To think fireworks should not be for sale to the general public

Maybe I just live in a crap area where kids let them off in the street and throw them at people. But people buying them and using them like utter cretins seems to be on the rise.
Aibu to think they should be for organised displays only?

I’ve been effing and jeffing all week because of this. It’s absolute madness that they’re still for sale to the general public.

recrudescence · 03/11/2019 14:45

Strongly agree. Dog also strongly agrees.

Cornettoninja · 03/11/2019 14:47

I would fully support a limitation on the more powerful ones available for public purchase.

Ideally I’d like them all only available to buy under licence as above but I get people like they’re own and truthfully a few fizzy things, a couple of sparklers and a Catherine wheel aren’t overly intrusive. It’s the ones trying to emulate a bomb or sonic boom that are really anti-social.

We all know that there’s no effective way to police their use so the only thing left is to curtail them at the point of sale. It may very well be a few spoiling it for the many but what other options are there?

Cornettoninja · 03/11/2019 14:48

They’re=their Hmm

Chocolatemouse84 · 03/11/2019 14:52

Yanbu and I think only within the week of bonfire night (so both the weekends and nights in between) and from 6pm until 10pm so they aren't randomly going off.
I work in a mental health hospital and the nights fireworks go off are very distressing for some of our patients who don't know what is going on. Also some animals find it so distressing, I don't think the fun of fireworks is worth the trauma.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 03/11/2019 14:52

YANBU. Where I am we have them going on from before Diwali (27 Oct) onto after Bonfire Night, sometimes carrying on until gone midnight.

checkoutchick22 · 03/11/2019 14:53

I agree that the sale needs to be restricted to stop anti social behaviour, but I'm also a host of a fireworks party every other year or so, and we enjoy this, in our large garden with consideration to safety of people and property.
We tend to invite our neighbours and they all participate/contribute.
I guess the problem is the irresponsible people getting them, and I'm not sure how that can be solved but also the timing. If sales of fireworks were restricted to only 1 week or less, this may mean less problems for people with animals that dislike them.
I do have a couple of friends posting all over social media how they should be banned and only public displays arranged.... but as they have also accepted the invitations to our party, they're not that bothered!

Crede · 03/11/2019 14:54

Yanbu. Just no need to have displays at home, and very selfish when yor're surrounded by other houses.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 03/11/2019 14:55

I agree. I grew up in NI where they were banned from public sale for a long time, and when they were legalised it was fucking horrendous. I couldn't go out as a teen without getting fireworks thrown at me in Oct.

There is no reason for explosives to be on sale to the general public. Large scale displays run by pros are fully sufficient.

MintyMabel · 03/11/2019 14:57

I saw my near neighbour complaining about how the poor dogs are upset for the few weeks of firework season.

This is a dog who is outside every hour, from 7am to midnight and runs around the garden barking for the 15 minutes it is out, every day of the year. His other dogs often join in. It wakes me up whenever it is out, every day of the week. This has happened for over six years.

I'm afraid I have little sympathy about how people are annoying his dogs.

recrudescence · 03/11/2019 14:59

I'm afraid I have little sympathy about how people are annoying his dogs.

What about sympathy for the dogs?

MintyMabel · 03/11/2019 15:02

Will also point out, organised displays near us are not accessible. We've never been able to take DD to a display. One of our NDN has two autistic children who love fireworks but can't cope with people in crowds.

So, to say people don't "need" to have them in their garden is wrong.

MintyMabel · 03/11/2019 15:03

What about sympathy for the dogs?

Nope. None.

RunsForGummyBears · 03/11/2019 15:03

YANBU

It's not difficult to police, they wouldn't be sold at the local grocery in the first place.

firstimemamma · 03/11/2019 15:03

Couldn't agree more op. Lots of dogs, other pets, small children, babies, vulnerable adults (I could continue with the list!) would all be much happier.

Greatnorthwoods · 03/11/2019 15:05

I don't think the masses should be penalised for irresponsible minority.

Agree, besides fireworks are better than the pipe bombs my neighbor makes and sets off

ForeverFaff · 03/11/2019 15:06

Do you know, it actually never occurred to me that farm and wild animals would suffer too 😰. Just shows how much of a bubble we can all exist in.

MarshallPNutt · 03/11/2019 15:08

Yep. I think it was last year a horse ran itself to death with the panic.

That's before we get into people, such as those with war induced PTSD who find this time of year very difficult.

recrudescence · 03/11/2019 15:10

Nope. None.

As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

Expressedways · 03/11/2019 15:10

Anything more than a sparkler is illegal where I live and I can’t say that I miss them.

Limiting it to organised displays doesn’t stop them scaring pets etc. though. We’re not close enough to hear it but there’s a weekly display here during summer.

Pilipilihoho · 03/11/2019 15:11

We've farmed for more than 40 years but they've never been an issue for any of our animals - not even dogs/cats/horses.

I'm not big on banning things, but if I was, I would start with the bloody lanterns people like to release - these are considerably more of a menace to wildlife, farm animals and land than fireworks a few nights a year.

CallMeRachel · 03/11/2019 15:12

Yanbu. I'm sick of this.

Selfish, thoughtless people everywhere.

The emergency services are beyond stretched and for that reason alone they need to be banned from public sale.

No point moaning, DO SOMETHING

Wheat2Harvest · 03/11/2019 15:14

I disagree completely. In the last few years there have been ongoing hate campaigns conducted against people who take part in this traditional activity. Most people don't misuse fireworks.

We are looking forward to ours this year so all the moaners, including the moaning dog owners, can go and take a running jump.

MyKingdomForBrie · 03/11/2019 15:14

@Pilipilihoho I agree Chinese Lanterns are much much worse but they don't upset dogs or cats so few people care!

Baguetteaboutit · 03/11/2019 15:16

YABU.

I don't want to just strip away all those things that some people can be assholes about. I'd give it about a week after banning fireworks before mnetters will be after halloweeners, kids playing in the street, BBQs, house parties and anything else that might interfere with their monastic silence.
