To think fireworks should not be for sale to the general public

Maybe I just live in a crap area where kids let them off in the street and throw them at people. But people buying them and using them like utter cretins seems to be on the rise.
Aibu to think they should be for organised displays only?

Totally agree the sale to private individuals should be banned. Organised displays only in my view.

Time to ban garden bonfires, too.

I know I'm in a banning mood but fires and fireworks are dangerous by definition and it's crazy that either are allowed in private postage stamp gardens.

Anoni · 04/11/2019 10:06

I disagree with a complete ban but would suggest only silent fireworks or fireworks under 100 decibels can be sold to memebers of the public, this will help with the issue of animals being scared by the loud noises while still letting people enjoy a small personal back garden display.

Anything above 100 decibels or not silent will be restricted to public displays, which could only occur the weekend before bonfire night, 1 day before, on the day and the day after. There would be strict restrictions in place on who could buy them, including becoming licenses, attending a yearly training course etc

Whattodoabout · 04/11/2019 10:08

YANBU, I have said this for years.

Emergency service workers understandably hate this time of year, so many unnecessary accidents caused by fireworks. They are effectively a weapon and should not be used by untrained civilians. They’re also antisocial as hell...

Professional displays are sufficient, nobody needs to buy and use them in their back garden.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/11/2019 10:15

So.................................................... so very many posters wanting to live in a world with so many personal restrictions! No matter that fireworks are indeed dangerous, have a care with what you wish for. Totalitarian states are no fun!

Today you come for fireworks, tomorrow...?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/11/2019 10:36

Today you come for fireworks, tomorrow...?

Chinese lanterns, please!

slipperywhensparticus · 04/11/2019 11:22

My neighbours set fire to the garden including the neighbour's garden with a bonfire so maybe a few restrictions would go well such as banning people from setting an old sofa and mattress on fire when we were having a heatwave and we have had no rain for 12 weeks.....

Just a thought 😁

Stealthymcstealth · 04/11/2019 18:50

I just can't fathom why people's enjoyment of pretty lights and loud noises trumps the enormous amount of distress and damage they cause. Dementia patients thinking they are back in the war, people with PTSD having flashbacks, wild animals running scared into traffic. I wonder how many animals will die this year? I wonder if an elderly patient with dementia or PTSD will get through only being traumatised or maybe their heart will give out? Care workers and pet owners dread this time of year. You have a legal right to look at your pretty fucking noisy lights though so fuck anyone else eh.

kenandbarbie · 04/11/2019 18:54

Well they aren't sold to the general public in Ireland. Doesn't stop youths setting them off though.

Dramaofallama · 04/11/2019 19:00

Yanbu. I absolutely hate them.

crankysaurus · 04/11/2019 20:23

YABNU. I've signed the petition but we'll just get the same flannel we do every year and nothing will change till something tragic happens (even more than dead animals and injuries to people).

Well I’ve just been ‘entertained’ on twitter with the sight of some idiot clamping a rocket between his bum cheeks as his mate sets it alight.

Yes - the rocket launched and it flew up onto the air, and burst into a thousand little stars as the launcher took a bow to his amazed and appreciative audience ...

Not. His shirt got singed before his backside was covered in a red hot shower of flames, as he ran around the back yard trying to escape the burn (like a dog chasing its tail). I hope he’s in the US and gets a big medical bill (because he will need some medical attention).

Dramaofallama · 04/11/2019 20:54

A couple of years ago, my friend who works in A&E had to treat a teenager with special needs with severe burns to his hands and minor ones to his torso and face.
Apparently some teenagers told him to keep hold of a firework and lit it for a 'joke'.

Stealthymcstealth · 04/11/2019 21:51

When you point out the harm that can be done when fireworks are in the wrong hands it is always just met with the chorus of "Why should the many be penalised because of the actions of the few?" and breeze past the harm they themselves cause with their controlled displays, they are damaging when misused but also when used as intended.

EveningLight · 04/11/2019 21:58

My 16 year old horse died of a heart attack the only night fireworks went off near her field (unexpected wedding party in very rural area) .
I’d be in favour of a middle ground - limiting the sound level they make as I don’t enjoy loud noises either and would be glad if the noisy ones were limited

Loaf90 · 04/11/2019 21:59

YANBU

crosstalk · 05/11/2019 00:41

YANBU I lived in a rural area. The fireworks went on from Halloween to NYE and beyond, to say nothing of rural wedding parties. It was a valley, so anyone having one anywhere reverberated around. Nearest neighbours would warn, and I kept an eye on the usual public display, so I could monitor and treat nervy dog and livestock. It was the unexpected ones that were the bastards - they could be a mile off and still disturb.

I love fireworks, and went to a number in France where it seems to be limited to public displays which are beautifully orchestrated. But I don't see why they should be in private hands and so noisy.

Gottagetout · 05/11/2019 20:29

YANBU
Four stories on my FB newsfeed already about fireworks being thrown at the emergency services.
I don't care if someone thinks I'm a fun sponge, or if someone can't have a fireworks party at home and can't have 'fun' and have to go to an organised display. This shit needs to stop. It's fucking ridiculous. It obviously cannot be policed effectively can it, so something needs to be done.

TWD89 · 05/11/2019 20:32

100% agree.

I just don’t think they have a place in modern society (organised and hopefully licensed displays aside)

SafetyAdvice0FeedWhenAgitated · 05/11/2019 20:37

I’d be in favour of a middle ground - limiting the sound level they make as I don’t enjoy loud noises either and would be glad if the noisy ones were limited

Absolutely agree with that. They are getting louder and louder. However, big fan. Of the lights. Have enjoyed AMAZING display by a house nearby.

Iwantacookie · 05/11/2019 20:38

Yanbu.
From October to January theres always a few every night.

Then those absolute idiots who set them off in the day? Why? If you want to waste your money send it to me instead

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/11/2019 19:53

I’ve heard of fire crews having this (and being shot at in the US) but allowing the world and his/her numpty to buy them is just plain.irresponsible.

To think fireworks should not be for sale to the general public
JacquesHammer · 07/11/2019 08:45

I posted this on another thread.

Things on our local FB today (so yesterday now!):-

Smashed house window from massive rocket.
Smashed greenhouse window from rocket.
Horse with severe cuts to eye following panic over noise.
Dog on lead in garden (with owner) panicking, breaking lead and running away.

As soon as your “fun” doesn’t give others the chance to opt out, then there’s a problem.

In addition last night I was driving on the motorway about 8.30ish and fireworks were being lobbed onto the road.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/11/2019 08:47

I saw a report of a horse impaled after being spooked. There is just no need for them.

JacquesHammer · 07/11/2019 08:54

I should probably clarify that the first four examples seemed to be nothing more than people enjoying fireworks in what they thought was a careful manner.

And there is the crux. You might think you’re entitled to fireworks if you’re careful but the wider implications should be considered.
