Can someone help me here?
I don't have enough medical knowledge to be pushy on this.

DP got severe toothache a few days ago, hasn't been able to sleep. It's been pretty bad.
Now all of a sudden about 10 minutes ago he's started throwing up blood. He's got pains in his neck and head that worsen when he lies down.

What's the best course of action? None of this sounds right to me yet he's adamant he doesn't need to see a doctor etc Angry

Is he actually throwing up blood or has an abscess ruptured and the blood is from that? If he's throwing up blood he needs to be seen urgently so I'd go to a&e.

user275 · 09/11/2019 08:46

I don't know if it's two separate issues - but they said to ring emergency dentist (even though I mentioned throwing up blood).

Yes, I think he's took too much ibuprofen for the pain actually!!!!! Could that be to do with it?

Have you read any of the answers? Throwing up blood is serious. U r there 111 isnt. Go to the hospital.

BlueEyedPersephone · 09/11/2019 08:49

Go to a&e, throwing up blood is not right.
111 can only advise on answers to questions on a screen so if he has minimised they will too.

babymidgetgem · 09/11/2019 08:50

Ibuprofen can cause gastric bleeding, you really need to get him to A+E

EleanorReally · 09/11/2019 08:51

yes it does op

PolloDePrimavera · 09/11/2019 08:52

Ibuprofen can indeed cause gastric bleeding but I think in conjunction with horrendous stomach pain. So I'm with the above, a and e.

TroysMammy · 09/11/2019 08:54

NHS advice on side effects of too much ibuprofen - black poo and blood in vomit - a sign of bleeding in the stomach, feeling tired or sleepy. A&E.

Ginfordinner · 09/11/2019 08:54

Tell him not to be a selfish arsehole. This won't resolve without medical intervention. He needs to put his big boy pants on and be seen by a medical professional today.

user275 · 09/11/2019 08:56

Thanks everyone - I'm actually getting livid at him now so don't worry. PLUS the fact that I haven't even spoke to an actual doctor after 2 hours and have been told by a receptionist to ring the dentist.

foamrolling · 09/11/2019 08:57

Sounds like A&E to me and I'm surprised that 111 told you emergency dentist. I work for them but clearly a different area of the country as I know the outcome for us would have been A&E. If he's insistent on just ringing the emergency dentist make sure he tells them he took too many ibuprofen and is vomiting blood, they may well tell him to go to A&E and he might listen then.

user275 · 09/11/2019 09:07

Rang the emergency dentist just to tick the box & they've said it's a doctor situation.

Rang back out of hours and they've said unfortunately we've had to go back to bottom of the triage list because they marked it as done when I was told to ring the dentist Angry

good luck op

Booboostwo · 09/11/2019 09:09

111 sound completely useless. I think you need to wake him up and take him to A&E now.

foamrolling · 09/11/2019 09:11

How many ibuprofen has he taken in the last 24 hours op?

user275 · 09/11/2019 09:15

@foamrolling "unsure, about 20 or something".

Booboostwo · 09/11/2019 09:17

Are you serious OP? He took 20 Ibuprofen when he should have taken 6 and is now vomiting blood? You need to get him to A&E now.

BlueEyedPersephone · 09/11/2019 09:18

Take him to a&e NOW if he has gastric bleeding from 20 tablets he could have done permanent damage, stop pissing about on here or dithering with 111 and take him to a&e

lolaflores · 09/11/2019 09:19

Just go to a+e. Please. Dont wait for any longer. pack a few bits and go. He is not going to get any proper assessment or treatment on the phone

Hawkmoth · 09/11/2019 09:19

Christ.

I accidentally took double dose of ibuprofen once and wrecked my stomach. Never been able to tolerate it since. That's nowhere near 20 though.

Is he always this stubborn?

Quartz2208 · 09/11/2019 09:20

does he has a temperature and is he sleepy or rousable

Untreated tooth infection can get to the brain or the heart or lead to sepsiS

AngelasRashes · 09/11/2019 09:21

OP please take him to A&E now. Sounds like an upper GI bleed secondary to the ibuprofen use. This is a medical emergency. In addition, accidental ibuprofen overdose can cause renal failure. Please go to A&E. I hope he’s ok.

lolaflores · 09/11/2019 09:21

In basic terms.. blood should largely stay inside the body. It has no business being puked up. It's totally wrong

Ginfordinner · 09/11/2019 09:21

"unsure, about 20 or something"

Bloody hell! That is an insanely stupid amount. A & E NOW!!!!!!

ArgyllFTM · 09/11/2019 09:21

The toothache is a secondary issue. He’s taken a large ibuprofen overdose and is vomiting blood, a sign that it’s damaged his stomach. He needs to go to A&E. Are you sure he’s just being stubborn, not confused or drowsy?
