To object to a religious song at a baby class?

SecondTimer2019 · 06/11/2019 11:22

I take my baby (6mo) to a baby sensory class and this week the theme was 'rainbows'. At the end one of the songs played was 'Who put the colours in the rainbow?', which I remember from my childhood.

It asks who created all the amazing things in the world and ends by saying things like 'It can't be chance' and 'God made all of these'.

I'm not religious and think this environment should be secular. Obviously my baby can't understand the lyrics yet but I still feel it is inappropriate.

I'm thinking of contacting the organisers to let them know my feelings.

“ Our local toddler group is run by church volunteers who give up their free time.”
And I presume there is a Christian element?

Alsohuman · 08/11/2019 20:37

All this faux concern about other faiths is just a cover for religious intolerance.

BertrandRussell · 08/11/2019 20:42

I just mentioned other faiths as an additional point. My main concern is that groups which have a religious element should make it clear what the are. And it should be possible to assume that groups without faith affiliations are religion free.

woodhill · 08/11/2019 20:52

Yes it is run by volunteers in a church building.

What about if they include a Trigger Warning just in case word god is mentioned?

FrankenCat · 08/11/2019 21:04

Whilst I agree in principle, as I'm as unreligious as they come, I kind of don't see any harm in singing the occasional song as long as you explain at home that "some people believe X and others believe Y, whereas some believe Z" etc. "Mummy doesn't believe X, Y or Z, and you can make your mind up when you're ready to".

I don't mind singing the odd hymn at a wedding or funeral. But I don't take part in the Lord's Prayer or by saying Amen after prayers etc. I feel like I would be disrespecting someone's belief to go along with a prayer when I don't believe in it. The same way as I feel I would be disrespecting other religions if I were to find myself in a situation where they were praying.

So the occasional song for kids, I think teaches religious tolerance and how to deal with these situations when they are older.

Nope, me neither.

ReanimatedSGB · 08/11/2019 23:27

@Woodhill. TBH I don't know what the groups are like now as DS is 15.. We have some Muslim community groups open to 'all faiths and none' but I think these are more for isolated elderly people or the very poor.

@Babdoc
With all the stresses on children and teens in the modern world, it is greatly beneficial to their well being to know that they are loved and valued by God

For me and many others, it had the opposite effect.

I agree, but it’s apparently better to have no mention of God at all......no wonder kids these days suffer more depression and anxiety than ever before. I’ve no doubt there’s a connection.

Yes indeed. Indoctrination far preferable to allowing children to choose their own path.

TurOlive · 09/11/2019 21:27

You think kids are depressed because they don't sing songs about god making rainbows? Hmm

CravingCheese · 09/11/2019 23:09

One fairly neutral mention of God. Not necessarily related to Christianity nor with some strong or obvious message about morality.
I personally really don't see an issue.

Pretty much any song will be objectionable to someone so unless you're advocating no songs at all (well, at least none with lyrics)?

Catsandchardonnay · 09/11/2019 23:18

So who did put the colours in the rainbow OP if it wasn’t God? Do you have an answer to that?

TurOlive · 09/11/2019 23:25

Why does someone have to have put them there?

Alsohuman · 09/11/2019 23:33

How else did they get there? Magic?

TurOlive · 09/11/2019 23:47

Or physics maybe?

Excited101 · 10/11/2019 00:00

You are kidding?! Of course no one ‘put them there’ it’s bloody science, look it up! 🤦‍♀️

ButterTarts · 10/11/2019 01:19

Are there even really any colours in a rainbow? Colour doesn't really exist outside of the mind, just different frequencies of radiation.

Tbh I don't fancy writing a song about it.

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/11/2019 01:52

Oh, that this too,
Too sullied thread would melt,
Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew,

from WorldEndingFire on another thread.

I teach religious studies, philosophy and ethics to undergraduate level and haven't yet 'caught God'.
Get a grip, it is a song for babies...if you want to challenge the inherent problems of inductive logic contained within the song, feel free; but to object to something so innocuous really does mark you out to be quite simple minded. My Year 7's know that simply discussing something does not make them believers, otherwise History lessons would be creating a fascinating combination of Nazi sympathisers with a Tudor like hatred of the French and Spanish.

rainbowvalley17 · 10/11/2019 14:14

Basically yes.

TurOlive · 10/11/2019 14:17

Then you have a gross misunderstanding of depression.

BertrandRussell · 10/11/2019 14:19

“ but to object to something so innocuous really does mark you out to be quite simple minded.”

Ah yes- all those insults and all that mockery being thrown at Christians.....

CravingCheese · 10/11/2019 14:45

Bertrand
Do you believe that they should sing songs that won't offend anyone's sensibilities?
