After a very random boring conversation with a friend she thinks I'm some sort of slattern for never using it. I say it smells awful and no one's ever complained so why would I bother
Who is BU?

Makes things an unpleasant texture to me, though ( as usual) I’m sure I’m in the minority.
My mum uses it though, and I can never dry myself easily or quickly with her towels.

BumbleBeee69 · 07/11/2019 13:49

started using it again and didn’t notice a slimy feeling when I restarted.

me either Grin

BumbleBeee69 · 07/11/2019 13:50

I can never dry myself easily or quickly with her towels.

your not supposed to use it on certain fabrics, it states this on the bottles... and Towels is number one.

PigletJohn · 07/11/2019 14:32

Ginky

not different, but a more accurate name.

There are other chemicals with similar names, one of them quite dangerous.

PigletJohn · 07/11/2019 14:41

Ginky

this package says 25-50g per load. Some people say "halve the usual amount of powder and make it up with soda"

It's probably packed by this company. which also has guidance on the website. I think the factory is near Manchester

When I'm using it to clean out a washing machine, I use a full scopp of soda and no powder. When it foams up that's the old residue dissolving. it takes veral goes to clean it all out. Cotton Towels are good things to put through the cycle, because they withstand the hot wash, and, if white, you don't worry about fading. They come out better than they went in.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 07/11/2019 15:32

Thanks piglet that's really helpful. I will definitely have a go with them and see how it goes as Iv been wanting to stop using the liquid for ages as it's so bad for the longevity of the machine.

Firstawake · 07/11/2019 18:02

Does hard and soft water come into play here?

PigletJohn · 07/11/2019 18:21

I think so. If you've got soft water, or awater softener, there's not much point in fabsoft.

Except that some people like the smell

A tip: if you like to smell it, change your brand of powder and fabsoft frequently. You will get used to your normal brand and no longer notice it. I think this is why some people drench themselves in perfume with a watering can.

The rest of us can smell it.

BlueJava · 07/11/2019 18:44

YANBU it stinks! Or at least most brands do.

smugmug · 07/11/2019 19:49

I don't use it , I love the smell of line dried clothes and they don't achieve this nice fresh smell with conditioner , plus hate the extra chemicals

Besidesthepoint · 07/11/2019 23:10

I'm normally not an enviromental hippy but I really distrust that stuff. It irritates my skin, smells too chemically and does very little. That can't be a healthy thing to have that lingering on my clothes and being absorbed by my skin.

missanony · 07/11/2019 23:14

I don’t because then you don’t get a gungey tray to wash

DramaAlpaca · 07/11/2019 23:18

I can't bear the smell of fabric conditioner & never use it. I don't think it's necessary anyway, just more chemicals you don't really need in your life. And I love a nice, scratchy towel.

Grobagsforever · 07/11/2019 23:31

What? Does ANYONE under 50 use it?

Literally never have. Because my skin is not a fucking baby mouses, it can handle unmedicated cotton.

NobdieTheNob · 07/11/2019 23:39

I hate the stuff. I dry all my washing above the Aga. The towels are a bit stiff as a result, but they are warm and do their job.

TheSandman · 07/11/2019 23:48

Awful stuff. I HAVE to use it because I launder for a AirBnB and my customer wants it used on the towels - but other than that never.

PickAChew · 07/11/2019 23:51

I used to live in a very hard water area and used unscented fab con but since moving to a soft water area haven't touched it at all.

TheSandman · 07/11/2019 23:53

Thanks, @PigletJohn for that link. Bookmarked.

PickAChew · 07/11/2019 23:56

@Quietintheranks surcare or M&S sensitive. Pretty much identicsl and unscented.

Redland12 · 07/11/2019 23:56

I use white vinegar instead of FC, towels are useless when FC added, it coats them making them less absorbent. Using white vinegar also helps keep the machine in good order. So much cheaper too.

Aurignacian · 07/11/2019 23:59

Never use it, hate the overwhelming smell, soft water area so absolutely no need

Beveren · 08/11/2019 00:06

Never use it, our stuff comes out of the wash perfectly soft. Basically it's a total con and a waste of money.

Inebriati · 08/11/2019 00:11

I used to use it every wash, but this winter we bought a tumble dryer. I haven't had to use fabric softener, have the heating on, or clean the washing machine; so thats less chemicals I'm using.

Caplin · 08/11/2019 00:25

I never used it for years (decades), in both hard and soft water areas. Started using it a couple of years after the kids were born and it is a game changer (and I live in a soft water area).

No slimy feel, no weird smells. But everything feels cosy.

Countryescape · 08/11/2019 07:38

I love crunchy towels! Towels with fabric softener don’t dry your body.
