After a very random boring conversation with a friend she thinks I'm some sort of slattern for never using it. I say it smells awful and no one's ever complained so why would I bother
Who is BU?

OP posts:

If they are crunchy and hard they arent being rinsed properly.

Also towels are much nicer when a bit harder. They dry better.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 07/11/2019 08:14

No idea why @Greysparkles got tagged in that

New phone Grin

gamerchick · 07/11/2019 08:14

My MIL and my Granny thought it ruined towels and stopped them drying properly

It does though. It's not supposed to be used on towels.

Neither of you are wrong OP. It's a personal preference. I don't live in a hard water area and love my conditioner Grin

Malbecfan · 07/11/2019 08:15

I never use it. I use white vinegar instead. Less than a tablespoonful keeps clothes from going crunchy but means towels are still absorbent. In 12 years of running a holiday cottage and using it for the towels and bedding I have never had a complaint. Everything is also line-dried. YANBU

LoopyLu2019 · 07/11/2019 08:17

I use a splash of white vinegar. Doesn't make it smell of vinegar. Softens towels and clothes nicely. Sometimes I put a few drops of essential oils in for added scent.

WitsEnding · 07/11/2019 08:18

I don't use it, I don't like the smell or feel and we have soft water - in my mind if cloth smells of something artificial, it's not clean.

When my neighbour puts her sheets out to dry the smell is so penetrating I avoid going into my back garden; she is a smoker and I assume this why she needs to use scented products.

vjg13 · 07/11/2019 08:20

Never use on towels, see PP all true. I just use a tiny amount and find it sufficient.

BlindAssassin1 · 07/11/2019 08:21

I don't. The smell, whatever the price you pay, is awful, always cheap, nasty and eye watering. And it leaves a waxy film over everything even on a long wash.

I know there's a trend right now to spritz your made bed with fabric conditioner and water; must make climbing into bed a stinky waxy shit show.

Strugglingtodomybest · 07/11/2019 08:24

I don't use it, I used to because I thought you were supposed to, but stopped and the only difference is that my clothes don't reek of two different artificial scents now. Which is nice.

banivani · 07/11/2019 08:30

YANBU. Biggest cod ever. And YY to hating it when people use it on towels - so utterly pointless.

Janicejaniceahmfallin · 07/11/2019 08:31

YANBU - horrible chemical shite, terrible for the environment, leaves a slithery film on everything (inc the inside of your washing machine) and the smell is god awful. Yet another commercial bullshit thing we’ve been duped into thinking is necessary to be ‘clean’ or ‘fresh’. I agree, OP, if you and your clothes are washed, you’re good to go.

Goawayquickly · 07/11/2019 08:33

Very rarely use it, a bottle can last me a year. I do prefer my sheets softened but use a tiny bit. White vinegar in my towel wash.

tenbob · 07/11/2019 08:34

I have never bought a single bottle of the shite

I hate the slimy feeling of clothes when it’s been washed in it and the horrible synthetic smell.

It’s for people who think that walking into a house with the eye-stinging stench of chlorine gas from overuse of bleach makes them seem ‘clean’ and ‘fresh’

Reallybadidea · 07/11/2019 08:35

We have hard water. On the odd occasions that I haven't used it for some reason I can tell the difference as soon as I get the clothes out of the machine, they feel squeaky. Jeans in particular are more or less unwearable without it, with or without tumble drying. Clothes just feel scratchy.

I don't use much on towels, and pre rinse them to remove residue when I wash them. They still absorb very well.

billandbenflowerpotmen1 · 07/11/2019 08:36

I don't use it as hate the artificial smell. I can smell it on other peoples clothes when they pass too, even if they're wearing perfume. I like my clothes to smell of washing powder which, to me, smells 'clean' only rather than fake perfumed
I do live in a hard water area but my clothes don't feel extra crunchy or maybe I'm used to the feel

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 07/11/2019 08:39

I use it on some things, jeans and bed sheets mostly. Don't like a conditioned towel.

SilverySurfer · 07/11/2019 08:40

I've never used it, the smell is vile.

MarshaBradyo · 07/11/2019 08:42

It’s very out on mn people don’t like smelly stuff in general

I dislike it and have never bought it, it has a slimy feeling and I prefer crunchier clean towels

It was all the rage back in school though (boarding)

Appletreehouse · 07/11/2019 08:42

I had HG with Dd and the smell of washing powder or softener on any clothes and bedding used to make me sick, since then I've never used it. Both my kids have exzema too so not recommended. We don't miss it

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/11/2019 08:43

I never use it.

Used to make my DS itch when he was a child, so stopped and have never felt the need to go back to it. (He's 36 now, so haven't used it for about 3 decades). Like others I found that absorbency (towels) was better without it, and to me it didn't add much to the feel or smell of clothes anyway. Getting the smell of sweat out it enough - don't need orange blossom or whatever put in.

MouseMartin · 07/11/2019 08:46

Disgusting stuff so I am pleased to hear you are not using it.

LellyMcKelly · 07/11/2019 08:47

It stinks. No matter what they call the fragrance - ylang ylang, moonstone, fresh daffodils, or whatever, it just smells of fake chemicals.

Youngatheart00 · 07/11/2019 08:47

Very hard water here (bad for kettles!) so do put a splash in with most washes. Tend to use one for sensitive skin so not overly perfumed. If I don’t use it, clothes feel like cardboard.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/11/2019 08:49

Don’t use it. Renders towels useless for one thing. Not died yet, lol

PlumkinPie · 07/11/2019 08:49

I think this depends on where you live. Much easier to not use if you live in a soft water area. In a hard water area your clothes can very easily feel like cardboard
