Less likely to include tea total friend?

Would you be less likely to include a tea total friend on nights out etc? Just wondering if they are seen as boring or if it is less of a stigma these days.

I don't drink anymore, due to being in recovery. It hasn't affected my social life to a noticeable degree. I'm not uncomfortable being around drinkers, even when I was in early sobriety (what mattered to me was that I didn't drink). I still get invites out, because I'm just as loud and annoying whilst sober Grin

The only thing I've noticed is that I'm now pretty good at spotting people/friends who are developing drink problems. I don't say anything - it's not my place - but it's surprising the number of people I know who seem to be increasingly dependent on alcohol.

cstaff I would nearly always go. The difference that our group would do lots of other things - go for meals, cinema, walks on a Sunday, but gradually it tailed off to three of them pretty much only ever wanting to go to the pub. Which, well, is fine, but not all the time. Oh, and when one of them (a night I wasn't at) drove home pissed and then the following weekend despite being a best man at a wedding got so pissed that he and his wife and the third wheel in that group (all of whom were the best men) left the reception at 10 pm two hours before the bride and groom, I decided I wouldn't accept the pub invites quite so often as it was getting dull, truth to tell. I didn't disappear totally, perhaps went to half of them. Now I don't get invited. Ah well. I'm enjoying my life, they're just sitting around getting pissed every Friday and Saturday which is a shame in your mid-40s that that's all you want to do.

If one friendship group always wants to do something that you dislike or can't do, then perhaps it's time to look for new friends.

AryaStarkWolf · 13/11/2019 14:44

Of course not, none of my close friends are tee total but alot of times when we meet up one or 2 of them won't be drinking as they're driving

blueraindrop · 13/11/2019 14:49

I would invite them( surely you hang with friends for their company not their drinking friends?. My dh is teetotal I don't think he's boring.

blueraindrop · 13/11/2019 14:50

That made no sense not their drinking habits *

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 13/11/2019 14:56

I think it's obvious that there are people who wouldn't want to include teetotallers in their social events. You always get comments about how it's "boring", or they think you're staying sober just so you can gather information to hold over their heads the day after, or they have some weird idea that you're judging them for drinking and holding yourself superior to everyone else. If your friends are like that, you need to find new ones.

crosstalk · 13/11/2019 17:30

I've been on both sides of this. Many very drunk people are boring, a liability and worse case scenario sick and aggressive. So if you're teetotal you're likely to get yourself home early and you won't be splitting the bill unless you're very generous. Most teetotallers or people not drinking are doing it because they don't like it, it doesn't like them, religious or medical reasons (including pregnancy and antibiotics). They're not boring or judgemental and happy to party. I know which group I'd prefer to ask if I'm going out.

73Sunglasslover · 13/11/2019 17:57

I have a friend who does drink a little but still manages to suck the fun out of events much more than teetotal friends!

Wtfdoipick · 13/11/2019 18:17

It would completely depend, if you are talking a night at home just inviting one person over to share a bottle of wine then no I wouldn't invite a teetotal person but a group situation it wouldn't make a difference whether people drink or not. The home situation is because if I'm inviting someone to share a bottle with me then I do not want to have to drink the whole thing myself so I would choose a drinker for that situation. Doesn't mean I wouldn't choose the non drinker in other situations though.

Spied · 13/11/2019 18:22

Would depend the reason behind them being teetotal.
I'm an ex-alcoholic.
Please don't invite me.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 13/11/2019 18:28

I think some of you are socialising with the wrong people! I honestly don't notice if people are drinking alcohol or not. And like a pp said, people who drink too much and get loud, lairy or maudlin or need to be taken home because they are so pissed are the biggest fun sponges of the lot.
