AIBU?

Neighbour coughing outside

Beagled · 09/11/2019 00:42

One of my neighbours (attached) is a heavy smoker with a very nasty smokers cough. Every time he has a smoke he coughs his guts up outside my bedroom window. He’s out there every 30-45 minutes rain or shine, hacking away outside. And it’s every bloody night throughout the night. He’s outside now coughing away at 12.30 am. Would I be unreasonable to pop my head out and politely say something? I can’t sleep. I do have my window open year round, but even with it shut you can hear it. He makes no attempt to be quiet, it’s a proper mouth open, lung clearing cough with lots of spitting and flem 🤢 and is often out there at 2/3/4 am

AIBU and just tired and grumpy?

Record him to show haw had it is?
I lived next to a family where spitting and hawking is part of the culture
Our horses were maybe five feet apart and there was a ventilation brick with holes in both our walls facing each other. A
All day every day I could hear the f@@@@ hawking up
I worked from home
I used to shout through the gap stop STOP
Eventually they moved out. But it was a rental and in a place where people moved on every few years so not your situation
I really feel for you

@Whatsnewpussyhat

He coughs when he's had a fag so he could stop it by quitting fucking smoking.

Ah! You've solved the problem! Not only OP's but that of the thousands (millions?) of smokers who'd love to stop but can't....they just need to quit!

Simple! Hmm

I suspect OP's neighbour has succumbed to his cough by now.
@Freespirit67
Omg how dare they cough in their garden and come in and out of their own gate! Madness Grin
Of course they can do those things, as long as they don’t affect other people’s lives.

My neighbour does this too, she’s often outside coughing and smoking, if she’s in the back garden the smell of smoke wafts through my air vents in the living room and she’s often out there late at night coughing loudly. It’s annoying but I put up with it, there are worse things to moan about.

Quies foam ear plugs. I can still hear the fire alarm through them.

They all went off recently at 2am and I woke up the same time as dh.

Is he dead yet @Beagled? Murdered or otherwise?

You need better double glazing, OP. Since I had new windows put in at the start of the year, I can hardly hear a thing from outside.

I can hear the man next door coughing in his house though. I won't complain, because I cough a lot (constant catarrh due to allergies) and my coughing probably irritates him just as much as his does me.

"I suspect OP's neighbour has succumbed to his cough by now."

As this thread is about 2 years old, I would think that ^ is highly likely....

I thought this was going to be covid related but as it's not I've given you an automatic YANBU.

I clicked on this thread thinking it would be someone worried their neighbour would give them covid coughing outside, but obviously not from 2019 Grin

white noise...

You are bringing back horrible memories of my 'alarm clock' when I lived in a flat with a communal light well that all our bathrooms opened onto. Every morning at 7am some bloke off the well would get up, do a massive pee (he must have been tall, sounded like he was peeing from a great height!), then have a massive coughing session and hack up something he then spat into the toilet. God I was happy to move out of there!

Maybe he doesn't realise how loud his coughing is? Maybe if you see him, say something like "Oh, I heard you coughing last night. Are you OK? There is so many nasty colds and coughs going around at the minute isn't there?" And he might realize that other people can hear him and be more mindful in future.

People are absolutely vile. Aside from the fact he’s preventing you from sleeping and being a noise nuisance, it’s fucking disgusting!!!

No wonder your annoyed OP. I’d be raging too, the selfish sod. I’d be shouting out the windows ‘Go and cough your guts up in your own house, I don’t want to hear or see you bringing up phlegm’

It’s like when you’re walking on the street and some dirty bastard takes a big deep breath sniff, then gargles it in their through then spits it out. They’ve got no shame at all. I usually give them the dirtiest look. They’re like uncivilised animals.

At the end of the day it’s self inflicting with him smoking so why should you have to be put out and listen to the disgusting sounds etc….

He may have reasons for smoking so much - I have a friend with mental health issues, in their 20s, was in care and they took all their benefits off them, made them do chores and rewarded them with cigarettes. Went from a non smoker to 30-40 a day.

I would pop out and say you're really worried about his health, as he seems to be coughing really badly and waking you up, and suggest he go see a GP. He may not be aware, but at least you can get in the fact it's waking you

This is not her job...and it's inappropriate and anyway this is a Zombie thread. It's old and OP is long gone.
