McDonald’s in a hospital waiting room

AIBU to think I don’t care how hungry you are, you don’t eat McDonald’s in a hospital waiting room? Shock There are 2 adults eating it, so surely one can pop out and then they swap.

P.S. do you think I can ask for a chip?

Planning ahead maybe??

GinDaddy · 07/11/2019 14:50

People don't have the same sense of decorum and respect for others as years ago.

moobar · 07/11/2019 14:52

When I had DD a lady was brought into next bed. She was offered the tea and toast and said her partner had gone to get her a dominoes pizza. I thought wow, I don't know how she could eat that half an hour after birth. Amazing. The poor women ate it and it came straight back up.

The midwife was raging and said she was banning everything except toast from then on.

But yes, the smell!!

AmIThough · 07/11/2019 14:52

Surely it'd be cold if they did that?
But I do agree that you don't come pre-armed with a Maccies (or any food).

NeutralJanet · 07/11/2019 14:52

Depends, is it an A&E waiting room where they could be waiting hours and McDonald's is the best option nearby for a quick meal?

antisupermum · 07/11/2019 14:52

I don't understand why you think this is unacceptable. Is it because its a McDs or are you against eating in waiting rooms just generally? I've sat in waiting rooms for 90mins+ sometimes, which if you are very hungry is a very long time. Perhaps they have low blood sugar or other condition which requires they not go without food too long, and a McDs was the easiest, fastest option for them.

ThatMuppetShow · 07/11/2019 14:52

Some people cannot function if they are not munching on something every 15 minutes of the day.

ThatMuppetShow · 07/11/2019 14:53

because it absolutely stinks?

antisupermum · 07/11/2019 14:57

@ThatMuppetShow because it absolutely stinks?

That's totally relative to what they had from McDs, and a matter of opinion.

I might think someone eating a tuna sandwich absolutely stinks; doesn't mean its an unacceptable food choice.

DefConOne · 07/11/2019 14:58

YANBU. A sandwich would be less antisocial as wouldn’t smell. I was at the ballet with my mum once where a couple were eating fish and chips. I think people generally have become more selfish.

userabcname · 07/11/2019 15:00

Ooh yes I agree and have a similar tale: when I was pregnant with DS1, the first appointment was a group one with other pregnant women of around the same gestation (about 7 weeks), where they gave out general info and then booked in individual appointments at the end. Anyway, one woman arrived with her partner late and bearing McDonalds, which not only stank to high heaven but also meant we had to listen to the rustling / chewing during the talk from the midwife. It was gross. One woman pointedly mentioned her morning sickness to which Mrs Maccy D nodded sympathetically and said, "me too love!" while wolfing down her Big Mac. It was actually quite funny. I am very glad it didn't happen the following week though when my sickness kicked in as I'd have had to have left!

in a HOSPITAL waiting room, yes it does. Both your example do stink. I can't believe that people think it's remotely acceptable to eat that in hospital. Absolutely fine to grab a McDo on the way, but eat it somewhere else. Some people have just no manners.

AmIThough · 07/11/2019 15:03

@antisupermum a tuna sandwich would also be inappropriate.

If you're eating in a contained area where you have no idea why any other person is attending a medical appointment you should be extra considerate.

If you HAVE to eat, take a ham sandwich or something that doesn't smell

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/11/2019 15:07

Don’t be silly. It’s always appropriate to eat in a hospital waiting room unless there are signs to the contrary.

Schuyler · 07/11/2019 15:07

It’s an outpatient waiting room. The waiting times are on the board and it’s up to 60 mins for some doctors but I couldn’t say how long some people have to wait.

It does smell and it’s a confined space. One man is having a fillet o fish.

I’m really craving a McD’s milkshake now!

Depends on circumstances - i.e. how long they've been stuck there.

But generally, I don't agree with eating in indoor areas that aren't designated as eating areas. There is a sense, as a pp said, that many people can no longer wait any length of time to eat, and it's representative of the general decline in self-control that society is suffering from.

However, if they've been stuck there for hours, or have a medical need to eat, I wouldn't blame them and without knowing the circumstances, I wouldn't judge.

CaptainCallisto · 07/11/2019 15:08

Yesterday I sat in hospital for eight and a half hours with DS2. Probably five of those hours were spent in waiting rooms (A&E and then paediatric assessment) and I had nothing to eat. I usually pack a bag if we are heading into hospital, but we went in as an emergency so I had nothing - not even cash for the vending machine. If I'd been able to nip out for ten minutes to Maccy's and pay by card I would have; not because I'm selfish and unthinking, but because the hospital shop was closed and it was the only place I could have got food. As it was I couldn't leave him so I just went without (had my lunch break at work at 11.00, went in with DS at 2.30, got home after midnight and didn't eat for over twelve hours).

iamtinkabella · 07/11/2019 15:08

this sounds like jealously to meConfusedGrin

InsertFunnyUsername · 07/11/2019 15:09

Meh 🤷‍♀️

Schuyler · 07/11/2019 15:10

@iamtinkabella

There’s a little jealousy. Wink I could murder milkshake and maybe some McDonald’s fries now. Grin

Armbow45 · 07/11/2019 15:11

It's only unreasonable if they've failed to cater for the entire waiting room 😉

iamtinkabella · 07/11/2019 15:12

Ha, i could tooGrinBlush!

obviously · 07/11/2019 15:12

I actually couldn't care about this at all. I never understand the outrage people get simply because others choose to eat. It's just food.

I would also be very jealous that I didn't also have McDonald's Blush

MesmorisedByTheLights · 07/11/2019 15:13

YANBU.
If it's an outpatient WR, have your meals around your appointment time. It's rude and inconsiderate. Eating a snack if you have medical need to do so is fine.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 07/11/2019 15:13

I think you should sit beside them and start making retching noises, just fit fun. 😁
