiss in the car. Just watched the full version which isn't anywhere near as feel good!
I agree it's good to see same sex relationships normalised but as pp have said it's completely irrelevant to selling a car so feels a bit false and that Renault have just jumped on the band wagon as it's cool at the moment.

Mydarlingadrian · 13/11/2019 13:26

You say ‘bandwagon’ I say ‘representation matters’.

Mydarlingadrian · 13/11/2019 13:29

They’re brave to do it, there Will be as many people Who find this offensive, ‘distasteful’ in some way that they can’t quite articulate, or talk about bandwagons as those who think it’s sweet or an improvement o the same old nuclear family type ads that have been running forever

goodnessidontknow · 13/11/2019 13:41

@mydarlingadrian I agree, my point was that I feel Renault are doing a good thing for the wrong reasons.

picklemepopcorn · 13/11/2019 13:46

@Mydarlingadrian thank you! I missed the bit about the father, that makes much more sense!

Now I know what actually happened, I'd say great overall but a little heavy handed with the Virtue signalling.

And to be fair, Nicole/Papa had little to do with cars.

Fink · 13/11/2019 14:04

I think it would have been better if it had just been the child & teenage bit. The marriage breakdown was upsetting and not in a nice feel-good affirmatory way.

ShowOfHands · 13/11/2019 14:09

Breathy slowed down rock can fuck right off.

But the sentiment is otherwise well done.

Zaphodsotherhead · 13/11/2019 14:12

Love it. I think it's handled really well and I love ads that tell a story, as opposed to being Keira Knightly wandering around in her nightie and inviting us to guess how she smells.

Well, any perfume ad, really.
