McDonald’s in a hospital waiting room

AIBU to think I don’t care how hungry you are, you don’t eat McDonald’s in a hospital waiting room? Shock There are 2 adults eating it, so surely one can pop out and then they swap.

P.S. do you think I can ask for a chip?

I had a Burger King meal in the delivery suite after having stitches. I was in my own room though

Kbrooke08932 · 07/11/2019 17:22

I actually had a dominoes pizza after giving birth to my firstborn. I had. It had any food all day, ended up with an emergency section and was then left on my own (with husband and baby) for 6 hours in the recovery ward. No other patients about and the midwife who had been allocated to look after me was dealing with a difficult labour so saw her twice for 5 mins in that 6 hours. No tea and toast for me and I was starving! I don’t think you can judge without knowing the whole story! (I didn’t throw up)

LellyMcKelly · 07/11/2019 17:22

I normally take smoked salmon blinis and a magnum of Moët et Chandon to A&E. it can take a while to be seen and one doesn’t want to embarrass oneself with a rumbly tummy.

baubled · 07/11/2019 17:24

I legitimately thought it was because it made you want one Grin I think I'm on the fence with this one

tillytoodles1 · 07/11/2019 17:25

I was at a hospital appt the other day, a couple had brought plastic containers full of food and were munching away, They had sandwiches, cherry tomatoes and a load of other stuff. Every time I looked over, she was unwrapping something and passing some of it over to the man she was with.

I was there for ten minutes so I don't know how much more they had to eat.

Aridane · 07/11/2019 17:30

You are all very unreasonable in that you have made me hungry and I have now just ordered a takeaway (salt & pepper chicken wings and duck chow mein). Now just need to find a medical waiting room to eat it in Grin

PlasticPatty · 07/11/2019 17:32

So disappointed in this thread. I thought they were introducing McDonald's restaurants to hospital waiting rooms and I could be sure of a cup of tea in future.

Aridane · 07/11/2019 17:34

"I don't understand why you think this is unacceptable."

Because MN is full of bloodhounds who can smell hot food several post codes away.

Grin
Aridane · 07/11/2019 17:35

@PlasticPatty- clearly an untapped market! Maybe one for Boris in his election manifesto!

rainywinterday · 07/11/2019 17:41

15 years of working in hospitals here - there's almost always a McDonald's in drip stand pushing distance to the hospital - they know what they're doing! McDonald's is no more or less stinky than any other food and eating in waiting rooms is very very common. I don't see an issue.

littlehappyhippo · 07/11/2019 17:45

@rainywinterday

I don't see an issue either, and would happily sit munching a large fries and a medium diet coke, followed by a smarties mcflurry and a latte!

NeckPainChairSearch · 07/11/2019 17:46

Because MN is full of bloodhounds who can smell hot food several post codes away

And fabric conditioner. They smell that too.

bmbonanza · 07/11/2019 17:47

Dont see any problem myself - if it was a sandwich would you be bothered?

LaurieMarlow · 07/11/2019 17:47

When I gave birth, everyone in post natal had takeaways as the hospital food was inedible.

I don’t recall MD, but certainly KFC, curries. I had Giraffe Smile

MozzchopsThirty · 07/11/2019 17:48

I waited 11 hours in A&E once
I sent OH out for a subway or a macdonalds as they were close to the hospital

Don't see the problem

SnorkMaiden81 · 07/11/2019 17:49

I agree with you OP. It's inconsiderate and crass for all manner of reasons.

I boarded a flight last year and as soon as bums were in seats a whole group of people (a Hen Do I think, about 15 in total) began to produce bags and bags of KFC out of their hand luggage and tuck in! I was Shock

blubelle7 · 07/11/2019 17:50

Most of the naysayers are citing the smell as the problem. I literally have no sense of smell and even if I smell food, not bothered much by people eating anywhere but people seem to be very sensitive about this topic and I'm always baffled as to why. Is it not part of the public contract to accommodate a little discomfort caused by other people so that they reciprocate. It honestly is a minefield finding out what foods are inoffensive to people as I have always tried to stay away from the offenders like fish, takeaways etc., but when someone complained about my cucumber sandwiches and banana smelling - I gave up.

LynetteScavo · 07/11/2019 17:51

From the title I thought there was a McDonald's "restaurant" in the waiting room. That would be bloody genius in a large hospital.

Saxineno · 07/11/2019 17:51

YANBU

My local hospitals entrance is right next to McDonald's. At visiting times you see loads of people taking McDonald's in and that's not too bad.
But this instance is for a planned appointment at a set time. Eat earlier / later. Grab a snickers from the shop to get you through!

Serin · 07/11/2019 17:54

It's probably safer than the hospital sandwiches, which (IIRC) killed a few people over the summer.

berkshirecat · 07/11/2019 18:04

I do understand it's annoying having people eating smelly food around you but sometimes there is no choice. A few weeks ago DP and I ate a subway in a hospital waiting room; I had been there since 9am and was starving. It got to 2pm and the only way I wouldn't miss a scan (after waiting to see 2 different consultants) and then having to go back to another waiting room meant I had no choice... what was I supposed to do? Confused

InsertFunnyUsername · 07/11/2019 18:06

what was I supposed to do?

You were supposed to starve, Tis the only polite thing to do. People in public space always throw up/heave at any food that isn't plain bread. Did you not know?

Schuyler · 07/11/2019 18:08

@baubled

Oh I do want one! It smelt a bit and I thought it was a bit rude in a busy waiting room but I do want one. Blush

Schuyler · 07/11/2019 18:22

@berkshirecat

It was semi lighthearted. I was jealous of the chips, although not the fillet o fish which I think is one of the worst items on the menu! It was just hot and busy and crowded so I made a minor observation/complaint to MN. I’d never ever dream of actually taking offence as it didn’t offend me .

GTT testing whilst pregnant, required no food from the previous evening until after the test had finish (blood test, a glucose drink, wait 2 hours, blood test....the can eat!)

I'm sat in the waiting room with lots of other hungry, possible grim feeling pregnant ladies, when one of their partners waltzed in with bacon on toast and proceeded to devour it in front of us ladies who hadn't eaten in 12 hours......I honestly don't know how I didn't either commit murder or steal it!

Really rude and I thought really selfish as the clinic was specifically for that type of test and all the patients were fasting!
