To spend time looking at houses on rightmove?

Mammyloveswine · 10/11/2019 10:52

So I have a secret hobby... I spend hours searching houses on rightmove and then plan how I would furnish/redcorate etc...

I don't even choose big houses, I often go for cheaper houses or flats and imagine if it was just me and the kids so I could decorate it exactly how I want Grin and not have DHs input/shite to factor in Blush

This is my current fantasy home... I think it could a stunner!

Feel free to share yours!

YANBU I do this, I regularly look up houses near dd2's school - I could never afford a house there (I currently can't afford to get on property ladder at all but I dream). Theni look at houses nearer to where I live now, looking for period do-er uppers (again can't afford to buy but...). I drove my husband barmy with it but it keeps hope alive that one day I might not need to pay rent but pay a mortgage instead.

I do exactly as you do, think how I would redecorate, what walls I would need to knock down, the extension I would build etc! Many an evening spent "buying and renovating" 😂

Here's enough potential to last a lifetime...

@PenCreed I would absolutely buy those towers if I could. They are gorgeous. Not keen on the clutter though.

This is the other one than I'd love to buy. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-73116286.html

I do this all the time. I also have different categories:

  • the houses I could have bought had I never met DH and was still single.
-The houses we could buy if we won the lottery. -The houses we would potentially upgrade too in real life if we get promotions etc.
  • Gorgeous mansion type houses that I sometimes try to recreate in The Sims 4. Though I never get round to doing that any more sadly.
onioncrumble · 10/11/2019 14:04

We just bought in that area without viewing. It took 3 weeks from offer accepted to transferring the cash. Tenant moves in next week. We have a few of them around there, if you can cash purchase, as these are usually repossessions, they are a real bargain. We do however accept benefits and pets to salve our conscience. In the last 10 years we have had the best tenants so far touch wood!

Evilmorty · 10/11/2019 14:06

TaliZorahVasNormandy I love the decor too, the old musical signs! How lovely and eccentric!

WaningGibbous · 10/11/2019 14:10

Unloved Grand Designesque house www.rightmove.co.uk/s6p/65322021

keepingbees · 10/11/2019 14:27

I do this too. I also prefers 'normal' houses over mansions.
We bought 3 years ago but I still check the local housing market daily. I look at other areas I know too. I look at houses we could potentially upgrade to, and cheap houses and flats that I imagine what I'd do with if I had to leave DH and live alone with the kids Grin

Orangepancakes · 10/11/2019 14:28

I'm so glad I'm not alone! I often lay in bed until 2am browsing through the listings and dreaming Blush

@TaliZorahVasNormandy those water towers sound lovely, not sure I could be doing with the 2 flights of stairs to reach the kitchen though - be a bit of a pain with the week's shop. Although I've only ever lived in houses and ground floor flats, suppose plenty of people do this on higher floor flats.

Also, current owners seem to have a Disney thing which is a bit weird, and I'd have to redecorate a hell of a lot - probably rip out that whole kitchen as it's a bit weird.

HopingForSomeLuck · 10/11/2019 15:15

Blimey!! It's way cheaper up there than it is down here! Wink

Icantreachthepretzels · 10/11/2019 15:21

Once I've won the lottery I'll be moving abroad - but I do like to keep my eye open for a little cottage to come back and spend Christmas in.

This one is currently a serious contender
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-76228652.html

though I'll build a wall across from the back of the cupboard under the stairs and reconfigure the kitchen so I have a kitchen/diner and separate cosy living room. Then obviously redecorate everything to my taste (no wood panelled baths allowed!) with particular reference to arranging furniture so there is room for a Christmas tree beside the fireplace.

Yeah, that kitchen would have to go.

I can see why that Grand Designs house is unloved. That price tag!!!

DramaAlpaca · 10/11/2019 15:54

Oh yes, Rightmove lurking is one of my guilty pleasures.

littlehappyhippo · 10/11/2019 15:56

@Mammyloveswine THAT is your fantasy home???

Ooooooookay........ Confused

Easily pleased then eh?

littlehappyhippo · 10/11/2019 15:58

@WaningGibbous

That 'Grand designseque' house you put a link to looks like a head office for a huge cheese factory.

troppibambini · 10/11/2019 16:12

Oh god yes me too. I'm far too over invested in the local property market!!
Me and dh walked to the pub in summer and I gave him a running commentary on the houses as we walked past-which had sold recently and for how much..
He said "bloody hell its like going for a walk with Phil and Kirsty" BlushGrin

IndigoHexagon · 10/11/2019 19:37

I also do that.

What I don’t do, when I find a random area I like, which I miles away from where I actually live is research local schools, check out local facilities and where I would shop, go to the gym etc etc

I don’t do that because I’m not ever going to move and just because it’s handy info to have to flesh out daydreams I would t be that sad! 🤣😳🤣

NeedaDiscoNap · 10/11/2019 19:40

Oooh yes I do this all the time - daily in fact! I also have ‘normal’ homes, fantasy and super fantasy homes saved. I fantasise about what furniture I’d have, how I’d redecorate etc. My friends and family think it’d hilarious, they always joke that I know the sale price of every house in the local area Grin

Monkeynuts18 · 10/11/2019 19:41

I’m so glad others do this. I love Rightmove so much, it’s my porn.

I like to look in our area but also in lovely areas of the country I dream about living - eg the Suffolk coast, Cornwall, the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District...

I had a baby quite recently and Rightmove literally gets me through the night feeds!!

Cottipus · 10/11/2019 19:48

Rightmove lurking is a valid hobby- I thought everyone did that!

I will also visit places and have a guess how much property costs there, then come home and check on Rightmove. I visited a friend at her home in a very pretty village and was surprised how affordable property was there.

I admit to having looked up what friends paid for their houses too.

Paddingtonthebear · 10/11/2019 19:50

Yep I look at local property for rent and for sale pretty much every day on Rightmove

Gruesome2some · 10/11/2019 19:52

Someone recently said looking at rightmove is the adult equivalent of children looking through the Argos catalogue! So true.
