The new Clio ad, I bloody love it but DW thinks I’m being a sap...

Feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life for this one...

OP posts:
TheOliphantintheRoom · 13/11/2019 22:07

Poor bloke being dumped by his dark haired wife.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2019 22:14

I hate that song and also feel sorry for the bloke!

It hasn't made me want to rush down to the Renault dealership either.

Mydarlingadrian · 15/11/2019 10:28

Mmm, I don’t feel sorry for the anonymous bloke who we barely get to see...

NoSauce · 15/11/2019 10:35

A bit heavy for a bloody car advert.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/11/2019 10:36

Very intense for a car advert

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 15/11/2019 10:41

I’ve only seen the short version and loved it. It felt right for a car ad. The long version sounds far too intense for a car ad. The Clio ads were always about a story (Nicole/papa) rather than the car. The car was just the transportation for the characters so this is just following on that theme.

kenandbarbie · 15/11/2019 10:56

They should have missed out the wedding and shouty dad bit. Just let them be happy.

Redviola · 15/11/2019 11:02

It shows the versions of the clio that they used at various stages of their love story. The clio brought them together and they had their first kiss in it. Of course the car is relevant!!

Glad they have done this. Hopefully one day gay love stories on TV will be commonplace enough that nobody even thinks its worth starting a mumsnet thread about it.

worriedmumtoteen · 15/11/2019 11:06

It's lovely. Nothing to do with buying a car but lovely. I like the message.

Also not a fan of the singer singing s-o-o-o-o- s-l-o-w-l-y and creakily. wtf?

Honeyroar · 15/11/2019 11:10

I didn't care either way for it, it was ok, but thought it was going to be better from everyone's comments. Doesn't come close to the Nicole adverts!

Why do they always have to do a crap musical cover for these "emotional heartstrings" adverts?

neverknowingwhy · 15/11/2019 11:15

I read an article on it and apparently it's supposed to show how far society has moved on within the lifetime of the Clio (with the parallel that while cars have moved on so has society) hence the need for the shouty dad who becomes accepting in the end.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 15/11/2019 11:17

It's really lovely - and I do think the history of the different Clio models does link it to the car.

Brefugee · 15/11/2019 11:20

Breathy slowed down rock can fuck right off.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll wach it with no sound! I absolutely hate this trend and can't wait for it to finish.

and yes yes to PP who said representation matters. If this was a bog standard hetero couple nobody would bat an eyelid (and maybe notice all the different cars being used)

GetOffTheTableMabel · 15/11/2019 11:23

I had only seen a cut down version on tv which ends with the first proper kiss. It made me cry. I like the full version but agree that it didn’t need a marriage breakdown. There was no need to involve a man at all.

Mydarlingadrian · 15/11/2019 11:28

This came on last night, shortened version, when my kids were watching telly. The 7 year old started shouting mum! Mum! Come quick. That girl’s got two mummies like us!
The look on her face was absolutely priceless, excited, surprised, happy. Said it all for me.
I showed them the longer version, and the 10 year old said I’m glad it’s got two mums in it but all that for a car Grin

hoxt · 15/11/2019 11:29

Representation really matters. And it made me cry. We had a Citroen that was crap though 😂.

ElfridaEtAl · 15/11/2019 11:31

@Mydarlingadrian my heart, bless your 7YO.

I think red haired woman was in The Unforgotten on ITV.

just5morepeas · 15/11/2019 11:37

That is lovely. Agree about the song being annoying tho. And distracting!

Goodnightjude1 · 15/11/2019 11:42

It’s alright....

Should have left Liam and Noel to sing it though.

potter5 · 15/11/2019 11:50

Good advert, rubbish music.

Alwaysreadingme · 15/11/2019 11:51

The whole thing with the father shouting and the marriage is supposed to be showing how things have evolved over the last 30 years. I have plenty of LGBT friends estranged from their families just for their sexuality, plenty who were yelled at when they first came out or who felt they had to hide their sexuality or relationships, and quite a few who tried to be straight, get married, be ‘normal’ because of societal, religious or family pressures. Not because they wanted to lead some man or woman a merry dance but because they really did think they could make it work or being out wasn’t an option.
It’s no accident that the wedding shown is in a church ( France is a secular country and the church bit is extra, you have to legally marry separately in a civil ceremony the church service is entirely optional and done for Religious/traditional reasons) and not the town hall.
So as a gay woman with kids and a DW I think the tone and timbre of this ad is absolutely bang on the money.

TheMidasTouch · 15/11/2019 12:04

I actually like the stripped back song but presumed it was the John Lewis and as it's their style. Now I've watched the full ad and not at all teary. I can't stand these ads where the story bears little or no relation to the product. Thanks to the OP for explaining the 30 year thing though which I hadn't gleaned from the ad.

If it says anything to me about the product it would be that the Renault Clio is for lesbians or, at the very least, for females. Let's target our product and cut out at least half of the population because we don't really want to sell to the mass market. We don't care about limiting our market and, subsequently, profit. We're not in it for the business really, just making it for fun.

The Nicole/Papa ad was stupid too as was the Va Va Boom with stripper Dita Von Reese and voyeur Thierry Henry.

TheMidasTouch · 15/11/2019 12:08

"This came on last night, shortened version, when my kids were watching telly. The 7 year old started shouting mum! Mum! Come quick. That girl’s got two mummies like us!
The look on her face was absolutely priceless, excited, surprised, happy."
Now that is lovely.

Slappadabass · 15/11/2019 12:12

As a woman with a DD who thinks she may be gay I love love love these kind of adverts and that been gay is shown as normal on TV.
I want her to know it's ok, it normal and it reinforces everything I say to her.

I also have lesbian friends who have children, they will grow up seeing these kind of adverts and gay people on TV shows and know their family is ok too.

It might be a marketing ploy, using been inclusive to sell, but when you think of the benefits i don't think you can complain!

SapphireSeptember · 15/11/2019 12:14

I'm not crying, you're crying! It's lovely and I feel like saying it's about bloody time!

Re the marriage break up, I know women who've got married, had kids and then left their husbands for other women. Yes it's sad, but I think it's sadder that some people think that's what's expected of them instead of them being free to live their own lives. Also I don't think a marriage ending has to be a failure, relationships end, including the ones with a legal contract.
