New ikea advert

Saw the new ikea ad last night and found it bitchy and judgemental. Thought it hit the wrong note by shaming families with perfectly acceptable homes with lines like "this place is small its barely a house" "disgusting" "depressing". Not exactly aspirational or feelgood.

I like it. Think it’s clever and sure it’s about silencing ones inner critics? It also highlights that small changes (a table, a rug, a few pictures, mirror and lamp) can smarten up a place.

Well it certainly tapped into my insecurities and made me feel shit about all the things we cant afford rather than giving me that warm fuzzy feeling that I want to aspire to. Just shameless peer pressure.

I thought the house looked fine to start with and theres no need to comment on things you cant change, like the size of your house. Usually they arent so overtly materialistic.

I thought it was funny, Ikea and grime were not things I would have thought went together!

Since when did adverts have to be ‘feel good’ and not just trying to sell what the company has?

It’s certainly relatable, I can’t count the years I’ve realised I have to host Christmas in a month’s time and gone on a diy/furniture change in a panic, including this year. Having a ceiling sorted next week Grin

As a pp says, you certainly can make a difference with accessories or furniture, and funnily enough that’s what Ikea sells. Job done in my opinion!

I think it's funny

Surely it's more realistic to aspire to get a new rug or lamp, than the 8 foot beautifully perfect tree or perfect family set up or complete matching set of dinnerware in all of the other Christmas ads?

When I see the usual Christmas ads bollocks, I just think here comes another year where people bust a gut and spend a fortune to make it like it's 'supposed' to be.

Fact is, there's far more people that can relate to the Ikea ad!

I saw this at the cinema and was enjoying the couples eclectic style and vintage nik naks (especially the cuckoo clock) before I realised that I was supposed to be finding them depressing. I actually found the bland remodelling of their flat into a mdf bore fest more depressing ☹️
