Or, he would, if he were to find himself in that situation. Having previously insulted the medical knowledge and expertise of a leading neurologist, he now advises ignoring fire service advice, saying those who died in Grenfell lacked common sense and should have left the building. AIBU to say this man's ignorance is an embarrassment and he is unfit for public service?

Couldn't find anything about the neurologist issue though, can you link please.

I agree with you btw that his comments are unacceptable.

longwayoff · 05/11/2019 11:06

Sorry, can't link from my phone but google Rees Mogg Dr David Nicoll for more smuggery.

I think when you are above the 20th floor in a building full of smoke with young children, it must have been an extremely difficult decision to make. They must have been so scared. By all accounts the stairwell was pitch black, full of smoke and extremely hard to breathe in there. In those circumstances, I think stay put and hope help can get to you is the common sense approach.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/11/2019 11:15

YANBU. The man is an idiot. Well no he’s not at least an idiot has got compassion and a bit of sense.
I’m sure all those poor souls just stayed trapped in Grenfelll tower for a laugh
I’m sure they were relishing dying in the worse possible terror and agony.

What sort of wankers have we got running our Country.Halloween Angry. Doesn’t even come close to how I feel.’
Oh and more great news. They’ll be voted back in in December and we’ll have another 5 years (at least) of them. Just when I thought life couldn’t get any better.
If he’s got no pity for those in Grenfell not only the deceased but their families and the survivors who have to relive the terror constantly. He should be sacked, because he shouldn’t be in power.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/11/2019 11:17

The victim blaming shit head, and That’s me being polite!!

longwayoff · 05/11/2019 11:30

O, god it's so bloody depressing isnt it? And he just adds insult to injury, those poor Grenfell families and everyone even tangentially affected, such a tragedy for everyone. RM is disgusting. He should retire to Somerset and spend his time fiddling with his funds. I think you've been very moderate @awlookatmybabyspider

I’ll always remember as clear as day some bloke saying “Why did we wake them up those in the top floor. They had no chance. We should have just let them die “peacefully” in their sleep (smoke inhalation). I agreed with him.
I’m paraphrasing but words to that effect.

Beveren · 05/11/2019 11:54

Of course YANBU. And he's part of the government that drastically cut down funding for the fire service. The bottom line is that he and his mates care not one jot for anyone of what they perceive to be a lower social and financial status to their own: they're not bothered about ensuring that the population has adequate housing, medical care, safety, protection against crime, or education, and the inevitable consequence is that they're not actually bothered about the deaths of the hoi polloi.

MaxNormal · 05/11/2019 11:55

He's a cunt.

GrouchyKiwi · 05/11/2019 11:56

I thought this would be news that he was quitting politics. Alas. It's just more arseholery from a man who has no compassion.

loobyloo1234 · 05/11/2019 11:58

Despise him with every ounce of my body. Why would he care about those people? They weren't rich? He's despicable. How can he blame it on common sense when they were following the protocol set

The people to blame for Grenfell are the people signing off that cladding.

Rees-Mogg is a monacle wearing toff joke

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/11/2019 12:00

No such luck, Grouchy. He’ll be Prime Minister as well. Just thought I’d try and cheer you all up on such a dismal thread

Lonelycrab · 05/11/2019 12:02

@MaxNormal has it.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 05/11/2019 12:06

Rees Mogg would never be in a building with unsafe cladding, because they wouldn't be penny pinching around a building where rich people live.

The Grenfell whitewash inquiry has cost 100 times more than the amount saved on cladding. 72 lives lost, but they can say they've ticked some boxes and learned some lessons scapegoated the fire service.

Ponoka7 · 05/11/2019 12:08

The story of the five year old who slipped on the stairs and let go of the neighbours hand has stayed with me.

His death was a tragedy and i can't imagine life is anywhere near good for that neighbour or the boys family. I think he was found, dead by one of the firemen who hasn't been able to return to active duty.

The Tory leaders, day after day, tell us what they are and what they think of the general public, yet WC people still vote for them. People who say they have morals, vote for them. I know people, here in Liverpool, who support Boris, even though they know how much he despises the people of Liverpool.

I can't understand why we accept these people.

Curlysurprise · 05/11/2019 12:13

Forms, Jacob Rees Mogg encapsulates everything that is wrong with our current government. He is a self-entitled snob, who is In politics for self advancement and not as any public service.

I am not by any means a leftie, but he has , almost single-handedly destroyed any faith I may ever have had in the Tories.
I could rant on, but you get my drift.

Curlysurprise · 05/11/2019 12:14

Sorry For me, not Forms

He should be sacked. Vile comments

BlooperReel · 05/11/2019 12:18

The man is an arrogant, condescending worm. People died in those stairwells trying to 'use their common sense', shows how much he knows. Absolute muppet.

OneOfTheGrundys · 05/11/2019 12:27

As is often the case, offhand comments reveal more the true depth of ignorance, selfishness and entitlement of people like JRM than any commons speech. What a despicable specimen of humankind.

Ravenrob · 05/11/2019 12:27

What a horrible man. Obviously you would stay put as the fire service suggest rather than take on many flights of stairs in the dark and thick smoke.

Screwtheclockchange · 05/11/2019 12:28

Vile man.

Also, we have the benefit of hindsight but it's easy to imagine a slightly different scenario where people ignored advice to stay and that turned out to be the wrong choice. In that case, the likes of JRM and the Sun, Mail etc would no doubt be demonizing them as selfish, panicking animals callously trampling over their dying neighbours (remember the Hillsborough coverage?).

SchadenfiendeUnmortified · 05/11/2019 12:29

How foolish of these poor people to take the advice of the Fire Service.

And how foolish of the Fire Service to assume that buildings that house vulnerable people - elderly, children, disabled - or indeed ANY people, will not be made of incendiary materials.

Everybody's fault except that of the government or the builders, obviously.

It has disgusted me the way that government spokespersons are throwing the blame for this horror not the Fire Service. These men and women risk their lives to try to save others. The advice they give is based on "common sense" - or what would be common sense if buildings weren't build as fire traps to save a few quid. Bastards!
