To throw away these mattresses?

Mouseinfestedhovel · 09/11/2019 13:36

Was taking the Moses baskets out of a built in cupboard only to find they are covered in mouse droppings.

I want to throw away the whole things really but it looks like I can wash the outer materials but not the mattresses. I want to chuck the mattresses away but DH says to keep them.

I’ve said fine but that he can sort them out then. He doesn’t want to do that either.

AIBU to chuck them away? I hate the thought of a little baby laying in there knowing there’s been mice all over them. There’s two Moses baskets...

I’m only 11 weeks pregnant I should add.

Wicker, not wicket, obviously

Gonetharnagain · 09/11/2019 14:13

Piss all over his pillow and see if he wants to sleep on it tonight!

Alsohuman · 09/11/2019 14:15

I’m all in favour of reusing anything possible. I’d throw them away in a heartbeat.

Longblondeandblueeyes · 09/11/2019 14:15

Definitely bin them! I would not consider placing a baby in a basket that mice had been all over. Goodness knows what could be lurking in the wicker...germs/piss. It could even be rat poo. They carry all sorts of disease, don't they.

Mouseinfestedhovel · 09/11/2019 14:16

Well the mice is only half the issue.

I’ve only caught one mouse so far using a snap trap but I was using poison before and not had any more droppings downstairs but this is the first time I’ve opened the cupboard shamefully.

Yes I have a DH problem and things are bad at the moment but I can’t do much about that either at the moment

mankyfourthtoe · 09/11/2019 14:32

Ask him if he's happy to lick the basket as the mice will have weed and pood on it...

longtimelurkerhelen · 09/11/2019 14:32

£50 is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Throw the whole lot out.

Look at this link, a list of diseases you can catch from mice. Also I think you can also catch weils disease.

Let him sulk! or better yet, make him use the mattress as a pillow

FizzyGreenWater · 09/11/2019 14:38

DH says to keep them. I’ve said fine but that he can sort them out then. He doesn’t want to do that either.

Oh he's a dickhead then? Ahh, why didn't you say. No need to listen to a dickhead or even ask their opinion, really.

Trust the mattresses are safely in the bin even as I post this.

1forAll74 · 09/11/2019 14:42

I would throw out the mattresses, and get new ones if you can afford to do so. You will obviously feel a whole lot better with some new ones for a baby.

Mouseinfestedhovel · 09/11/2019 14:42

Thanks again all. The mattresses are well and truly binned.

I had hoped I could keep the outer layers of of the baskets so avoid him sulking but I guess it’s all going to be binned except the stands. They are wooden so I can antibac them down.

He blames me for getting mice so having to chuck something out to replace over something he perceives to be my fault is just another thing

OP posts:
divafever99 · 09/11/2019 14:45

Glad they have been binned! Not worth the risk when you get a new replacement for £29! You should be getting a new mattress for the baby anyway.

Autumntoowet · 09/11/2019 14:49

I am pretty strict with reusing stuff, and most of what I buy is second hand.
But I am 100% sure you need to chuck those away.
You should get new mattresses for Moses for new baby anyway
I would be on the fence if the mattress had been stored cleaned and dry and always had a waterproof washable cover.
Maybe get the midwife or health visitor to talk to him
Not ok

He sounds delightful OP

Do change your username to PiedPiperFilesForDivorce - pretty please :)

bobstersmum · 09/11/2019 15:01

A moses mattress is so so cheap! I would definitely bin.

ELM8 · 09/11/2019 15:12

Why are you to blame for the mice? He sounds horrendous...

Mouseinfestedhovel · 09/11/2019 15:19

@ELM8 - because I have stuff in the cupboard so it’s my fault. And I’m “messy” even though I’m cleaner than him and tidy up more than he does

Mouseinfestedhovel · 09/11/2019 15:19

@FizzyGreenWater 😂 tempting...

Do you have a support network IRL? He really needs to have a reality check about how he is treating you! No one deserves that but even more so whilst you're in a vulnerable state Thanks

sableandI · 09/11/2019 15:53

Bin it.

Csleeptime · 09/11/2019 15:54

I would throw the stands too. You need a professional deep clean in your cupboards too. Very dangerous health hazard.

As for your DH what kind if idiot would put a baby in a mouse piss covered bed. Having had a baby with sepsis I can tell you if never leave my baby with him alone.

longtimelurkerhelen · 09/11/2019 16:20

@Mouseinfestedhovel So you have mice because you put stuff in the cupboard? That is what cupboards are for, storage!

As long as you are not leaving a hansel and gretel style trail of breadcrumbs about the house, it is not your fault. Where did he suggest they should be stored?

Does he ever take any responsibility for himself or just leaves you to do everything so he can reserve the right to complain that you did it wrong?

Mouseinfestedhovel · 09/11/2019 17:45

@longtimelurkerhelen - that sums him up really

That’s also what I said about the cupboard.

His parents live rurally and sometimes get rats in the conservatory but he wouldn’t dare say to them “oh that’s because you’ve got stuff in there”

I don’t know where he expects me to put the stuff like blow up bed and the Christmas decorations but after Christmas I’m just saying it’s his problem to deal with

He sounds delightful op. I think you should bin the husband along with the moses basket
