To object to a religious song at a baby class?

SecondTimer2019 · 06/11/2019 11:22

I take my baby (6mo) to a baby sensory class and this week the theme was 'rainbows'. At the end one of the songs played was 'Who put the colours in the rainbow?', which I remember from my childhood.

It asks who created all the amazing things in the world and ends by saying things like 'It can't be chance' and 'God made all of these'.

I'm not religious and think this environment should be secular. Obviously my baby can't understand the lyrics yet but I still feel it is inappropriate.

I'm thinking of contacting the organisers to let them know my feelings.

Kids and teens most certainly are more anxious today, that’s fact

And please provide factual evidence (that’s not your opinion) that this is caused by a lack of singing religious songs.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 15:56

Yes-that’s exactly what I mean. Default male. Default white. Default Christian.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 16:00

Criardo-Perez’s work is fascinating, MindyStClaire. Do you follow her on Twitter? Very cute dog!

MindyStClaire · 11/11/2019 16:02

I do, Bert. Agree, it's fascinating. Have her book downloaded but I haven't been able to bring myself to read it, I know it will just make me so angry...

We'll have to disagree about the dog though, I'm very much not a dog person - DD's love of goggoggs (she's 1) is something I take very personally. Grin

Emmapeeler1 · 11/11/2019 16:07

I get why you are a bit bothered by this, I would have been too. Apart from anything else it’s a terrible hymn.

CTRL · 11/11/2019 16:09

If you don’t like the songs; don’t bloody go !?! It’s simple really

Why on earth should the group stop singing religious songs because you don’t like it.

Some people think they are more important than they really are. Get over yourself OP

CTRL · 11/11/2019 16:14

If you don’t like mentioning GOD, then simply shut your mouth when that part of the song comes up Confused

What you think your daughter will of a sudden become corrupt because she’s hearing about GOD ?

What about when she starts school ?
You think NOBODY will mention GOD to her ?

You think she’s going to burst into flames is she - dare I say it - speaks of GOD !?!

People !?!Hmm

MindyStClaire · 11/11/2019 16:15

If you don’t like the songs; don’t bloody go !?! It’s simple really

But she didn't know there would be a religious song! It's not a religious group, that's the whole bloody point.

She'd gone in, same as every other week, grabbed a spot on the mat, sang "Say hello to the sun" and then found herself being expected to sing about how God made rainbows without any allowance for the fact that half the room might disagree with that assertion for one reason or another.

Blondebombsite83 · 11/11/2019 16:37

I find it ridiculous that people still think religion can just be shoe horned in anywhere as a totally unproven ideology. I’d have probably just sung the word science over the word god, because unfortunately it’s hard enough to run these groups without having to vet every song. So while YANBU I also think you can just quietly disapprove unless it becomes a regular thing.

Lifeover · 11/11/2019 16:47

Get a grip. God is mentioned everywhere.up to you if you believe God did or didnt put the colours in a rainbow. But at the end of the day you can just view it as a nice song,

Do you kick off at songs mentioning angels, devils, ghosts, Egyptian gods, any spiritual
Reference etc

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/11/2019 16:55

Good god woman...

Yup you definitely hear the G word every day. I even worked for the church for a few years and I didn’t ‘catch the God’.

TurOlive · 11/11/2019 17:01

@rainbowvalley17

Why would singing who out the colours in the rainbow make kids less anxious but wheels on the bus or something wouldn't?

rainbowvalley17 · 11/11/2019 17:16

What about when kids are lied to about the tooth fairy and Father Christmas. Are they seriously damaged when they find out the truth?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/11/2019 17:22

This might sound very sad... but the song about the sausages sizzling in a pan (going pop and bang) bothered me as a small primary I child (I was 3) and there was one about birds flying over the hill and far away (I thought they were dying, they probably were).

And as for nursery stories - Grim didn’t begin to describe some of them!

CravingCheese · 11/11/2019 17:23

Bertrand

I would agree if this was explicitly advertised as a secular class.
just as I would agree with somebody being offended by a lack of religious content in a baby class explicitly advertised as religious.

But that doesn't seem to apply to the OP's class.

I would therefore expect it to vaguely reflect our society. Which religion happens to be a part of... You and the OP really are in a similar category as Christians that complain about a lack of religion in a non-religious context. Fairly tedious and unreasonable imo.

As for those talking about the concept of assumed Christianity or a drop drop effect..

This was not a Christian song. No mention of Jesus, Mary, the Trinity, an apostle... Nothing specific to Christianity. The concept of a 'creator creating the rainbow' is actually found in the vast majority of religions.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/11/2019 17:26

It’s a bit easier than explaining how it actually works (as our dad used to do to our 😳😳😳😳🤔 faces) - last face was my big sister who was very smart. He did explain double and reversed rainbows, and why the sky looks blue (and other colours) to me though later and I actually understood. He also explained electricity nicely. He was a smart man (and an atheist).

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 11/11/2019 17:37

And surely Sing a Rainbow is the first song about rainbows to come into your mind?

Funny you should mention that song. Drove me mad as a child for being WRONG. There is no pink in a rainbow. It's red orange yellow green blue indigo violet.

HeronLanyon · 11/11/2019 17:40

My dad was similar and he and my mum showed us rainbows just with a garden hose and a bit of sunlight. No need for god to get involved anywhere.

woodhill · 11/11/2019 17:41

Love to know what song they are singing this week OP Smile

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/11/2019 17:41

It reminds me of my scary ballet teacher - she just screamed ‘toes toes TOESSSS’ as me and made my cry because she wasn’t being specific enough. I didn’t know what to do with my toes. I still remember hey playing that sodding song on a little record player.

I could only have been 3 years and 1 month max because my grandpa was still alive (he refused let me go back - see below).

I took the wallpaper scissors to my leotard...

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 17:54

@CravingCheese-

Are you seriously suggesting that a song has to mention Jesus, Mary, the Trinity or an apostle before it can be classified Christian? That’ll rule out a significant number of Hymns A&M then!

TurOlive · 11/11/2019 18:09

@rainbowvalley17

Can you explain how singing non-religious songs instead of religious songs make children anxious and depressed?

CravingCheese · 11/11/2019 18:13

Well then, what makes this song specifically Christian?

And more importantly, how would it exclude people from other faiths??

FleasAndKeef · 11/11/2019 18:30

OP I'm actually with you on this one. I have a 6 month old and I think I would have had exactly the same response! However I'm not sure I would question it if it was a one off. If it became a regular thing I would probably just find another class.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 18:30

Well, I don’t think any of the major faiths in this country refer to God in that way. It is a well known children’s hymn used in Christian circles.
And I have to say your posts are a masterclass in Christian privilege! (I don’t know if you are a
Christian or not, by the way. It makes no difference.
