AIBU?

Poppies and FB

Ok this is a really petty gripe - I think.

Firstly it must be said (so as not to drop feed) we are a military family, DH is in the forces.

It really really pisses me off come 1st Nov people on FB who put this bloody ring of Poppies around their profile picture on FB. Them in a bikini with a Poppy etc etc.

Do these people actually buy a Poppy and donate or is this it?

Sheep virtue signalling?

To me it’s crass and shallow and I don’t know a bit inappropriate, duck face with Poppies around it.

I always buy a Poppy broach relevant to my husbands service and I wear it most of the year.

I may be being unreasonable.

I am glad to see that the majority of people on here are exhibiting compassion and kindness towards the fallen, and the men and women who have given so much for us.

The people on here (including the OP,) who are dissing the poppy, (and the whole meaning behind it,) are being so disrespectful, and should hang their head(s) in shame.

The poppy doesn't offend me. TBH I don't really care about it one way or another, but apparently that is offensive to some.

I am NOT “dissing” the Poppy.

Yabu. Sounds like your fb friends list is more of your problem. Unfollow or defriend.

Forces wife and the mother of a soldier here. I, too, am the member of Fb groups supporting fellow military wives and partners, one with 9k members, the other with 3k. Loads of us have got poppy frames, I've got the official RBL one on my profile picture. We're obviously doing it all wrong. Hmm.

You are being absolutely ridiculous imo.

I choose to donate and wear a poppy as a sign of remembrance to those that fought and those that died. I observe the 2 mins silence.

I also have a poppy frame round my FB profile pic. It is a very normal pic, no duck faces or bikinis or whatever else. My FB friends are real friends (who also change their pic at this time), we are scattered around the country, I see it as a way of wearing my poppy even with those I won't physically spend time with. I am not one of any 'band' of people who jump from cause to cause, I do not change my profile to baubles or reindeers or Easter bunnies or anything else. Just a poppy frame for a couple of days in November.

And proud to. Don't assume I am one of a certain 'type' made up in your head, for doing so.

Of course, making reference to certain jobs is best avoided. It's not the case for most though. And if your arm of the services is so hot on this to the extent they're policing your posts, you need to be a bit more careful about what you say on VERY public forums. You leave quite a footprint on MN.

Still, this is a de-rail. You do your poppy broach delivery thing and others will do theirs.

I am pretty aware of what I can and can’t do on social media and forums - you can look for me on Twitter to if you want, or just go trawling through my posts on here - I have absolutely nothing to hide and I really dislike the threatening tone of your post.

Seems like you are pissed off that you were wrong?

Pretty sure anyone in the SAS doesn’t go announcing it on Social Media either, they probably aren’t even allowed ON social media at all.

And it’s not my arm of the services - it’s my husband who is serving - I am not an extension of him.

Tbh anyone who uses "snowflake" as an insult is a complete bell end. And I've never come across anyone who's ~offended~ by the poppy either.

How?

I think forces jobs probably impact on the serving persons family more than most other jobs - meaning we “live” it 🤷‍♀️

That's certainly how you come across.

And yes, you've irritated me, I'm happy to admit that. Your opinions are narrow minded, holier than thou and, frankly, a bit of an embarrassment to the more reasonable Forces wives and husbands. Try re-running your OP on one of your military FB pages and let us know how you get along.

What a load of absolute bollocks.

I have all along stated that this is a petty gripe, that it’s my personal opinion and that I respect others and it doesn’t make me “right” there is no right or wrong and there are worse things to worry about etc etc etc.

I think you need to look up narrow minded.

It’s 1 opinion about a tiny issue.

I wondered what others thought and clearly (here anyway) I am in a minority - fair enough.

@Iamnotagoddess The thing is, while you stayed originally you knew it was a petty gripe, you obviously felt strongly enough to post about it publicly here.

And not it an attempt to give your head a wobble and move on, as on the whole you've not accepted you're being unreasonable, but tried to defend it by ad hominem attacks on this specific group or your friends you have a problem with.

Yep, it's getting a little personal and heated. It's AIBU. It's literally the place people come to vent and create drama.

You'd be better off letting go of the minor battles your fighting with a couple on here and just acknowledging a head wobble is in order & there's nothing wrong with posting a poppy border, duck face or no.

Can I assume that you wouldn't call wearing a poppy virtue signalling?

And if so what is the difference please?

Report

I remember to put it on whatever top I am wearing that day.

I think about it.

I have served, husband still serving, both sides of our families have served and the very vast majority of our friends too. I know people who are fine as a result, some who got badly injured, some who never made it back alive, some who suffer horribly mentally etc etc. We are all different. Some wear poppies, some do not, some attend services, some do not. What we ALL have in common is that we remember - not because we feel like we should once a year or because it looks good to others. We all remember, in our own ways all day, every day pretty much.

I often change my coat or top and forget to transfer my poppy pin badge (I do like to wear one from 1st Nov until the 11th). Just because in that moment I have been too busy to think about a badge doesn't mean that I don't care as much as someone who ensures theirs is always on. I don't notice if anyone wears a poppy or not and absolutely don't assume that they're less "virtuous" than I am.

I am all for poppy borders on social media actually if it prompts people to notice and find out for themselves what it means.

I think people are getting a little over invested in my pondering .. obviously I wouldn’t say anything up anyone IRL as it’s absolutely none of my business, and, in the scheme of things it’s really not important 🤷‍♀️

Don’t flatter yourself OP. You asked a question, people are giving you their opinions - kind of the point of this forum Hmm hardly being overinvested. No need to pretend now you were only ‘pondering’ when clearly you had some quite strong and arrogant opinions throughout this thread. Also no need to try and belittle others’ opinions by making them out to be ‘overinvested’ as though you meant this as a lighthearted post - although from an arrogant and self-important poster like yourself I suppose it’s hardly a suprising response.
