After a very random boring conversation with a friend she thinks I'm some sort of slattern for never using it. I say it smells awful and no one's ever complained so why would I bother
Who is BU?

Yanbu

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/11/2019 08:04

YANBU if you don't want to. I find it makes clothes feel softer and smell nicer though!

dementedpixie · 07/11/2019 08:04

Use it or dont use it, it wouldn't bother me. I don't like the feel of clothes without it so do use it

TreacherousPissFlap · 07/11/2019 08:06

I have a sweaty teen so use the Dettol antibacterial juice, if he was a normally sweating member of the family I wouldn't bother at all - YANBU

BeanBag7 · 07/11/2019 08:06

I hate the feel of clothes without it. My SIL doesnt use fabric softener and she lent us some baby clothes they were so crunchy and hard I couldnt imagine dressing a baby in them! We live in a very hard water area, so maybe it's not so necessary elsewhere.

Beamur · 07/11/2019 08:07

I very much doubt anyone else can tell.
I prefer the way clothes feel with fabric softener but not everyone uses it. My MIL and my Granny thought it ruined towels and stopped them drying properly Grin

SerenDippitty · 07/11/2019 08:07

YANBU. I never use it, makes me itch even the eco ones and sensitive skin ones. I honestly feel no difference in my clothes.

EskewedBeef · 07/11/2019 08:07

It's not a thing for anyone else to worry about. It's personal preference, like some people don't like to put conditioner on their hair.

Trewser · 07/11/2019 08:07

I don't use it as it gives dd2 eczema.

I like the smell of the dettol one though and occasionally use that for bedding and towels.

icannotremember · 07/11/2019 08:07

I've never used one. It seems unnecessary. And it makes towels weird.

falcon5 · 07/11/2019 08:08

The smell is horrific. I wash things again that come back from houses where it is used. I also can't stand febreze zoflora etc. We live in a soft water area and a standard wash and dry leaves the clothes fine here.

DontLettuceBrexitLettuceRomain · 07/11/2019 08:09

My MIL and my Granny thought it ruined towels and stopped them drying properly

TBf This is true.

I don't use it. I live in a hard water area and notice zero difference. It's also SO much better for your machine. Fabric conditioner kills washing machines!

Comefromaway · 07/11/2019 08:10

I’ve never used it as dh and dd both have excema

fivecupsoftea · 07/11/2019 08:10

I don’t use it, my clothes are fine. I see it as just another product manufacturers try to sell us. Better for the environment not to use it - saves on plastic and water pollution.

LonelyCloud · 07/11/2019 08:10

I don’t use it. I don’t think it’s necessary.

FunOnTheBeach20 · 07/11/2019 08:10

I don’t use it.

clutchingon · 07/11/2019 08:11

You are going to get a split vote op. Loads of people
Use it and loads of people don't. It's up to you. It's personal preference. I live in a hard water area and have tried giving it up and adding vinegar but to be honest I just don't think the clothes smell as nice so always end up going back to it.

I do think it is worth washing without it occasionally though (with vinegar) to get the residue off your clothes and bedding.

sleepymummy2019 · 07/11/2019 08:12

My mum uses it and her towels always feel greasy to me. I’d rather have crispy cottons than sticky 🙂 YANBU, it’s personal choice

Greysparkles · 07/11/2019 08:12

My MIL and my Granny thought it ruined towels and stopped them drying properly

This is true!! It creates a sort of covering over the fibres making them far less absorbant. Soft yes, but bloody useless

LoyaltyBonus · 07/11/2019 08:12

I used it briefly to try and stop the static that caused skirts to stick to tights. It didn't and I noticed no other improvement. Other than that, in nearly 30 years of doing laundry I've never bothered and when friends do, sometimes their clothes make my eyes water

It does ruin towels

Trewser · 07/11/2019 08:13

It's completely unnecessary, of course, like a lot of the crap advertisers tell us we need.

LonelyCloud · 07/11/2019 08:13

@BeanBag7

The crunchy hard clothes might be down to how your SIL dries them?

If I dry my clothes outside on the line, they can end up much crunchier and harder than if I dry them in the tumble drier. They’re always much softer when dried in the tumble drier.

Angelika321 · 07/11/2019 08:13

I've started using just a dribble of fabric conditioner in my normal washing. It prevents static on light weight clothing. I hate skirts clinging to my legs. Towels coats etc get washed without any. I don't find any crunchiness if I tumble dry clothes regardless of if I use fabric conditioner or not.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 07/11/2019 08:14

I don't use it

I like my laundry just clean, not covered in chemicals

Ironing or tumble drying sorts any "crunchiness@Greysparkles

A towel that has been washed with conditioner does not absorb as well, I hate bring given a conditioned towel Grin it is pointless!

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/11/2019 08:14

I don't use it. It isn't necessary so why should you feel bad about it.
