Aibu to switch off the broadband CF Neighbours

Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 22:45

So long story short aibu to switch off my router as we have kindly let next door use the internet as theirs was down.

The mother (who has not so much as said hello since we moved here) sent her son round last Saturday to ask and my dp said yes, I have checked our settings and they are hooked up to a fire stick and about 3 phones.

I’m not being unreasonable to think if we let her use it she won’t get her own internet sorted out if she has access to ours - I suspect it is due to a billing issue as the mother is constantly having very late nights as my dp will hear her and her friends still up at 5.30am when he gets up. I will also add the mother does work.

Aibu? I do feel a bit guilty on her kids 😣

Tartan it is a risk to OP. The neighbours may be downloading child porn, googling how to build bombs or poison people, and if something illegal is discovered, it will be traced back to the OP who will be in trouble - despite being entirely innocent - because it's her internet account.

You are the CF neighbour, aren't you?

PeachesPlumsPears · 06/11/2019 23:25

This seems really stingy. What harm is it doing you? English people are so un-neighbourly.

Very naive comment.

A quick google will explain why you shouldn't share.

askleo.com/is_it_safe_to_share_my_internet_connection_with_my_neighbor/

The one I would worry about is:
If your neighbor were to begin downloading copyrighted or illegal material, or performing other illegal activity online, that could be traced back to your internet connection Imagine being questioned and investigated by police.

Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 23:25

@OneBigMother wow now I am seriously concerned. I didn’t even know you could do stuff like that!

@HappyHammy I have logged into my normal sky account but it doesn’t give me an option to change but when I enter it into google to says about entering the IP address and admin password. This page also tells me who is connected to the broadband but doesn’t give me an option to disconnect devices or block them

HappyHammy · 06/11/2019 23:28

I googled how to change sky router password and there are instructions, have you looked at that. You have to type in a code number into the browser. I cant link the page but it came up at the top of the page. Does it affect your data usage.

Ginfordinner · 06/11/2019 23:28

Then I would switch it off until you can talk to them tomorrow

OneBigMother · 06/11/2019 23:28

Neither did I. I was pretty bloody shocked.
I think, if I were you, I'd turn off the outer and call Sky, they have 24hour support.

OneBigMother · 06/11/2019 23:28

Router.

Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 23:29

@HappyHammy yes I have tried all that but it doesn’t let me successfully log in so best bet is to ring tomorrow and have them talk me through it. The box is off now and will be until I can change the password

HappyHammy · 06/11/2019 23:31

Good call. Keep it turned off, they can use their mobiles as hotspots. CF. Annoying that you cant use it but better to be safe.

UrsulaPandress · 06/11/2019 23:35

@TartanMarbled

Yeah. Them bloody English eh?

FuckingWaffleDoggy · 06/11/2019 23:35

If you have an Ethernet cable you can connect a lap top directly to the router and change it that way, I had to do that when I was a doofus and licked me and everyone else out of our sky broadband Blush

Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 23:36

Defo is! I have 50gb of data with my plan so it doesn’t make much difference to me. When I switched it off I was picturing the mother getting to a seriously good bit in a film she was watching and then I’ve gone and turned off the internet 🤣 bet I was all the c*nts under the sun 🤣

OP posts:
Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 23:38

@FuckingWaffleDoggy it’s getting a bit technical for me now! I think I have the cables plugged into the router but I’ll have to double check, sure there’s supplier will help me sort it tomorrow

I wouldn’t mention anything !!

This woman hasent even had the decency to say hello to you and has the cheek to be using your WIFI willy nilly !?!

Change the password ASAP! If they want WiFi they have to buy WiFi !

If they want it free - tell them to go to McDonald’s like everyone else.

FuckingWaffleDoggy · 06/11/2019 23:40

The Ethernet cable should have come with the router, at least ours did.!you have the power lead, the one that goes in the phone socket then the third that can plug into the router then into a laptop or pc. That would bypass the need for a password. You can google that too, that's how I did it , I'm not hugely tech savvy either.

Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 23:45

It says online that if the password doesn’t work then I need to check the router as it may be a different one on the box itself. I’ll have to check it in the morning, at least I can sleep soundly knowing there’s no illegal activity going on from my connection tonight! Bloody imagine the police rocking up and taking you down the station to quiz you about something like that 😱 all for the sake of doing a good deed!

Yep thats fine but you have to turn off the wi-fi or its still operating!.

Even if your still connected by Ethernet or CAT 5 cable.

If your router login details were on the default settings then I'm guessing your CF neighbours have changed your password (they can easily access the router from their end).

If they have changed the login details you will not get a confirmation email informing you of this. You also can't change your login from your Sky account.

You don't need to contact your ISP.

  • Type 192.168.0.1 into your browser.
  • Username: admin (note: lowercase).
  • Password: sky (note: lowercase).

If this fails to work, locate your router and find a reset button on the back or side (it might be one which requires a pin/pen to press it in).

  • Press and hold the reset button for at least 15 seconds (the lights on the router should start flashing to indicate the reset).
  • Switch off the router and leave it off for at least a minute (this flushes the connection).
  • Switch router back on and you should be able to login as per the details above.
  • You should now have access to the router and be able to change the login details (I recommend "fuckyou" for the username and "cheekyfuckers" for the password, but it's up to you).

Hope that helps. And tell your CF neighbours to sod off!

worriedmumtoteen · 06/11/2019 23:46

Try to change your password - good clear instructions

Justaboy · 06/11/2019 23:48

Possibly if your caught downloading child porn but most everythig else they don't seem that bothered Any reall clued up terror-wrist will be using a secure VPN or similar anyway.

Wi-fi isnt that secure the WPA2 standard is now crackable a mate of mine does this just for the hell of it! no malicious intent.

WhatTimeDoYouCallThis · 06/11/2019 23:49

Hello, my tech. support (DP) says try this (I had a go, it works!). Go to any web browser and in the address bar type 192.168.0.1 press enter. This will take you to your router login page. Click on Wireless in the menu bar, a pop up will ask you for user name and password. User is admin (lower case) pword is sky (lower case). Scroll down to WPA2-PSK Security Encryption and the Network key is the password for your wifi. to change it click in the password box and type in a password of your choice. Lower down click Apply and ... Done! CF sorted.

Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 23:55

@malpa @whattimedoyoucallthis

I think the bastards have changed it. I enter the username and password into the floating box that comes up and it doesn’t even do anything it just says about the password being unencrypted. I’ll be so annoyed if this is the case!! I’m actually getting up out of bed to go and switch it back on to see if I can get it sorted! I’ll post a screenshot of what it shows me when I type in the details

Cheekyneighbour · 06/11/2019 23:57

Massive lesson learned here!

Sure you havent chaged it and forgotten or accidently reset it?.

Easily done!

Cheekyneighbour · 07/11/2019 00:01

Surely if they had changed the password though, I’d be logged out of any and all devices with the old password I used to log in?

Here’s what it shows me when I have entered the details
